Small Victories has for a few years been my favourite cafe in a lovely, leafy corner of North Carlton. This is my first visit since they've changed ownership. Staff are friendly if a bit aloof, my coffee order was taken but after I had sat down I had to get up and get my own water. My short macchiato was great .. very smooth, velvety, with a generous foamy head and an almondy flavour. Foodwise I ordered the Dukka fritters ($18), but after ten minutes I was informed that the kitchen couldn't make this order. So I decided to go with the Eggs Florentine ($15). I noted that on menu it said poached eggs on sourdough - but when it arrived it was actually on english muffins. Flavour was ok but the eggs were over cooked and the kale didn't feel like it belonged. Bit disappointing to be honest. The new owners do indeed have big boots to fill. Perhaps they should've rebranded, visiting now is like redoing your favourite holiday .. still pleasant but not quite the same. Music - laid back tunes bubble along in the background, easy to chat Newspapers - yes

My inner goth loves their black salt

This is a fantastic breakfast option - 2 eggs on lovely toast with a million different delicious sides to add, or choose one of their recommended combos. I especially like the wilted spinach with herbs, and the potato croquettes with leak & cheddar were also nice. Prices are standard for Melbourne brekkie. Coffee is great. And staff is very nice. They have sidewalk tables and a surprisingly large indoor area, too.

This part of Rathdowne street seems to have a few decent cafes congregated around it, and while I was down here one Saturday afternoon looking for a particular secondhand bookshop I spied this place. Okay, I have to admit that I already knew that it was there, but I didn't know anything about it other than it was a cafe. Well, as it turns out it is pretty popular because when I arrived the place was packed. However, being the type of person who will press on regardless I decided to go and order a coffee. Well, I did find a spot to sit, and the coffee was actually really good, however the unfortunate thing is that this place isn't exactly quiet. However, there is a park across the road, which you can take you coffee if you really want some quiet.

Fantastic food, great service!! They made room for us so our table wasn't so crowded and we're just super helpful! Came Highly recommended and didn't disappoint!

Small victories is another local fav when we feel like avoiding Brunswick/Smith Street scene. An inventive menu with consistent coffee and on to it but not intense service. My favourites on the menu are the baked eggs with the lardo soldier and eggs any way with the scrummy sides like pork & fennel sausages, leek & cheddar croquettes and a variety house made cured meats. I haven't been here for lunch but the brunch rocks.

    Sitting inside Saturday brunch crowd!

It has a stack of pancakes with Nutella, banana, and pork belly bacon in between each cake. It's topped with a fried egg and has syrup and Parmesan cheese on the side. Such a weird idea but I really loved it! I'm a huge sweet and savory combo fan so bear in mind if you don't like sweet and salty together this isn't the dish for you. The Thai iced tea was also FABULOUS. Great service and free wifi. Absolutely a top notch spot.

Hidden from the plain sight, this cafe is Located in a less commonly travelled path, in an alleyway that just a few blocks from Victoria Market. A bit tricky to find, but the experience, however, was certainly worth the effort to get here. I promise :) Upon walking in, I was instantly in love with the interior - a spacious dining area decorated with vibrant colors of blue, yellow and green; it's fun and calming... the type of cafe where I don't mind spending my whole day here :D. Humble Rays most iconic menu is the French Toast Forever (AUD$19). It's a beautifully plated thick French toast stuffed with vanilla bean cream cheese. Topped generously with boysenberry ice cream, nuts and seasonal fruits and garnished with eye-popping fairy floss - It was nothing less than scrumptious! Portion wise, it was ginormous and easily last me through my next meal. For my drink, I ordered their green tea latte; it was gentle tasting and smooth. Delicious! Short to say, Humble Rays does not disappoint in any way. From the gorgeous food to inspiring atmosphere. The price is as what you'd expect to pay at a fine cafe in Melbourne... heavy on the pocket! But if you're looking for a gratifying cafe experience with Instagram worthy food (that also taste beyond its appearance), Humble Rays surely delivers.

It's fluffy, creamy, and just a little sweet. It's mixed in with their house blend which is one of the best I've had. Their coffee is on point! The cafe itself is a sleek and modern affair with hardwood timber countertops and a neat and tidy decor. The staff are friendly and with an open window bench top and street-side sitting, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the sunshine during the warmer months. Annoying Brother loses some points due to their menu. I'm not the kind of vegan that demands that cafes cater 100% to my needs, but the menu here completely lacks diversity. I can only see one vegetarian option, and there is nothing that could be made vegan. Considering the number of great breakfast places that cater to all diets in the area, it is a little disappointing. If I'm looking for a caffine hit while I'm in the area though, I will definitely find myself sitting by the street, enjoying the rays.

The magical barista will take your order, give you change and make your coffee ALL AT THE SAME TIME and my GOD it is a good coffee. Highly recommended if you're in the area and in desperate need of a caffeine hit.

Where Sugardough stands up is through the consistency and crunch of their breads. They don't over produce, so you won't be getting left over stock at the end of the day. This can mean that they won't have exactly the variety you're after, but you know it's fresh and that's of far more importance. They also do great (and consistently so) coffee, cakes, pizza slices and have some of the best pies in Melbourne.
