If you're a fan of Italian food a visit to Tuscany will just open your eyes to amazing possibilities. While there are restaurants that abound this region it's always a pleasure of mine to find those hidden gems that only the locals know about. Case and point this humble establishment Farid Kebab in Prato. My friend Francesco mentioned how good this place was so we had to give it a try. Now I've had my fare shares of halal food here in the states and other places but this would be my first in Italy. This hole-in-the-wall, which in this case is truly in the literal sense since the store is the size of a closet, serves up some delicious Mediterranean food. The meat sizzles from the gyro machine and for a couple of euros you can have a choice of a combo platter or an all meat platter that has a generous portion of food. And by generous I truly mean a crap load! No complaints here. We ordered the combo platter and the meat platter. For less than 15 euros for both dishes the deal was a bargain. The meat platter consisted of a sizable helping of meat shaved from the turning machine of meaty-ness, with mayonnaise, ketchup, tzatziki sauce, and hot sauce in between the two layers. You read that right people they pile on the meat, add the amazing combo of sauces, and then add another layer of meat!!! They do the same thing with the combo platter but also add fresh vegetables, French fries, onions, etc. and then top with more meat then drizzled with the heavenly sauces. I keep drooling every time I think back on that fateful night. I think I need to contact those guys running the place and see if I can borrow their recipe. I bet you this place would make bank here in the states. So as I said in the beginning you can never have a bad meal in Italy. And based on this humble place ain't no one changing my viewpoint anytime soon.

We had the asparagus salad (which was raw thinly sliced asparagus, tossed in a salad); two pasta dishes - the sage, spinach, and ricotta ravioli (3 empanada-sized raviolis), Florentine ragu; and shared a mid-price-point chianti. I enjoyed the experience and would go again, though my partner felt that the pasta was 'good but not memorable'.

Francesco, our waiter, was very nice. This is an unpretentious restaurant. There were three dining rooms. The small room we were in was furnished simply, with a mix of tourists and Italian speakers. There was a lot of moderately priced wine available. It's almost never worth spending the money on expensive wine in Florence. We were started off with some typical Tuscan bread. Two of us ordered excellent butterflied shrimp with white beans as appetizers. My buddy and I split an order of perfectly prepared tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms. My wife had the same pasta as her entree. My friend's wife had tagliatelle with a beef ragu. My buddy and I shared a majestic order of steak Florentine. It was cooked and seasoned just right. It was accompanied by excellent roasted potatoes and white beans. The price was a bargain at €100 for two. We were too full for dessert. This nice place will always be at the top of my to do list in Florence.

By the…read moretime we found parking, wandered around for a bit, we were a bit worn out and went to check in at our b&b just outside of the city centre. After checking-in we did not want to find our way back to Firenze so we ate downstairs at the flourescently lit tiny shop where they scraped chicken off the doner. There is definitely no arguments here about pricing 3.50 euro if eaten in sandwich form, and 4 eur in a wrap form. I was gonna share one with my boyfriend, but after he took one bite, he very very reluctantly let me take one, and told me to order my own. A little display fridge that has drinks including beer, it made for a satifying meal They don't have fries except for the 2-3 they thrown in the wrap/sandwich. They also have curry, and chicken, but they didn't look very fresh or appetizing. We wanted to come and eat again before we left, but they don't do breakfast and since we were in a hurry, we were relegated to AutoGrill on the highway stop stations. Had they opened for breakfast, I would have totally eaten that instead :)

I highly suggest making a reservation. Luckily, we were there in April so it wasn't too busy. They open for dinner at 7pm, so we got in line a little after 7:30pm. I think we were seated in about 30 minutes. We got the cheese wheel pasta (Flambé tagliatelle with fresh truffle in Grana Padano cheese wheel) that everyone is talking about. It's amazing! Definitely worth stopping by. The meal came with an aperitif. I got the Alcohol free gin tonic with aromatic essences, wild fruits basil and lemon--it was great! Also came with two types of bread and a limoncello after dinner.

They brought us all in as a group (checking reso names) and sat us at individually tables. Then the "show" began with welcome prosecco, wine orders, etc. We got the squid and pork screwers as a starter and thought the flavors were just okay. The complimentary cheese bread ball and regular bread was super tasty. For mains, we got the truffle pasta (with the famous cheese wheel) which was fun to watch. The pasta itself was very solid, but not best ever. Also got the beef/boar pasta and it was better than the truffle pasta in my opinion and cheaper. The deconstructed tiramisu was yummy. Overall a good dinner with good service and pretty good food! An easy spot to recommend to others!
