Our favorite mezze was the octopus salad appetizer which was one of the many to choose from. Entrees were excellent: grilled sea bass x2, grilled sea bream x2, rack of lamb, and stuffed roasted whole eggplant. Both red and white wines were enjoyed too. We were too full for dessert so maybe next time we're in Amsterdam, we'll try it. Highly recommend Levant!

This restaurant is super cute and has a very nice second level that has tables indoor. On the lower level they have a patio which is right next to the canal and it has a beautiful set up. The service was amazing. Our waiters were very patient with questions, were caring and asked where we were from, and offered to take a family picture of us which we appreciated. From the start they bring a big platter of all the mezze available to your table and you get to pick which ones you want to have (prices are listed on the menu), they also bring a big basket of delicious Turkish bread which reminded me of a focaccia a little bit except a lot heartier and without the flavor of olive oil. We tried the hummus which was creamy and had a predominant flavor of cumin, the octopus which was very refreshing and flavorful, the tzatziki which was thick, refreshing and very creamy with a powerful garlic flavor, and the eggplant with tahini which was cooked to perfection, and just melted in your mouth. We shared a bottle of white wine which was really good and dry. For food we ordered: Sea bass fillet: two generously sized pieces of sea bass that were perfectly grilled and super flaky. They felt very healthy and fresh. Came with some salad on the side. Duck breast: super tender duck with a really nice flavor. The meat was soft, not chewy, and it felt pretty lean. Came with some rice pilaf that was also very well cooked and tasted really nicely. The combination of the duck, the fruit, the sauce and the rice was fantastic. Also generous portion. Sea bass with Turkish bouillabaisse: this dish was amazing!! The sea bass was flaky, and melted in your mouth. The sauce that it came with was also really flavorful and had some dill on top as well. Really enjoyed the other fruits de mer which came with the dish (shrimp, squid). Super decadent and filling! I used some of my leftover Turkish bread to soak up the sauce. Grilled chicken thigh: did not try it but my parents loved this dish! They said the chicken was very tender and that the sides were really good too (some greens, potatoes, and labneh). Overall really loved this place! I thought the service was splendid, the ambiance in the outside patio is unbeatable since you get your own private area along the canal, and the food was spectacular. 11/10 would recommend to anyone who is around the area and wants a place for a nice dinner!

It's casual but chic inside, with an upstairs and a downstairs, and a nice bar with some sophisticated cocktails. Spent a good hour and a half there, between drinks, eating, and just chilling. The food is Fantastic! A fresh and healthy take on middle eastern food, with excellent pitas (an important mark of quality in middle eastern restaurants), and great vegetarian dishes. We had the shashuka with grilled eggplant, hummus, and salad, with a vanilla margarita (Yum! Whodathunk?!) , and finished with a fresh mint tea. Touted primarily as an Indonesian Restaurant, it also qualifies itself as an Indian eatery, as well as presenting the cuisine of Suriname - and doing it all under the umbrella of being Halal (which may also mean "Pradesh"). Now that's a lot of cuisines, all from different corners of the globe. But then I recalled my week shooting a movie in Belize a decade ago, and there was the connection. In Belize there seems to be an unwritten rule (or tradition) that was proudly announced by our liaison from the film office. And that was that ALL OF THE GROCERY STORES (the country only had small mom & pop places) in Belize City were owned and run by Indians from India; and the most popular food, being Chinese steam table take-out joints like we have in America (fried rice, spring rolls, noodles, sweet & sour chicken/shrimp, spicy saucy stir fried meat & vegies, etc...), and these places were always packed with lines around the corner. They were also ALL OWNED AND RUN by Vietnamese extended families. And the Vietnamese community mixed very well with the Indian families, having similarly imported ingredients from afar, as well as exotic flavors, similar spices, rice based cuisines, and they both cooked curries. Now for Suriname and Indonesia and how those two food cultures fit into the menu profile at Restaurant Riaz. I have eaten a lot of Indonesian food in my day, and its flavor pallet is very similar to India, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, all using coconut milk, peanuts, chili-peppers, potatoes, green peppers, fish-sauce, vegies, and similar meats and seafoods, plus blends of sweet and salty and spicy and sour; and all of them use rice. Now the thread that sews Suriname to these others is that it was also a Dutch Colony, as were Indonesia and parts of India (like Sri Lanka [Ceylon at the time]). So the Dutch created huge incentives for the Indians in their empire to relocate to the sparsely populated Suriname; and these Indians brought their food with them. So when I ate lunch in New York City at a Surinamese place in The Bronx, I was surprised to see the menu filled with Curries, Chutney, Samosas, Fried Pakoras, and everything was served with rice and Indian Roti, (an oily flour tortilla-like bread), often accompanied by a small bowl of rich brown Curry-Gravy to dip into. The food from Suriname was Literally INDIAN FOOD. Thus the culinary story of Restaurant Riaz and its diverse menu started to make a lot of sense. The Indonesian food complimented the Surinamese meals; and the Indian dishes blended seamlessly with the other cuisines. And the Roti and Curry-Gravies went perfectly with everything. Restaurant Riaz is a big success story in my book. I can't wait to come here again - and this time I am going to bring a whole bunch of friends.

Coming from the southern US, to me fried means battered and deep fried. So when it came without a batter I thought "huh" but it was the absolute best eggplant I have had in my life. And I love eggplant. Then meatballs, lamb skewers and stuffed mushrooms. They serve toasted pita to go with the hummus which is awesome as well. This restaurant will be on our go-to/don't miss list when we visit Amsterdam. And the owners are just lovely people. I recommend highly!!

I am a little bit restricted by my vegetarian diet which is what ultimately directed us to Bolenius as they have a plant-based option. If you're visiting Amsterdam as a tourist, it's a bit of a trek from the city center but pretty quick and easy to get there by the metro, which was our mode of transportation. Our reservation was at 7pm but it was such an incredible experience, we literally did not leave the place until, I want to say like 10:30pm. The interior decor is unique and vibes with the brand pretty well. The service was excellent from start to finish. It is definitely a team effort as we interacted with many different servers who were all kind, wonderful, and welcoming. Everything was thoroughly explained to us. I went the vegetarian tasting menu route and GF did the standard tasting menu. We also accepted most of the additional add ons like wine pairing, their recommended beet dish, and cheese selection at the end of the meal. I was grateful to see a variety of ingredients used for the vegetarian menu instead of just the standard mushrooms 100 times over and over again that is common at other establishments. They also employed many different textures and innovative presentations to the dishes including the foam, which I'm pretty sure is required for a restaurant to get a star, but also things like a shaved and latticed ASPARAGUS dish. The dishes were, as you would probably expect, like works of art. Like I said above, I have somewhat of a history dining at Michelin starred restaurants but I think it's safe to say that this was the best experience I have ever had and cannot recommend it enough.

Any attempt at a genuine apology would have prevented me from writing this review. There wasn't an offer of a beverage, or any discount to the meal. They could have chosen not to charge us for the two bottles of water. There was an optional course ordered which I attempted to cancel (naturally, I lost my appetite after seeing a live insect crawling in the second course), which they informed me that they could not cancel without charging me. They could have offered the extra course for free. There was the option to add a spoon of caviar to another dish for extra charge. I explicitly asked whether that could be on the house, you know, given the aforementioned insect on a previous course. Not only was this denied, the server did not even bother to acknowledge the comment. Lastly, when the check arrived, I informed them that there was zero attempt made to rectify the mistake of the insect. All we got was an apology that the staff was not able to pick up on the signals of our dissatisfaction- as if the bug, the request to cancel the optional dish free of charge, the willful ignorance over the caviar, and my complaint after getting the bill were not enough. Even without the insect incident, the food was phenomenally subpar for this city. My recommendation would be to never visit this restaurant. The food is terrible, the conditions are unsanitary, and the service is appalling.
