Keg and Brew, located in Surrey Hills is a pub that has a variety of beers on tap as well as other alcoholic beverages (wine, ciders, etc.). My partner had been wanting to check out a pub during our time in Sydney and I found Keg and Brew close to our hotel. How to order drinks and food can get quite confusing if you are a foreigner. The first floor of the pub is a bar and the second floor is where you pick up your food you order from the bar. Everything is completely self serviced. Unclear of the process my husband and I sat down at one of the tables on the first floor. We then realized that people were ordering from the bar and we asked staff regarding how the process worked. They told us to order with them where we would pick up our food on the 2nd floor. After ordering, we actually decided to relocate to the 2nd floor without realizing we needed to pick up our drinks from the first floor bar where we ordered them. After a bit of confusion, we were able to get our food and drinks. I opted for the steak special (added some mashed potatoes on the side) and a red wine. My husband opted for the chicken parmesan and a beer. After a bit of confusion at first, the food was actually quite delicious. We enjoyed our items as we enjoyed our beer and wine after a long day. Overall, a confusing start to the night but it ended up where both of us left satisfied. read more

Thank god for some real beer! It's been almost 3 weeks that I have been forced to drink watery beer since I have been in New Zealand and Australia. I thought I was going to die from water intoxication....Not only do they serve great beer, but it's also the cheapest I have had so far (when you consider ABV). Tried the triple IPA and the smoked saison. Triple IPA was good body but not very hop forward when considering the IPAs of the U.S. west coast that I am used to. The smoked saison was incredible! Salty and smoky yet light and tangy from the yeasty wheaty saison profile. When you see "middy" it means it will be served in a tulip glass (10 oz) instead of a pint. Missed out on food as the kitchen was closed, but it looks like there was some good specials. Also happy hour 5-7 PM Mon-Sat 4$ drinks sign was posted. The amount of beer at this little English-y pub on Foveaux Street is monumental. Keg & Brew is the pub equivalent of a skinny pale guy winning the Mr Olympia Contest, it is punching so far above it's weight it deserves a certificate of commendation from someone important with lots of money and titles and a top government job. It's fun to just pick beers at random, we did this and each was better than the last, there was a 4 Pines Hefweizer (yeah, not sure about that spelling) that was kinda fruity with lashings of banana flavour which sounds weird but was an absolute win, beer of the night without a shadow of a doubt. And the food. Don't ignore the food. Or do and go home with a vague feeling that you missed out on something FOMO-worthy. Go hard at the Chilli Cheese Fries. Big, crunchy, fluffy steak fries topped with glorious melted cheese and chilli con carne and chilli flakes and a few other things besides. Goes so well with beer they should actually marry. I stumbled upon the Keg and Brew by accident one night waiting for my mate near Central Station. I went for a walk as she said she'd be another 30-45 mins, and I found it! I walked inside and was immediately greeted warmly by the bar staff, so a grabbed a wine list and ordered a bottle (a lovely greeting means I buy a bottle Ha-Ha). My mate ended up meeting me at the K&B and we stayed there all night! About halfway through the night we finally looked up and saw all the massive HEADS hanging off the walls, and I can't believe I didn't notice them for the hours I'd already been there! One of the animals has a bow in his hair, and I fondly names him David 'Bowie' (see what I did there... Ha-Ha) Highly recommend - the food is fantastic, classic pub food with some menu items having a great twist to the traditional classics, and the wine list is awesome! read more

Well, it was my last night in Sydney, and it was a little early for my to head back to my hotel so I decided to come and check this place out. Okay, this wasn't the first time that I have visited this pub, but I had walked past it a few days previously and decided that it would probably be nice to step in here again and have a beer and a bit of a look around. Well, the beers available were pretty cool - in fact they even had one called the 'Mad Abbott'. It's not the biggest place in the world but who wants to be a size-ist when they have so many different beers? Lots and lots of beers. mmmmmm. Naturally, they ran out of the one that i wanted but I was offered a very great alternative that I happily enjoyed. The chips are a bit saltier than I would like but they more than make up for it by having this incredible ice cream waffle thing. read more

My friend and I passed by this bar on our way back to the hostel. We needed to grab a quick bite to eat before we headed out to the bars for the night, and we saw an advertisement for a rump steak with chips and salad for less than $10. Since we weren't terribly hungry at the time, we decided to just split one portion. As an American who's used to apparently a poor quality of meat (as well as other foods for that matter), this rump steak was delicious. The gravy had a great amount of flavor and the meat was cooked really well. The chips were nice and crispy and the salad wasn't bad either. Overall, a fantastic meal for relatively little money. The bar itself had a nice ambiance. It was buzzing, but not too loud that you can't hear other people. And though we didn't actually try any of their beers, we saw that they'd won awards for their brewing, so I'm sure it's worth a try! read more

Pretty great beer list, 30 taps to cater for all palates. The food is slightly above average for pub food. Take advantage of the daily specials, $9.90 burger and chips on a Monday is a good deal. That being said, I do miss the the old KB Hotel, which was a simple place, but life goes on. Ahhh it makes me sad to write this review since I've been looking SO forward to drinking and eating at this place for a looooong time. So, they have $4 beers, ciders and house drinks every day from 5-7. When we went there, they were out of cider. Well, beggars can't be choosers, so we went with the $4 schooners of what was on offer (eventually moving to $12 jugs.) So far, winning. The place was hot, rowdy, and noisy, but, $4 beers, plus comfy booths, one of which we managed to snag. Next, the food. Here's the breakdown: - 1 kg "buffalo" wings with blue cheese. Came out in a big pail. Pros - a massive portion. Cons - the wings were soggy AF, like they'd barely been cooked, with "buffalo" sauce that was essentially bland chilli paste. The blue cheese sauce was good but came in a tiny tub half filled. It was the weeniest, saddest amount for the 15+ wings they dished up. We ran out after 3 wings, plus I had to ask the kitchen for two plates. - The chicken burger. Was meant to be served with avocado salsa, tomato salsa, and chipotle mayo. Could have fooled me, since aside from a hint of chipotle, the burger was dry, dry, dry. - Chicken and mushroom pie. It came out looking great - until I cut into it. The "creamy" interior promised on the menu was nowhere to be found. The pie was way overcooked - even the pastry was brittle and dry. Nearly inedible, but I was a fair few schooners in and with a bunch of other people so I just ate it. - Chips - were good. They are skin on and a good size portion, if a bit cold when they got to me. All in all - a decent night out, but the food was really subpar and let the experience down. Sad face. Next time I'll go for happy hour, then head over to the Bat and Ball for dinner. read more

I work just near the Keg & Brew so came down here for lunch. My friend and I both ordered the "Southern Chicken Burger" for $16 which is described as: Southern-spiced fried chicken, cheese, chipotle mayo, John's favourite avocado salsa, lettuce, tomato salsa and corn chips on a seeded soft-milk bun. It also came with chips. The burger wasn't anything to write home to. It was good, tasty, but not the best burger I've had. The chips were a let down as well, didn't seem fresh and crunchy. The burger was filling and I liked the chipotle mayo. Keg & Brew is good for happy hour with $4 drinks from 5-7pm. I would come back and try something else on the menu, or even take advantage of their specials. They have different specials each week so best check them out! read more

I have been at Keg & Brew a couple of times with my boyfriend and some friends. The location is pretty good and the beer is pretty good. Also, they have a pretty cool menu. I had the lasagna rolls which were very tasty, and I tried also the chicken schnitzel with the mushroom cream: simply amazing! and it comes with chips of course! They also have remarkable wine and whisky lists.. not to be underestimated! So, finally, highly recommended! read more

This place is so bad we didn't even really get in the door. We found this place and were eager for a cold beer and some lunch after a morning of walking and touring. Arrived maybe 4 minutes before the midday happy hour special. But we thought, "Surry Hills is a pretty cool place, I'm sure this place wouldn't be the kind to turn away business for being 4 minutes early". We asked for the special beer, but the tap was firing blanks. it was empty. So I asked if we could get another beer but for the happy hour price, because you know, "get your taps in order". but the customer serviceman had no chill and basically said "sorry cannot do that". I said surely you can just serve us another beer at the happy hour price, but he wouldn't budge. We just said cheers and left to find another place doing lunch deals. We will never know how good or bad this place really is, but I think it's safe to say this place is not relaxed by any means. read more

A first stop on a pub crawl to Cricket, I was struck by how much better the prices here were than other places in Sydney. A lot of surrounding neighborhoods have a lot of boutique bars with loud music and $10 (AUD) Pints. If you want a decent place to chill and talk with mates, this is a better option in my opinion.
