I saw The Crucible here a few years back and found it rather clinically efficient, clean, large,…read moresymmetrical and sterile. It does the job without providing any supplementary atmosphere. The ushers are certainly efficient (after we managed to find ourselves in the wrong seats) and with the right production it really makes no difference that the environment doesn't add any colour and fizz to the experience. I don't know who does the lighting but I did notice that they did a great job, not that I have enough technical understanding to analyse the matter. I did find the drinks rather expensive (which I suppose is to be expected in a place this size with overheads to keep up to).

Stylish historic concert hall in downtown Bradford. Sonics are good, too…read more Bradford in West Yorkshire is not necessarily the town that comes up first when you think about historic buildings and monuments in the UK. There are a few stunning examples, like the town hall - and of course, St. George's Hall, the premier concert venue in the city. It is a lovely 19th century building outside and inside, very well preserved. The auditorium especially is wonderfully ornate and pleasant. Unlike German cities its size, Bradford does not have its own, standing professional symphony orchestra, so they depend on guests. A regular visitor to St.George's Hall is the Manchester-based Hallé Orchestra, one of the oldest professional classical ensembles in the country. I visited St. George's Hall for a Hallé concert in September of 2014. The acoustics are very good. Maybe not as transparent and dynamic as those of Nottingham's modern Royal Concert Hall, certainly not comparable to the magnificent The Bridgewater Hall. But very good indeed if an orchestra is in town. Amenities are on the traditional side: Toilets are small and few, the bar certainly doesn't impress compared to the above-mentioned venues. The decor is cozy, rather 1960-ish. Everything feels a little cramped until you get into the auditorium. Definitely worth a visit in a city with few outstanding features.

The bar area…read morewas filling up pretty quick but there was enough time to get a drink and take a seat in the bar. The bar had not only a very poor selection of drinks but the staff had very poor knowledge of what was actually stocked on the bar. They were also happy to serve whoever pushed to the front which was unfair on everyone else who was waiting patiently. Breaking free from the nightmare that was the bar area we went to take a seat in the theatre. It looked great and seeing the stage made me even more excited of what was to come. We found our seats and went to sit down. Painful! I am unsure whether the seats were actually designed for children, they were so small! It wasn't the seat space it was the leg space you had to literally wedge yourself down. I have no idea how people with long legs sat in these seats as I am not exactly the tallest person ever and found it quite hard. The most comfortable position was to sit with your legs apart as it gave you a little more room however it isn't exactly the most lady like of positions. We were seated at the end of a row and had to get up to let people in and out about 800 times which was fine but each time we sat back down it really hurt your legs. Great show just shame on the seats, they are in no way made for adults.

Beautiful, well-preserved historic concert hall. Acoustics are better than ok, too…read more Went there for a concert by the visiting Manchester Hallé Orchestra in September 2014. The decor in this Victorian age concert hall is stylish indeed, from the peculiar circular corridor around the back to the stunning, plush auditorium. When you're entering it truly is like a step back in time. The venue offers classical as well as pop concerts and many other kinds of performances and shows (A town the size of Harrogate does not have its own professional orchestra - of course). The acoustics are not as colorful as at, say, the Manchester Bridgewater Hall or the Nottingham Royal Concert Hall, but they are still very good, with a nice presence. Seats in the auditorium are comfortable, even cozy. Amenities include a bar, located along said circular corridor.
It would be so easy to give this beautiful venue a 5 star ***** review. It's breath-taking inside,…read morejust stunning. The recent restoration that was finished in 2008 has made it one of the most outstanding looking theatres in the north of England. It has one of the oddest features in the form of a circular corridor around the outside of the foyer area - this must have been truly spectacular with all the sides open in good weather. The ceiling of the auditorium is quite amazing. The whole place is a classic old-fashioned theatre. A few things let it down. Brownie points for the large number of ladies toilets which meant that when I was there recently my other half didn't spend the whole interval queuing to use them. On the other hand I actually did spend most of the interval queuing as, for reason, it was decided to make the number of toilets in the gents minimal. This meant a good 60 or 70 caught-short blokes standing around the stair area in confused fashion. It's almost like the place has taken revenge on men who have hardly had to queue to use the loo! In addition the place has a heavy handed approach to anyone trying to take photos. While this might make sense for many theatrical productions when a rock band play there - and quite a few do - it's just weird. People tend to take photos at music shows these days, but try it here and you'll get into trouble There is a team of stealthy black-suited ladies who's sole occupation it seems is to police the venue and creep up on anyone who dares to take out a camera. I sat almost at the back with no one behind me and as soon as I took a picture I hand grabbed my shoulder and a lady stage whispered into my ear: 'no photography'. We then watched in amusement as this team of ladies crept about, shoulders hunched, trying to find more culprits. They didn't bother with people in the middle of rows but anyone sitting in an aisle seat was considered fair game. We saw about 20 people get collared. It became silly. I sneakily took a few shots but I suspect I'd have been ejected if I'd been caught a second time. For such an old-style place to be so strict is a bit off putting. I'm all for stopping vast numbers of video cameras and the like but an occasional snap when bright flashing lights are all around is mad.

The obvious place of notoriety is always…read morethe West Yorkshire Playhouse and as a result of this I feel that the choice of shows there are sometimes a little more mainstream. The Carriageworks has always had a very interesting itinerary which seems to attempt to cater to all audiences, and not just go for the big bucks, with both wider and lesser known companies putting on performances here. There is a large space as well as a more intimate space, there bar area - although rather cosy - is nicely laid out, and the performances are certainly more affordable than their aforementioned competitor. All of this points towards a positive vibe. There is always something going on here, and not just theatre, so it is certainly worth taking a look at what they have coming up. Since there are plenty of places to eat and drink, literally next door, The Carriageworks can set you up for a wonderfully cultured evening of food, drinks and a show. Fabulous!

Now, I'm…read morenot a theatre aficionado - I couldn't vouch for the space on a professional level, but by all appearances it seems like a decent space. The theatre I was in seemed to be of a medium capacity, tiered seating, and plenty of room for performance. Purchasing tickets seems to be simple, and the waiting area is spacious. You can purchase hot or cold drinks, but not take them into the space. It appears that the programme of shows range from student's pieces, to professional touring companies, and so the variety of style means there's something that most would enjoy. You're a few minutes from the Union so there's lots of opportunity for a pint afterwards, although that will mean a student style environment -perhaps not for everyone. That being said, drinks are incredibly cheap. Needless to say, my being a fan of the space is likely to do with the quality of the performance I saw here last night, but the seats are comfy and by all accounts it seems to be a good spot to see a show.

These seats are so steep that my companion genuinely had a mild attack of vertigo - this should have been mentioned at the time of booking as I would not have bought the tickets had I know about the nature of the seats. The view and acoustics were terrible here. You may say I simply bought too late but a few weeks later, when a friend asked if any seats were left, I looked again to see and, to my disappointment, found that seats in the stalls were now available. I hadn't been given any option to buy these a few months earlier so I wasn't happy. Be careful where you park too - the car park the Alhambra recommended I use had just two payment machines and a crowd of around 300 people queued for about 20 minutes after the show to pay for our car park. All in a all a very negative experience and one I won't repeat.
