The only negative for the evening was how cold it was. Every hole has multiple hills and each seem to slope into the fake grass edges making it very annoying to take your shot as the ball constantly rolls into the edge. Very poorly designed course. At $40 for two adults and a child it's certainly not great value. My child gave up about half way around and we were also frustrated and disappointed for having paid so much money for the experience.

Greens are mostly fairly small with little borrow and the fairways are narrow and tree-lined. Hitting off can be daunting for beginners as the waiting area is right behind the tee and there is often a crowd waiting and watching. Beware of balls from other fairways as the fairways are narrow. Four holes on the front nine go up and down hills but the back nine is just undulating. The back nine has nicer shots into the green as some of the hole were redesigned a few years back. The last hole is a useful par-5 that sweeps around a corner. Usually very busy and is popular with beginners so can be slow.

This popular bowling club also has a bar which is ridiculously cheap - I'm guessing this adds to lawn bowls' appeal - alongside not one but three bowling greens which ostensibly accommodate up to 144 people. Both competitive and casual players are welcome and there is a laid back atmosphere to the Middle Park Bowling Club which makes it a great place to while away the day with half of your focus trained on the green and the other on the bar.

At $10 a day for non-members and $50 for a years casual membership, this is honestly the cheapest and best entertainment money can buy. You can also hire out a few greens and bbq's for an event such as a birthday or Christmas party. And by hire I mean you pretty just have to assume them that you'll spend a bit at the bar. In light of this fact, my then boss decided to take us on a work social to the Richmond Bowling Club to see whether it had rightfully been popularized or whether it was just a passing fad. To my surprise lawn bowls has a lot going for it. We were given a lesson by (who I presume was) the 1969 bowls state champion, sporting a rather fetching Richmond tracksuit. He knew his stuff and he had those bowls swinging from left to right, right to left, in no time. There were plenty of beers too; and these were dramatically cheaper than you'd find in your local boozer. In short, crown green bowling is here to stay and you should come get your fill before it's too late.
