She was very patient in letting me explain how I was hoping the color would be and then she went on to discuss her thoughts and how she could best address my problems. I moved to Bainbridge Island 2+ years ago and was still making trips back to my previous hometown to visit my hair stylist of 20+ years and couldn't imagine ever finding someone local to cut my hair... but I saw Kelli's name mentioned on the BI Facebook group, and then I read her Yelp reviews, and decided to visit her first for a consultation and soon after a cut. BEST decision!!!! Kelli is experienced. Kelli listens. If my old stylist reads this, please don't have hurt feelings... but I'm SO HAPPY with Kelli's haircuts. Kelli has a great reputation for doing color, and is extremely knowledgeable about hair care and chemistry. I'm in my late 50's with untreated gray hair, and some unpredictable natural curls, and Kelli knows exactly how to cut hair like mine. FELLOW CURLY GIRLS- I FOUND YOUR SALON!!! I have been to many salons in a lot of major cities over the years, and I was so happy to have found Kelli on BI. I have naturally curly hair and have had too many bad experiences to count. Lots of us seek out "curly hair specialists" (go Lorraine Massy and her Curly Girl Method!) and pay hundreds of dollars for a cut that is... well, not good to say the least. Kelli is BY FAR the best. No really, she is the best. I had to jump on here to give her my highest recommendation to ANYONE with natural curls. She'll dry cut it. YES, she will dry cut your curls which is again, hard to find. Plus, she did my color and JACKPOT! She is an expert colorist and this is another area where she shines. She is a lovely human and true artist. I have been "blessed" with hair that has some very unique undertones. I've been through many stylists in my pursuit of the perfect red hair dye, and every single time my hair decides it would rather be purple. However Kelli is the only one who has ever attempted to find a work around for my stubborn hair, and she got it perfect! I also know for a fact that if I ever got the silly idea to dye my hair some crazy damaging color (like going from red to platinum in one go) she would be honest with me about the realistic outcome and not just bleach my hair to kingdom come just because I had deluded myself into thinking it would look like all the photoshopped model instagram pictures. The reminder emails for my appointments also help me so much, I'm pretty forgetful so they are definitely a life saver. My haircut with Kelli was a disaster. I moved to BI four months ago and Kelli initially did a stellar job on my first highlight so I made a follow up appointment for another highlight and a haircut. The highlight was OK, not as great as the first one but the haircut was the worst I've ever had. I have been growing my hair and had a fabulous haircut (not done by Kelli) which was growing out beautifully. All I needed was a trim, really just "dusting" of the ends. Kelli and I discussed that she would follow the shape of the haircut I had. Not only did she not follow the graceful layers and tapering around the face, she full-on decided that she would just cut my hair BLUNT. No more lovely layers. Not only was it a blunt cut it was uneven and instead of the tapering around the face there were weird chunks cut out of the angle. Also I've never had a haircut where the ends felt ragged afterward. I immediately texted Kelli and she offered to fix the haircut. She admitted she remembered the moment she went off on a tangent and cut my hair differently without consulting me because she "thought I'd like it better." Her next availability was the following morning which I couldn't make so had to wait till the following week for her next opening. During that week I literally couldn't look in the mirror or style my hair - it was that bad and realized I couldn't imagine letting her take scissors to my hair again. I got a referral to another stylist (different salon) and went in for a consult. That stylist confirmed the haircut was uneven and not done well but said with minimal cutting into the length she could even it out, work toward fixing the taper in front and that it would be fully grown out again within a couple haircuts (a couple of haircuts!). I respectfully texted Kelli to say that after much consideration, I was not comfortable returning to her to correct the haircut and that I'd appreciate a refund for the haircut portion of my bill since I'd have to go somewhere else to fix it (total spent that day with Kelli was over $300.00). She did not refund the money for the haircut but said she would cancel my future appointments. I thought that was pretty shabby. I would say that if you go to Kelli you will be taking a big risk, she's inconsistent and does not listen to you. For a seasoned stylist to make rookie mistakes in a basic haircut is a red flag and for Kelli to arbitrarily decide to do something different than what was discussed is inexplicable. During the first appt with her, I thought she had a fun "quirky" personality, during my second appointment I felt there was something decidedly "off" about her. Hard to explain exactly but she was off with her timing while I was under the heat - and after having called me by my correct first name the whole time, she called me by a different clients name while setting up my next appointment. For the high prices she charges, I expected a more professional experience and a better quality of haircut and highlight. She also has this 'Olaplex' treatment that she says she gives you free the first time. The second time I went in she said she'd have to charge me for it without really asking me if I wanted it or telling me how much it was - like the assumption was I'd just be fine with it and truthfully I should have spoken up but I don't get my hair done but every three months so figured why not give myself a treat. She pushed the product at the end of the service and I bought it. Considering all that I've had to contend with afterward and the expense of a haircut at another salon, I'm literally sick about the dollar amount I spent that day. read more

Kelli Newman is a hair magician! I just experienced the best color and cut yesterday - at least since my last appointment 6 weeks ago and every 6 weeks over the past 1 1/2 years! I initially came to Kelli for "hair recovery" when I fell for the lure of the cheapest hair deal on the OP. I searched on line for the best hair colorist and found Kelli - so glad I did. She educated me on the steps needed to repair my hair and after only a couple of appointments, I could see great results. This is the healthiest my hair has been in decades. I appreciate that she is direct yet honest and kind, listens to my requests yet unafraid to make recommendations based on her extensive expertise and always allows enough time so that she is focused only on me and never rushes. I also enjoy the vibe in the salon as all of the stylists are also professional and personable - you can tell they really like each other and offer great service to all clients. This is also important to me as I have patroned a lot of flaky salons that have a bad vibe where you could cut the tension with a knife. She also has the best view of the marina from her chair! Having had two of the finest colorists in the Bay Area do my hair for the past 20+ years, I was totally spoiled and concerned I'd have to settle for something less on Bainbridge Island. I need not have worried. Kelli's skill with color is exceptional and styling skills easily rise to that level as well.
