Rake Lane Cemetary
(1 review)
I'm a cemetery lover. I can't help it. Despite the fact that I hate funerals, dying, death --all…read morethat crap--I still love burial grounds. I think it's the peace and quiet mixed with the park-like atmosphere provided by old, gnarly trees and wild flowers. I grew up in the country, so every chance I get to spend time in nature here, I grab. Rake Lane Cemetery is a really big, peaceful cemetery in Wallasey that makes a good place for long walks and meandering thoughts. I walk by here a lot and notice that even on bright sunny days there aren't that many people walking in there, though sometimes there are a few. Also, if you like to photograph grave stones as some people do, there are plenty of old ones here worth shooting. I know I sound morbid when I say this, but this is a very pretty cemetery.

We called Peter Coyne Funeral Services and Peter and his lovely wife Lorraine very gently guided us through this incredibly difficult time. McCallum & Tritton & Sons
It seems a little inappropiate, sinister even, to say "I am a fan" of a funeral directors, more so…read moreas ( fortunately) I've never actually experienced such a service. However McCallum and Tritton are very popular in the area. I know this because I live nearby and the main road traffic is continually interrupted by a festooned hearse or two. The cars a kept in beautiful condition and the staff always look very smart. I wonder that the staff are not all as odd as one particular member who is constantly sat or stood outside the directors; it's a little creepy, like he's sat waiting for someone to give up the ghost. His gaze troubles my grandfather who says he feels he's being sized up in advance!! The building is well looked after and actually looks rather attractive now that a row of hanging baskets decks Holden Road East.
Flaybrick Hill Cemetery
Opened in 1864, Flaybrick Hill Cemetery was originally set within a rural location, designed as the…read morelast resting place for the people of Birkenhead, but now been encircled by gradual suburban development. Although regrettably much vandalised by local dimwits in recent years (of which there are many), traces of its essential splendour still remain, so that it can readily be likened as a sort of 'Highgate Cemetery' of the north - being rich in Gothic ornament, and containing the graves of many notables of the day. Much has gone however. The beautiful church is now a complete ruin, and the charming lodge at the main gate looks as if the local council has given up on its maintenance altogether. This is a shame, as in the hands of local administrators with more imagination and vision, the cemetery could actually operate as a tourist attraction - indeed plans have been underway for some time to open a National Bat Centre here. In its heyday, and you need only go back 30 or so years before the rot really set in, the cemetery was an extremely pleasant place to stroll around - having a number of walks arranged to give maximum value to the views. You can still see the memorials to Sir William Jackson (founder of Birkenhead Park - the first municipal park in the world); the delightful headstone of George Lance, the Victorian still-life painter, and that of Lock Ah Tam - the tragic murderer of his family during the 1920s, while many others may be identified just by taking a look at the website. Use as a base for visiting the nearby Tam O'Shanter city farm or Bidston Windmill.

Nevertheless, Springwood cemetery is a lovely place to let your carcass rot into eternity, mainly because it's so large, big enough to necessitate a trio of chapels. It's the closest thing this city has to those vast European places with a thick forest of headstones and complex stone memorials, most of them standing above incredibly famous corpses. Springwood is a lush, organised cemetery that is pleasant to walk around, but if you're out for a stroll there's much less morbid places nearby that you could just go to instead. Otherwise there's a danger you'll glance a funny name on a tombstone and giggle in front of a funeral. And that's just awkward.
