View from Kensington cafe down Kensington gardens

Stopped by for a quick salad this afternoon as I was in the area and feeling a bit peckish! In the 8 years of living in Brighton, this is another place where I have completely failed to go! It's highly rated by Brightonians and visitors alike, and I can see why. It has that quirky independent Brighton charm, and you really feel that when you go inside. The balcony area has a lovely view of Kensington Gardens and the laines, it's quite cool to see all the hustle and bustle going on around you while you sit quietly with a coffee or some food. I've given Kensington Cafe a 3, but I do intend to revisit and hopefully improve on the rating. I ordered a salad with chicken and halloumi, however it only came with halloumi! I didn't mind though, the halloumi was cooked just the way I like it. The salad itself was nothing out of the ordinary, lettuce, cucumber, tomato. It did come with a lovely home made hummous and homemade coleslaw that I really enjoyed. Something in the salad tasted really bitter though, and I'm not quite sure what it was! I will definitely come here again and maybe try something else. The couple sitting opposite me had burgers that looked really good.

Come for the view, not good (or good for you) food. Everything is either greasy and fried, swimming in butter, or both! Neither my stomach nor tastebuds are fans of that kind of stuff, so it came as a not-so-pleasant surprise when my plate landed on the table. (Do I send it back and risk having my "new" toast spat on and rubbed across someone's bum? Do I eat what I can?) I opted for choice #2, not wanting to cause a fuss. Didn't manage to eat much, but the bird's eye people-watching sort of made up for it.

As I was making my way from the Brighton Railway Station to the beach this place sort of jumped straight out at me, or at least the sign caught my attention. Despite it being just a narrow door on the ground floor, it wasn't necessarily hidden, particularly since I found it. Anyway, since I was looking to try out some places down here in relation to coffee I decided to head upstairs and have a look around. Well, I have to admit that the place isn't bad, and neither is the coffee. Actually, the offer proper English breakfasts as well, though at the time I wasn't hugely interested in eating. What was cool was the balcony (after which it is named) that looks out over the narrow mall below. Actually, the balcony isn't all that large, though they do have a decent number of booths inside. The other thing that I loved about the place was that grungy feel about it. Okay, I won't go as far as calling the place awesome, but it was still pretty cool, and I wouldn't hesitate coming back again.

I love the Kensingtons. Since I was a student I went there everyday after lectures to drink cheap but tasty coffee, eat breakfasts (they have great veggie alternatives) and chat to the friendly staff. They play good music, and it has a really nice, relaxed atmosphere.

Another great greasy spoon. However, rather than focusing on the superb "Big Meat" or "Big Veg" (for the veggies) breakfast options, I am going to talk about the real "draw" of Kensington's which is their fantastic balcony area. Giving you one of the best views of Brighton life - sea views aside - you can satisfy your greasy lust whilst simultaneously taking in the vibrant buzz of the North Laines: what I would deem the "heart of Brighton". If the weather is good, I cannot find a better vantage point to simply sit and observe. There is not much else to say, other than check it out.

It's quite cozy inside but Brix had booked a table. Despite its proximity to the station, it was a nice relaxing place to chill and chat. It did get busy later with football fans and we vacated our table so that others could eat There was a good varied menu with some ambitious dishes on there. I was warned that the portions size is generous here and you certainly won't go away hungry. You know it's a good menu when it's really difficult to choose I eventually settled on scallops with black pudding and potatoes served on salad including apple. The portion was huge and while the presentation wasn't fine dining and certainly wasn't intended to be fine dining, the combination of flavours was spot on. The scallops were sweet and I appreciated the fact that they had left the coral on - there is so much flavour there. The slightly spicy and deep flavour of the black pudding was the perfect foil and the salad dressing was well judged. Yum This is a pub with a serious kitchen. Recommended!

Inside you are greeted by an impressive selection of wines and ales, enough to please any potential connoisseur. While this isn't exactly something to write home about, the food certainly is. Inside the Yeoman, you won't find reconstituted burgers with a helping of soggy chips. You will instead be given the task of choosing from a weekly menu of locally sourced dishes, combing traditional British cooking with a modern continental influence. This isn't the cheapest lunch you will ever have, but it is possibly the best one you'll find in Brighton. The Yeoman would be more at home in trendy North London, not 20 yards from Brighton station's smoking area. That however, is our gain, and not London's. If you are searching for a warm meal, this pub won't be for you. However, if you really want to try good food, then look no further.

They have quite a big food menu. A cross between burgers and tapas. I have eaten here quite a few times - usually tend to stick to the tapas style dishes as I like to share. To be honest, it's been pretty hit and miss with the food. Last time I had the squid (which wasn't great) but the polenta chips and white bean hummous were to die for! But as a said, can be very hit and miss. Saying that, that doesn't stop me from coming back here! The staff are all absolutely lovely. On the weekends they have a DJ playing, always gets very busy and has a great atmosphere. The interior is fab! Very Americana. The whole bar is lined with beer bottles, all of which they have sold in the past.

Menu sounded intriguing and we ordered the burger with triple-cooked chips, flank steak and the pig cheeks. Overall the mains were good however I found my burger to resemble McDonald's Big Mac. This may be because they also use a gherkin sauce. We decided to also order dessert which unfortunately was a mistake. Portions and presentation left is disappointed as we ended up paying £10 for them. I can't even recall what my partner ordered. It looked like 3 dollops of Nutella spread with thyme in them. I had the doughnuts which I didn't think were cooked well. Drinks were also a bit pricey in here. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be coming back nor can recommend this place. I did note that the service was decent.
