Super lovely clerk: "... yeah, we've been open for 6 months..." *insert overly dramatic fist shake here* Damn you interwebs - you have raw food failed me for the last time! But the fact that I have been driving a whole extra hour out of my way for the last six months aside - i'm super stoked this Burnaby location has popped up. As I stated with much gusto in my Surrey Meat Packers review, I have fur monsters at home that eat a raw diet and SMP has been my go-to spot for years for price/service. Crudo is the new incarnation of SMP, delightfully closer to home. They only offer raw pet food (so no pepperoni binges while shopping for the critters) but the whole operation has made some serious improvements on its predecessor, so I give it a hearty 5 stars. Why it's awesome: 1. Same great price point of SMP, closer to home. Jolly Meats (their North Vancouver location) comes in a bit higher but all three come in drastically lower then most traditional raw food spots. $100 worth of food will coast me 2 months here, whereas $100 previously would buy me little over a week at the more boutique brands. 2. They've got spiffy new packaging! Which makes the thawing process a lot less messy and I don't have to hack at the frozen pieces to lob off a block when they've stuck themselves together. Each pound is individually packed - easy, peasy, lemon squeezy. 3. The service staff here are super duper lovely. 4. It doesn't smell. It's not that SMP smells abnormally bad... it smells like a butcher = dead things. This smells like a clean shop = significantly better then dead things. 5. It's crazy clean and everything is well labelled in coolers. 6. They let you park in their loading dock and then help you carry your giant box of meat back to your car. They don't even make fun of you when you try to do it yourself, in heels, while carrying coffee and nearly break your neck on the stairs.... 7. The bulk boxes don't come in the strange waxed paper boxes that annoy our recycle men so very much. My only complaint is that you can't get beef with bone and organ mixed in (which was available previously at SMP). You can get plain beef or beef, bone and veggies. As I am a rebel and feed this "dog food" to my cats, I don't need the veggies. But that's just me being particular. It's cheap. It's decent food. It's a HELL of a lot better then kibble. And now it's closer to home. 5 stars easily. Save yourself the vet bills and make the transition to raw food. This place will keep that choice from burning your pocketbook.

Her poop was terrible, and her gas could clear a room! She had diarrhea all the time, and when she vomited, there would be undigested kibble in it. In desperation, I picked up some Red Dog Blue Cat frozen raw food at Tisol, despite the cost, just to see what would happen if we switched her back to raw. It was practically a miracle! Firm, normal poop, no gas, and she actually wanted to eat! I started researching how to make your own raw food, because there was no way I was paying more for my dog food than I spend per day feeding myself. I ended up stumbling across the Surrey Meat Packers website and read up on their raw dog food line. The cost of it is comparable with the kibble we were buying at Tisol, but she loves it and so do I! No more disgusting poop! I usually buy her the chicken and vegetable food, but she's tried the beef and veg and the chicken/beef/veg as well. I usually add a bit more vegetable to her diet as well. We also buy her the chicken carcasses, as she goes crazy for them. Dad works in Surrey so we also shop at that location as it is on his way home from work. The staff at both locations are friendly and well informed.
