I had an absolutely amazing experience here! I'm a first-time pet owner, and I walked into the store with a list of things the internet told me to get (which, of course, usually isn't reliable). I kept returning to the store owner asking questions and where to get certain items. She was courteous and helpful, telling me tons from her personal pet owner experience and even recommending me some pet blogs to look up. At some point, I asked for catnip, and she asked me if I was getting a kitten. Apparently, kittens shouldn't have catnip, and I didn't know that! She gave me the correct information many times, even when it meant I would purchase fewer items. I would have purchased way more things that I probably wouldn't use, had it not been for her authenticity and good spirit. I'm definitely going to be a long-term customer with this store. read more

This update is based only on the fact that when I went there tonight, that they sold absolutely nothing for Ferrets. The man I asked working there didn't even know what it was. He didn't speak much English, and thought I meant Parrots. I showed him a picture on my phone and he still wasn't sure what it was - other then the fact it had fur not feathers thus it wasn't a Parrot! I found the small animal section on my own ,and they had items for Hamsters, Gunny Pigs, Squirrels, and even Rats, but no Ferret food or treats . I have been going to this store for the daily raw feeding needs of my dogs for just over 1 month. Although it does not specialize in raw food, it carries a respectable selection of raw food (meat and bones) for both cats and dogs. Surprisingly, the prices for their raw food are the same as True Carnivores on West Boulevard in Kerrisdale and substantially (over 30%) cheaper than Bosley's on Denman Street the West End for the same raw food brand that I buy. However, the brand yeast powder that I buy is more expensive (almost 50%) at Van Pet than at Bosley's. The staff members are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I'm glad that I don't have to drive through the annoying downtown and bridge traffic to Kerrisdale anymore just for dog food and I'm more than willing to trek down to Yaletown from Coal Harbour for the service and the price of the food that I buy. read more

Value: most items are in line with large chain stores - some items may be less some a little higher by pennies. The store is well organized and clean. Great pet store with excellent selection of food and products. I was able to find what I was looking for quite easily and the staff were friendly and helpful in answering my questions. Friendly staff and good selection of pet toys, accessories, and food. We use them for the Red Dog Blue Kat raw food which is the same or better price as found in other stores around town. I like that the shop is utilitarian/practical versus trying to emulate the high-end/floofy Yaletown vibe. I've been shopping here for years, there may have been an owner change at some point, but with regards to the current owners and staff - awesome! Reasonable prices and a great selection that far surpasses anything the trendy pet boutiques of Yaletown have to offer.. VanPet pretty much has it covered. I originally started shopping here because they delivered, I don't think they officially offer that service anymore - but they continue to deliver to us, we're close by and it's really convenient for me. Even more awesome -- and a bimonthly highlight of my dog's life -- is that they always throw in a nice assortment of complimentary treats for her.. If you're looking for expensive collars or cutsie clothes this isn't the place for you, go to one of yaletowns many pet boutiques. If you're looking for a wide selection of toys, treats and food this place is great. Friendly staff, great selection of quality products, and a convenient location - these all make Van Pet a great neighbourhood pet store. Yes, the prices are higher than at other stores, but hey, this is Yaletown. For that fact alone, I don't give 5 stars. If I need to pick up some food for the cat during my lunch, I don't have time to trek to lower Davie or Kits. Most of the other shops nearby cater specifically to dogs (again, this is Yaletown!). Supermarkets - even the high-end ones - don't carry the brands our fickle boys wants. Van Pet does! I have been coming to this location for many years now. So far I have nothing but good things to say about this place. Every staff and the owner specially is very helpful and knowledgable of the product they sell and carry in the store. Also you will see quality products in terms of accessories and novelty items for your pets. I just want to say how welcoming and accommodating and friendly the owner is and it's just a really good place to go to and it will make you keep coming back over and over again. Now that I live a little bit further from Yaletown but still a decent walking distance To van pet. Van Pet is my go-to place to food/toys/litter for my furry loved ones. In the beginning, my visits to Van Pet were pretty routine, and I was generally in and out most of the time I needed something. The staff are very friendly and are super knowledgeable about the products they sell - perhaps even more so than my vet. After years of ignorance feeding my cat Fancy Feast (which led her to becoming an obese tubby thing) I was persuaded by the owner to try a raw diet. The pounds flew off, energy levels shot up, and I've never looked back. It's super refreshing to find a small group of amazing pet owners who genuinely care about the health and happiness of your pet versus being driven by a sales quota. Van Pet staff can not only tell you what's good for your pet, but *why* it's good, and how it's different than what's not. After getting a dog with my boyfriend, we had bought some food that didn't agree with his stomach, and the owner was generous enough to let us exchange an already opened bag of food for a different product. He's been a chipper little thing since. It would take a lot for me to change my mind about going to Van Pet. Overall I've found their service solid and consistent. Definitely worth a go if you're considering a pet store for your fuzzy loved ones. read more

I always come here for quality food. It's been my 7th visit and I am always welcomed when I walk in and appreciate the huge selection of natural food they carry - some of it really cheap, too (probably the newer brands they are testing out?). Tons of toys and dog/cat treats to choose from. My only complaint is that they always offer to stamp off every bag of food I purchase, but never keep records of this upon my next visit. The idea is that if I purchase 10 bags, I get the next one for free, but they don't seem to keep track. Cute little pet supply store in Yaletown. I stopped by here on the weekend and was pretty impressed. Considering it's not the biggest store, they have a pretty huge selection of food and supplies to choose from. Cat food that I can't find at TISOL or Petsmart I found here. I had always enjoyed going to this place until recently. My dog loves it too. BUT now I'm disappointed and will be shopping elsewhere. They had this program where each bag of the same full size dog food would count towards a free bag. My dog is now 1 1/2 years and their records don't reflect all or basically any of my dog food purchases. Obviously with my dog's age I would have more than met that quota by now. Even though I feel this is in fact an error on their part (likely staff not entering phone number properly) they basically said too bad and making it seem my fault. Who keeps food receipts for that long? Not good customer service in my opinion :( read more

This is the only place I get my dog supplies!! The owner is the best. She always remembers every frequent customer's dog names and her treats are very generous! Always clean and organized any given time of the day! My dog actually runs to the store when he knows we are nearby so he could get the pepperoni treats :) If you need help they're quick. This place is amazing. They special order my dogs foods for me without any hesitation and always has treats ready for my boys when we go in. She remembered who I was by the second visit and without hesitation I would recommend any pet owner to go here. The prices are not outrageous and the store is always very clean and organised. I have seen dog owners taking there dogs for a walk and the pets recognise the store and literally run to the door forcing the owners follow along. Now that's saying something!!!! read more

Hated my visit to this store. The older foreign ladies who run the place are rude and it's very hard to understand their english. She fed my dog some greasy meat without asking me whether it was ok, and when I asked her to stop, she ignored me. I spent several minutes with her trying to understand her terrible english when answering a simple question I had... I wouldn't reccomend this place to anyone unless you speak with an outlandish accent. read more

Bought my cat food here for over a year. The store has a loyalty program. Once you buy 12 bags, the 13th bag is free. When i returned to get my free bag, my loyalty card was conveniently missing. And the owner would not honour the free bag. Unfortunate. Won't return. read more

I love this store. The staff are always very friendly and knowledgeable and the store has everything you could possibly need. It has boutique like items and with way better prices. They have have every possible type of food u want, so many different toys and treats, any medicinal stuff, peepads, carpet stain removers, dog beds, carriers, clothes..... I think you get the point! ( I have a yorkie , so not sure if they have things for other animals, but I've seen a lot of cat items when inside. The main lady that works there most of the time( not sure if she is an owner or not) but she is the absolute the best. She is always friendly to me and my dogs and she always has treats for them. They also offer a point system so everytime you buy something you get points for it, which then you end up getting money on Ur account after u spend a certain amount which u can save or use. I have been going to Van Pet for quite awhile now to get all of my dog supplies as it is convenient to get to. Although some of the staff are not knowledgeable about certain things, my only complaint is about their loyalty program. They offer a loyalty stamp program where once you buy ten bags of food, you receive a free bag. I have been going here for a very long time and my dog eats two bags a month. For a very long time, more than half a year, we have not gotten a single free bag yet. They seem to not keep a proper record of the amount of purchased dog food. Every time as I would check out, I would ask how many bags I have purchased and every time I would get the same response. Upon my last visit, I have asked kindly for the lady at the counter to remember to write down the bag of dog food I purchased and she rudely slapped the receipt onto the counter and said "ok". read more
