This town was definitely very cute. The city kept the original architectural storefronts,and every person we encountered while walking the main street was welcoming. In fact, as I was taking a picture of the bank a resident told us to head in the bank and see some of the town artifacts. It was amazing to see the old postcards and letters of monetary worth involving a cow that was hit by a train. The town offers free Wi-Fi and there website is up to date on things to do.

The one drawback: pricey to own or rent, though with its location, real estate here is considered to be relatively recession-proof. Living here for the past 15 years has offered my family the best of both worlds - tree canopies, wooded area, a walkable neighborhood, the river and hiking along the canal nearby, a fabulous park dedicated to the arts (complete with artist yurts), all less than three miles from the DC-MD line. The boundaries of the tiny, sliver of a town - its total area is just 0.10 square miles -- are the Potomac River (with Cedar Island and Chautauqua Island between the town and the full river) and MacArthur Boulevard forming the long sides of the rectangle; the short side at one end is close to Wilson Lane, with an entrance to Clara Barton Parkway at the other. The centerpiece of the town is the historic Glen Echo Park (originally an amusement park where Glen Echo residents and their neighbors protested for desegregation). A gorgeous Dentzel carousel, fully restored, graces the park, which is now part of the National Park Service. There are year-round classes and more in dance, theater, music, and the rest of the arts. Neighborhood volunteerism is strong, including ongoing commitments to nature preservation and protecting the watershed in the town (Cabin John Creek and Minnehaha Creek both run through Glen Echo). There are regular organized volunteer outings to remove invasive vines that threaten trees, creek cleanups, and removal of non-native plant species. With its own tiny post office snugged into the quaint Town Hall, folk sculptures gracing porches, family-owned businesses including a pharmacy and hardware store, plus easy access to put your kayak into the Potomac or walk along the Canal (where in the springtime you can discover baby ducks), I find it easy to forget you're just a short distance from the hustle and bustle of the nation's capital. The town's geographical neighbors are Bannockburn, Cabin John, and the Potomac River - all good company. So's the occasional little newt or box turtle I find wandering in my yard. Abundant deer, bunnies, and foxes make appearances as well, and if you sleep with your windows open, you might be lucky enough to have the hoots of owls make you chuckle before bedtime. (If you're unlucky, during mating season you might be kept up for hours by horny - not horned - owls.) Schools for the area in some of the best in all of Maryland: Bannockburn Elementary, Pyle Middle School, and Walt Whitman High School. My kiddo thinks it's the "best place to live, ever!" When we finished our cruise down the Potomac, we decided to spent the time we had left in the day walking around here. We got on the free trolley to help us see as much as possible and that was a good choice. It covers a lot of the town and makes it easier to see more if you're pressed for time. There are so many shops and restaurants and historic buildings to see. Every style of cuisine is covered. You could spend days here and never get bored. I wished for more time but ultimately had to find a nice restaurant for dinner and call it a day way too quickly!

INCOMPETENT. I think that says it all…read more Both the local rent-a-cops (I use cops/police loosely in this review)and town hall. The police dept nor the town government have any social media or outreach programs that invite a platform for a conversation (ie; community issues like Racism, the drugs and the addicts that effect quality of life for us that live here,the speeding issues, the vandalism, breaking in cars) . Both the police and town hall are good at not being avail for a phone call, left on hold or when you do reach someone, they spend their useless time blowing smoke in hopes you go away. The police have been great with blaming residents that it's their fault for living here. This town is still in the dark ages. Touting "up and coming" as a lure for new residents. The police work extra hard at talking at people instead of doing their jobs and correcting/arresting/ticketing people responsible. If you need a cop, I'm sure they're over at Graydon manor or Brunswick crossing screwing around if you need them. If you like the feeling of being a victim or the feeling of helplessness. Brunswick Md is the place for you. Otherwise, find a place in Frederick county. The board of supervisors are more willing to talk to their constituents and your taxes go to better use. Furthermore if you need help, the Sheriffs office is full of professionals that are WILLING to do their jobs. (I apologize to the security guards for putting the Brunswick police on the same plain as your occupation)
