History was the reason I rented two nights at The Old Courthouse Inn. The inn's lovely, historic…read moreexterior grabs the viewer's attention and distracts attention from what's nearby. What's inside is even more distracting. The owners were gracious and accommodating, even providing a tea kettle, and helping the two least-techy guests they've ever had figure out the fridge and TV. Check-in was easy, and assistance was offered with luggage. The king-sized bed was comfortable . The room was clean, and the windows provided lots of daylight. The cleaning staff did a great job during our stay, which we appreciated. It was wonderful having a café in the building that served very good biscuits and eggs benedict. Breakfast is included with the lodging! The room we stayed in had some fragile knickknacks. At times we were afraid to move, for fear of knocking them over, especially when using the rolling desk chair that had a life of its own. There are fragile knickknacks throughout the common areas with many "do not touch" signs. Because the building is historic, heat in midwinter requires pre-set radiators with "Don't touch" notices and a portable radiator that warns users to not set above medium. Outlets require strategic consideration, in order to not trip fuses. The interior stair handrails' were wrapped with holiday decorations, which made them mostly useless. My husband is disabled, and I erred in not requesting a room on the main level. He felt vulnerable on the stairs because of the decorations removing the ability to grab on. The bathroom door bumps into the toilet and therefore does not open fully into the bathroom; some maneuvering was needed to access the toilet. The bathroom fan couldn't keep up with shower condensation, so we continued to be bathed by water dripping from the ceiling after stepping out of the shower. It was like an unplanned final rinse. Be prepared to wait a while for hot water to show up in the bathroom sink or shower. There are only two chairs in the room, both uncomfortable. The rolling chair mentioned above, and a not very "comfy" chair. Our druthers are that hotel living areas have at least one very comfy chair or couch. Lamp lighting was dim throughout the common areas and our room. It was difficult to read a book with the lighting provided. Breakfast for lodgers is in the Cafe on the main level. Oddly, in the dead of winter and at 7 a.m. (when the cafe opens), a VERY dim light was the only one on in the hallway on our floor. We had to use a flashlight to find our way downstairs and back upstairs after breakfast. In addition, the two main entrances at the back of the building had no lighting at night. Unnerving, in winter. Some of our complaints can be attributed to the fact that the building is historic, but most could have been remedied (such as lighting and furnishings) to make our room and the common areas more comfortable and safe.

Ever thought about traveling back in time and living to tell the tale? The Old Courthouse Inn (in…read morePowell River, B.C.) gives you that very opportunity. As a historian and an archaeologist, I thought it would be neat to spend the weekend in this establishment. Located in the heart of the Old Townsite, constructed in 1939 in the form of my favourite Tudor-style architecture and once used as a jail, police station and courthouse, there was no way I'd turn it down. The building itself is very well kept. Having underwent a few renovations, the charm is still preserved as the original doors, locks, windows, lights, etc. are all intact. There are also several pictures and knick-knacks donated by the locals that tell the story of Powell River's pioneer days. Prices are reasonable and all rooms come with a self-serve continental breakfast. In addition, each room has its very own television and wireless internet. Not very vintage, you say, but it was a nice luxury to have during the hockey season. The staff is great, the view of the Sunshine Coast was beautiful and to experience a glimpse of what life was like back in the day was a real treat. All-in-all, I find it very fortunate that Powell River was able to integrate its history with our modern-day necessities. I am all for the preservation of cultural heritage and I can say that they've done an exceptional job with the Old Courthouse Inn.

I have already left a review on Google but I felt like it was my duty to really expand on it here…read more This place is absolutely TERRIBLE. We showed up for our reservation with a party of 6 and there was no one at the desk - just a sign that said that there was no receptionist and to call a number. But lo and behold, when you call the number it just rings a cell phone on the front desk! Waited for an hour before a "manager" showed up. His first question was "what time is it?" before attempting the most half-hearted of half-assed attempts to assauge the many angry guests in the lobby. At some point he told all of us that the rooms weren't ready, they won't be ready any time soon, and that it is what it is. Did I mention he reeked of alcohol? After about 10 minutes he seemed he had enough of this whole ordeal and sped off on his golf cart. I counted at least 4-5 other groups, each with probably worse stories than ours. Showed up on time to their reservation, no one responding to them for hours, before an aggressive and confrontational man did. A lady, Erica, finally showed up to try and fix everything that had happened, but you could already see how far south things had gone. The only phone line was being left unmonitored for the entire day (a busy Saturday weekend). Guestrooms that you could literally just walk into, in various states of disrepair, some having been clearly left for multiple days with garbage piling up into the corners. Erica told us her partner, the owners nephew, was coming over to remedy the situation - but that it would still take another 2-3 hours. Erica eventually managed to get us some bedsheets and toiletries. But even after we personally lined all the beds and threw out all the garbage, it was still way too gross to sleep in. So we left. Got back on the ferry, cancelled a weekend trip and just - left. It's crazy. You pay $300+ a night for a room and you get service worse than a dive motel. I'm sorry but avoid avoid avoid. We spoke to multiple people who had come by who all voiced their concern that management had gone extremely south. Owners, if you're reading this - take control of your business before its too late. And Erica, bless your heart - but run far far away from this, for your own sake.

The location is super. Your view is a quiet marina and the mountains and ocean surrounding. See my photo. We got our exercise walking up and down the stairs several times a day to chill on the dock and relax. The hotel rents boats and kayaks but we didn't partake this time. Our room was very spacious and was clean. The king bed was comfy and there was lots of room for luggage. The bathroom was big too and seems fairly recently reno'd. There is a jetted bathtub but unfortunately the night we tried to use it we ran out of hot water before it could fill. The kitchen has a full sized fridge and dishwasher but isn't fully stocked. For example, there were no paper towels, recycling bin, or ice or ice cube tray. We had to buy ice from a bar around the way. The BBQ worked very well! The room was somewhat dated in terms of decor, especially for the price, I would expect a bit more. We used the hot tub daily. The sun deck area has a beautiful view but sadly, only 2 lounge chairs on their last legs. As we treated the trip as "glamping" this was not a huge bother but those expecting a 5 star resort should lower their expectations. Overall, I would return as the setting and vacation was enjoyable for us and we felt very comfortable at the resort. I could have used another day!

I am proud to review this splendidly wonderful little B&B they call the Willow Guest House…read more Before I begin the review, I think it is imperative that I preface it with a small but relavent note about myself. I am a well traveled person however, for all intent and purposes, I am very much a city guy. And being so, have a particular disposition regarding the finer things in life; the little but important conveniences of nicer living. So I would comfortably say that I have high expectations when it comes to accommodations and anything I plan to pay for or during a vacation. So having traveled a great deal, I have experienced a wide spectrum of quality in services and accommodations throughout the world. I am extremely pleased to say that I have never experienced any accommodations quite like the one at the Willow Guest House. In short, it truly felt like I was coming home. My biggest apprehension when it comes to B&Bs is the imbalance most B&Bs have between the business and the home. Either it is too business like with the warmth and homely coziness of The Adams Family or too much home and not enough business which leaves for rather awkward interactions and no sense of privacy. The Willow Guest House has this balanced magnificently. Never once did I feel like an intruder or awkward. Warren and Dee (the owners) are the kindest and most generous people I have ever met. The moment my girlfriend and I stepped into their home, it felt like we were family. It was quite remarkable actually. Their rare ability to be unconditionally welcoming and genuine is so refreshing that I found myself wishing our trip was longer than two nights! They are a perfect team and care so much about their B&B that every single detail towards excellence is considered. I would come back and stay at their brilliantly wonderful B&B any chance I can get. In fact I wish every hotel in Whistler would take some notes of what true hospitality and comfort is. This is undeniably the BEST BED AND BREAKFAST I have EVER had the pleasure of visiting. You will not be disappointed when you book with Warren and Dee. They are a true gem.

While travelling on business recently, my husband realized that not so much as a garden shed was available in Courtenay because of a large influx of visitors for the BC Seniors Games. Through the Chamber he found the only room in the whole area and that was only because of a last minute cancellation. The hosts were divine, the room was lovely, the price was right and breakfast was amazing. He had such a nice time. They have two upstairs rooms with a full kitchen and living area for guests... you can cook your own food, hang out and watch TV and then go down to the hosts kitchen for a made to order breakfast. Five stars just for the home made granola!

Beware of Unscrupulous business practices! Anyone traveling to Powell River please be extremely…read morecautious if you stay at the Beach Gardens Resort and Marina. If you are thinking about booking this property, I would strongly advise you to reconsider. I stayed at the Beach Gardens Resort and Marina for one night, while traveling to the Sunshine Coast. At check in I was informed that a $200 damage deposit would be charged to my card in addition to the nightly charge for the room. I figured it was similar to the pre-authorizations for incidentals etc so I wasn't overly concerned at the time. My initial impression of the property and the check in attendant was that they both seemed a bit sketchy. I know myself well enough though to know that I should have listened to my intuition and that What happened next should have come as no surprise. There was a notice posted in the room with the check out instructions. The instructions were to leave the key cards in the room and invoices would be emailed the following day. I figured the reason for this was that they were short-staffed so I left my key cards on the dresser as instructed and left. A few days had passed and I hadn't received the refund or an email with my receipt. I contacted the hotel through Expedia and received a reply from Cheryl Ilott, the Rooms Division Manager, on Aug 15th, confirming that the charge for the deposit had been released. The message I received from Cheryl stated, "We released it the next day on our end and it is now up to your bank when they do it." Cheryl Ilott. The message was very straightforward. It was clear from her response that the property was confirming that they had released the $200 damage deposit and any further delay was due to my bank. Essentially they were removing themselves of any liability for the deposit not being returned to my card and transferred the blame to my bank. Another 5 days had passed and there was still no refund, so on Aug 20th I contacted my bank. My bank confirmed that the charge had not been refunded as I had suspected. The agent asked me to contact the hotel to confirm the transaction details in order to get proof that they had released the deposit. I reached out to Expedia to see if they could assist me as I had made the booking through their site. It was at that time I was informed by the Expedia agent who had contacted the property on my behalf, that the TV was broken and the deposit had not been released. Firstly this entire broken TV scenario is a complete and utter fabrication. I was never informed of any of this by the hotel nor did they ever email me a receipt of my stay as is their protocol. I am an experienced traveler and have never been accused of damaging a TV, a hotel room or any its contents. I'm at a loss for how I could be accused of this by these people. I was given no details of the damages to the TV, no explanation of the charges or proof to support this ridiculous accusation. Although I am unfamiliar with this situation I can't imagine that any reputable business would just withhold a damage deposit without the courtesy of informing their customers of the charges. It goes without saying that this is not a reputable establishment. The claim against me is untrue and the way in which the hotel staff handled this was extremely unprofessional. These people are not only dishonest but are desperate! How is it that on August 15th I was told by Miss Cheryl Ilott, their Rooms Manager, that the deposit had been refunded and then 5 days later on August 20th, the story changed completely and I'm being accused of breaking their TV? Overall, I feel really badly for the hotel employees and management. When people have to resort to such unethical business practices and wrongfully accuse their guests of damages to generate income due to their apparent lack of cash flow is just tragically pathetic. So many employees and businesses, especially those in the hospitality industry, have been hit hard by the pandemic. But that's certainly no excuse to lie and make these types of accusations. It's sad that there are people like this who lack integrity managing this hotel. It's unfortunate because the location is so beautiful. During my stay there I remember thinking about what a beautiful property it could have been if only it had been owned and operated by the right people. Maybe one day it could be amazing and all hope is Not lost. I hope that one day this will be a lovely place for travelers to stay and that these desperate people don't have to resort to lying and defrauding their guests for much longer. Hopefully my review will shed some light on this situation and I can make a positive impact by preventing other guests from being taken advantage of.

It isn't an uncommon occurrence for businesses to lose their mettle over the years, and let standards slip. However, I was stunned into silence when we arrived, as the owner of this motel actually raised her standards, instead of losing the plot. The grounds were immaculate. The rooms were like new despite the passage of time, and many guests over three years. There was just just one element to our stay that was less than endearing: our neighbours. On our first night, we chose to ignore all the noise next door, as we were extremely tired. On the second night, the noise commenced early in the evening, and by 11, it had worn us down completely. I wish I had approached the owner of the motel sooner, as she sorted out the problem instantly, and gave me her after hours number in the event the noise resumed. What a relief!
