Although academically the school is sound, I worry about students who are marginalized when their parents can't afford certain activities. On one such occasion, children who did not pay a $40.00 fee were sent back to class to watch as other children were splattered with Diwali colors as they ran around the field. As we look for inclusion of all children, why are poorer children of color being obstracized from these fun events? On another note I've heard that parents who contribute the most to the school are guaranteed their choice of teacher in the Fall. This is just yet another example of "Pay to play" in our stratified, divided world. Schools are supposed to be the great equalizer but apparently not at Playa Vista Elementary School.

The classrooms are spacious and well-stocked with a play kitchen, kid furniture, light up table, sensory activities, etc. We especially like the multiple expansive playground areas and the outdoor time that they get to explore and run around. It's also such a treat hearing new songs or prayers she learned from chapel time w/ Pastor Duling! The school is tucked away in a quiet Westchester neighborhood and I appreciate that it's not near any major streets with lots of cars or foot traffic, which makes drop offs / pickups easy. Each classroom has its own fridge where you can store your child's food and I love that I don't have to pack ice packs to keep lunches + snacks cold! One less thing to worry about in the rushed mornings. Communication during our initial enrollment last year was definitely disorganized, but there's been a change in management since then, so if you were turned off by that before, give it another try. They are on Brightwheel and responses are prompt, plus we get lots of photos each day of the kids activities.

There's one Charter school on LaBrea that has really good test scores; however, St. Eugene is better organized and the children are happier. I also believe that if catholic schools were evaluated my the same tests as public/charter schools, then St. Eugene would win. I speak to my son's teacher daily and I couldn't have survived this school year without Mrs. Robles and Mrs. Valencia. Mrs. Robles is such an amazing teacher that I wish I could clone her. I'm looking forward to beginning the next school year with the 2nd grade teacher. GV is our neighborhood school and we hadn't even seriously considered it, until a wise educator friend of mine encouraged me to check out their dual language (Spanish/English, on a 90/10 model that I think is ingenious) immersion program. What we found was a thriving, involved school with a dedicated principal, staff, and parent community that integrates kids and families from all walks of life. In addition to the DL program and learning academy, GV has a special needs program that is fully integrated with the rest of the broader school. We have a library, new computer room (thanks to a generous donor who happens to be a successful former GV student), arts and garden program, and a Dia de Los Muertos program annually that amazes. Not only is my daughter learning Spanish, she's learning what it means to be part of her full community. Also, she's picked up some pre-algebra along the way. Not bad for a humble public neighborhood school, huh? I'm so glad we didn't overlook it, and neither should you, if you're researching school options for your family.
