The staff treat all the kids and parents like family. They strive to provide a solid fundamental education (including homework help afterschool) as well as fun activities through out the year. They have terrific hours for working parents and we love the open door policy so I can stop in anytime. Let me start my first review by saying "I cannot recommend this school enough"!!!!!! As a first time mom, I was extremely anxious about sending my 3 yr old to pre school; she herself had some social anxiety and did not take well to new people (or children). After visiting a number of schools in the south suburbs, I felt comfortable enough after my visits to Salem to choose their program, and I'm so glad I did! My daughter has attended this school for 7 months now and LOVES the program; she has blossomed socially and truly loves her new friends and teachers. Equally as important, I am thrilled with the education she receives! In addition to learning the basics (writing her name, recognizing letters, words and numbers, music, etc.) I'm amazed at the spiritual concepts and life lessons she has learned from the teachers at this school (how many 3 year olds can talk to you about taking "personal responsibility")! The staff is so nurturing and loving to the children, all while promoting a high standard of respect and behavior with and amongst the children. My daughter who used to avoid people at all costs.....can't wait to get to school everyday and even asks why she can't spend the night! Having had my 4 kids in this school, I am changing my review. I'm not giving 5 starts because it's…read morenot perfect, BUT this school does not get the props it deserves. The principal is the best one to have happened to the school since my experience began. You can see the changes and feel them too. Parts of the school was updated to secure a safer entry and new office which now has a better function and looks nicer. The teachers are AMAZING. That's all I can say about that and as long as you know what amazing means we're good. Don't get distracted like I did by school numbers and ratings. If you are involved and engaged in your child's learning from the time they are born you will set them up to excel at this school.

For those of you who believe you must move to the suburbs to obtain a quality education for your children, it just ain't so!! Jones is small (700 students), academically rigorous as a public "Selective Enrollment School" (granted, with highly competitive admissions), and its most unique quality, remarkable diversity: 30% Hispanic, 24% White, 24% Black, 11% Asian, 8% Native American (in Chicago!), and 4% Multiracial. Here is one astonishing factoid that speaks volumes about the quality of education at Jones, and the depth and talent of the 200+/- member Class of 2008. Collectively, these kids were awarded $11.14 million in scholarships. That's something like $55,000 per student. Here is a representative list of the caliber of colleges represented by this year's graduating class: Bard, Barnard, Bennington, Carnegie Mellon, Coe, Cornell, Eugene Lang, MIT, NYU, Oberlin, Purdue, University of Chicago, University of Wisconsin - Madison, Wellesely, and many more. From the well used playground to the seasonal employees, I felt more than comfortable leaving my two boys J'miere and Damiere and they seem just as comfortable staying. Ammons day care which is an extension of Ingleside- Whitfield church has been the community for over thirty years or more. It's not just a daycare, but as a safe haven for children in the neighborhood. Ammons nursery is just east of the Dan Ryan which makes it easily accessed from anywhere in Chicago. Sitting on the corner of 76th St. Lawrence; one block from a major bus route and its location makes it a quick walk from anywhere in the neighborhood. In front of the building is the playground, its small but the children love playing there and have been since its original construction. Playground games, sliding, swinging, and slap happy laughter greets parents and visitor leaving them with gracious smiles as they get to the door. In order to get in the door Ms. Reynolds, the director, must buzz you in and you attention is immediately focused to the founders of the nursery. I look down the hallway to see Ms. Brown with her children, which are mostly two year old are singing and dancing in the classroom. I walk up stairs and see the head start class being taught by Ms. Waley and Ms. Robinson and they are being introduced to the wide world of colors and alphabets. Next to them I hear Ms. Foreman and the kindergartens applying the skills they learned in head start putting sounds and letters together to make words. Learning to read is the next step for the four to five years old in that class. Going down stairs in the back you will find the bigger children ages 7-12 with the after school program taught by Ms. White. The after school program is an enrichment of education and tutoring program for those who are eight through twelve years old. Ammons Day care is a great resource for the community. Neighborhood youth and adults are involved in the community Outreach putting Ammons nursery at the forefront of early childhood development in this neighborhood. Having partnered with Grand crossing Park and local schools that relationship gives children multiple places to go. Local volunteers come out and help our youth to succeed from basketball to dancing, reading to painting. In conclusion Edsel Ammons is a tradition school and with a great team. Volunteers and children make this a great community outreach center. I recommend Ammons to anyone who needs inspiration in child care. I give Edsel Ammons Five Stars.

Northside really is an exceptional place. I was a part of the first class to complete four years in…read morethe high school, and I can say, without a doubt, that Northside had the kind of impact on me that I don't think I could have had elsewhere. The staff at this school is remarkable not only because of their depth of knowledge on various subject, but because of the fresh approach that they take to education and the compassion that they show their students. It was my experience that the teachers at Northside didn't punch out as soon as the bell rang (or the music played). As for the overall environment, this school has always been extremely progressive in it's approach to the arts and it's dedication to pursuing them. The open mics used to be something of legendary quality for Chicago high school students, and that tradition has been carried on by the annual arts festival the school presents. I found myself completely prepared for college, but more importantly, completely prepared to go after the things in life I wanted to explore personally and artistically. Northside always treated me more like a human than a statistic, which is rare in the CPS. If I ever made the mistake of procreating, I'd be sending my kid here.

Students must apply, have a great academic record, and score very well on an entrance exam in order to be accepted. All academic classes are taught at the honors or AP level, which provides the challenge needed by motivated students. My daughter is a freshman here, and so far I've been very impressed with the curriculum, faculty, and teaching methods. The schedule resembles that of a university: each academic class meets twice a week. Every Wednesday is dedicated to an alternative learning program called "Colloquium" which gives students an opportunity to sample a variety of subjects. The administration is well organized and supportive of the staff. In addition, there are very strong parent organizations that contribute to the life and health of the school community. If you know of an academically gifted grade school student, I would highly recommend that you consider NCP when evaluating high schools.
