The best part about this place, in my opinion, is that they have delivery Indian food. I remember when I moved to this area, I was super excited about that. However, after trying it a few times, I stopped ordering. Their quality isn't the best and it is pretty pricey. I've known about the Kerry House since good ol my days at Piedmont High Back in the day it was labeled the "burnout" bar where randoms, vagrants and occasional students would come in. It was indeed a dive bar, but without college students or cougars. Now it's different. New look, new purpose and boy does this place have tons of potential. Slick new decor and updated taps. Although this place needs to take advantage of its prime location, maybe hire an indie dj that only plays alternative electronic music..... all I'm saying is, Piedmont Avenue is about to become busier, younger, and this place is sitting right in the middle of it. read more

I've never had a more shockingly impressive moment in a bar. I met my two business partners here for a drink. None of us had a single dollar in cash on us. There is a $10 minimum for credit card tabs so myself and Partner One got a drink on the corporate card. But two drinks is $9. "No problem we'll just sign for extra for a tip". But the bar tender wouldnt let us tip! He just gave us a bag of chips to bring the total to $10. Now I'm the type of person who feels really awful about not leaving a tip, and just as I'm signing for $10 and not a penny more, Partner Two walks in. I informed him of the $10 limit and so he opted to skip getting a drink. The bar tender overheard this, and gave him one for free! Only in Oakland can you not tip a bar tender and have him still give you a free drink! Plus you can bring in indian food from the place next door, and there is an upstairs area with a pool table and I don't think the smoke detectors work (cough cough). read more

Cool little dive bar with that 1970's alcoholic feel. 3 awesome things about this place: (1) you can order Indian food from the place next door and eat it there while you drink (2) I was able to get on a pool table my first time there without getting hounded by the regulars and (3) they are an old school, no nonsense DRINKING BAR. Leave your panties at home, sack up, and put 'em back. The reason this place looses a couple stars is the depression factor. There was the woman who put on every song from 1978 in the jukebox on in a row and sat there drinking by herself and singing along, as if she longed for her glory days. There was the incredibly drunk girl who was there sitting by herself at a table for what seemed like hours. And then there was... well... every guy in the place. But aside from that it's bad ass! After spending the previous few weeks in the winter wonderland that is Seattle's U-District dive bars, spending an evening in Kerry House was like descending into a hell where you have to trade a limb for a refreshing glass of water. Speaking of which...I heard that a pitcher cost SEVENTEEN dollars. Now, I'm new to the bay area bar scene, and maybe that sounds cheap to others, but where I'm from, a pitcher of delicious microbrew comes to about $12. To make matters worse, there was not much ambiance in the bar, and really limited seating. Also, it was a dive in name only. The clientle seemed pretty well-off and there was no threat of impending violence. The only positives: 1. The TV was showing B Roy and the Trailblazers pull out a victory 2. It looks like your run of the mill dive bar, but there are a few idiosyncrasies that make Kerry House stand out. First is the indian food next door. It's not the best, but man it is good when you've had a few beers. I treat it more as an add on to Kerry House. It's also pretty spacious and there's a pool table and TV's for sports. Service is nice and beer selection is decent. Stop here, get Indian food, drink a few beers, then head to Lush or Fenton's for desert. The perfect evening. read more

This place rules. But not in the sort of "Wow that was really fun. I had a great time there." You know, that Disneyland feeling...before you had to pay for everything. But listen, if you enjoy yourself some randomness (pick me, pick me) then you must visit this bar. For my first time in Oakland it provided just the right amount of interesting stimulation as the alcohol started to do its magic. Some guy lost his cell phone, which happened to be conveniently on our table. And when we offered it back he bought us a pitcher. I went here during the day. First of all, this ain't a dive bar- it was clean, didn't reek of shit, and had a friendly and cool bartender, in comparison to some of the douches you might come across. A real dive bar has sticky floors and tables, smells like stale beer and old people, angry sociopath alcoholic bartenders, and you end up smelling like the place after you leave. I probably would have hated this place when I was in my 20's- half empty, dark, no women whatsoever... They keep all their beer bottles in a brand new looking cooler thing behind the bar. Most of been really bored to notice a detail like that... Anyway, some of the other patrons were wasted- no doubt. I screwed up my timing and had two hours to kill in this place before a movie up the block, and ended up drinking a bit more than planned. I didn't see any "sketchy" people as previously described what so ever. This is just a neighborhood bar. Even though I am not a big fan of Piedmont Avenue, as it is a boring version of Grand Ave, I might come buy here in the evening to see if this place resembles the bar scene in the first Star Wars movie... read more

Review for the Restaurant: Aww man! It sounded so good on the menu but maybe we should have ate it right away or maybe we just had high expectations. My SO and I came here Saturday from our walking in the rain high. Indian food sounds just about right when you want warm food in your stomach and get back to the apartment to enjoy the day even further. We both ordered their chicken wraps. Tucked all into naan bread is tandoori chicken with lettuce, tomato, and sauce this wrap is an extra large messy burrito-style entree. Soooo messy, it actually was pretty frustrating to eat if you are a silly pants like me and take off the foil on one of the sides. However, it was just okay. I ate it all, surprisingly, but it was just that .... okay. No fireworks in the sky and OMG dive bar/Indian Restaurant amazes was said. I thought to myself that I must be having an off day. The first time I was here, I think it was before I had even moved to Oakland. I came back again on Friday and recognized that it was the same bartender that was there when I first came here. Although he's nice, it can take awhile to get a drink from him because he is either talking to other people or he's just not paying attention. definitely a dive. i finally went to kerry house a few weeks ago with a friend of mine who can't stop talking about it. we came in, ordered a pitcher of new castle, and went straight for the upstairs area. it was dirty and not much to look at, but there was a pool table to entertain us. we finally got fed up with having to run downstairs every time our jukebox selections ran out, so we made our way downstairs. i noticed a very mixed crowd had shown up since being upstairs, and that the indian food place next door had opened. we sat down at one of the large, broken tables to eat our grub, and as soon as it had opened, it closed again. the indian food place was open for about 10 minutes. we thought that was odd, but the food was pretty delic all the same. i would go to kerry house if i was in the the area, but i don't think i would go out of my way to go there again. to me, the point of being an adult is being able to get into nice bars, not drive 20 miles to go to a dive. read more

For me it's the perfect dive bar- it's exactly what a dive bar should be- cheap, strong drinks, no-fuss atmosphere, nice and helpful bartenders, chill spot. I live close to piedmont avenue so it's also walking distance. I keep forgetting this place is here but this amnesia will continue no longer. As a fan of places of ill repute, I love the Kerry House. Cato's is nice and all, but way more standoffish - people go to Cato's to talk to people they know. In Kerry House, you can strike up a convo with a random and spend the next ten minutes pondering and chuckling over the interaction. I love pool, and always manage to fit in a game or two. Of course, like any dive bar, there are downsides: I had to get a strange lady kicked out of the bathroom because she was talking on her phone in the stall for awhile, and the regulars seem to kinda hate each other sometimes, I've witnessed one fight and one almost fight in the 4 or 5 times I've been here. I think I would give it five stars if they weren't so sneaky and secretive about the upstairs.. when I ask about when it would be open, they mysteriously answer that they're not sure, maybe weeknights.. if the upstairs were open all the time, I would be happy as a clam. read more

Came here to meet with a guy I was dating after his kickball game because he knew I am a fan of dive bars. It took a while to get my order but it was one bartender and he was talking to some friends or regulars. Let's face it: Oakland's bar scene simply ain't all that, but there's far better places to go than the Kerry House. I'm all for dive bars, but this one rates in at submarine depth. There's a huge shortage of character here; whatever scraps of it that linger in the air and amongst the clientele don't put off the sense of endearing charm that I prefer when it comes to low-down watering holes. read more
