On the East (front) side: Worthy, the Confederate soldier to be hallowed and held in tender remembrance Worthy, the fadeless fame which Lancaster's soldiers won in defending the honor of the South, the rights of the States, the liberties of the people, the sentiments of the South, the principles of the Union, as they were handed down to them by the fathers of our common country. Our Confederate Soldiers On the South side: "God holds the scales of justice; he will measure praise and blame; and the South will stand the verdict and will stand it without shame." It was erected 1909 by the Lancaster Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. I'm not going to take sides, I'm only pointing out that it's here. This somewhat faded marker stands in front of the McBee Library and Railroad Museum which was…read moreclosed when I was passing through. In addition to the marker and the museum, there is also a caboose you can walk around (but not in). The marker reads, "This depot, built in 1914, was the second station built by the Seaboard Air Line Railway in McBee. The town, the most successful of those established along Seaboard's Columbia-to-Cheraw line after it was completed in 1900, grew so quickly that a new depot became a high priority by the end of the decade. This depot was both a passenger and freight depot until it closed in 1971. Now the McBee Library and Railroad Museum, it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1998." I was here to help a friend and appeared as his witness in his uncontested divorce proceeding. The…read morebuilding is easy to find in "downtown" Lancaster, with a large gravel/dirt parking lot behind. There was a security presence, with a local police officer walking people through a metal detector and wanding everyone who entered. I'm not sure if he was a Lancaster city officer or a Lancaster county deputy. He seemed pretty thorough. Clearly posted signs indicate that no pocketknives, purses or lighters are permitted. What was odd was that cell phones and beepers (who has a beeper these days?) were not allowed at all - you have to leave them in your car. I felt very disconnected for the hour we were there. No Yelp! What to do? There were a couple of well dog-eared magazines on tables in the waiting area, as well as a Coke machine. (60 cents per can. Bargain!) I had to actually... talk... with my friend. Weird. The courtroom was pretty simple with a bored looking bailiff (Rusty?), the white haired judge and a court reporter. Standard set up with two tables, chairs and a witness stand with readily presented Bible for the swearing in process. Easy, pleasy. Once our case was called, my friend's attorney asked him some questions, the judge asked his required questions, I was called and answered my questions and we were done within a very few minutes. Divorce granted. There are now two more single (and happier) people on the planet. Yeah, it's weird to post a review of a court. I'm not sure if I'll keep it. Yelp already had the listing. I wouldn't have reviewed it if i wasn't already here.

About 30 years later, it was enlarged by Samuel B. Massey. Local textile manufacturer and banker Colonel Leroy Springs remodeled the house 1906-1907. Springs' son Elliott, noted author and World War I flying ace, was born here, 1896. The house became city hall after a 1957 lease-purchase agreement with the city of Lancaster." It is obviously no longer city hall but is used for municipal purposes. The façade features a two-tiered pedimented portico defined by fluted columns with Doric order-influenced capitals. Located in the center of downtown Kershaw and next to the train station, this marker is on two…read moresides and points out the history of this small town. On one side, "Welsh's Station, a depot on the Charleston, Cincinnati, & Chicago Railroad built in 1888, stood at or near this site. The town of Kershaw was first named for Capt. James V. Welsh, who donated 63 acres on which to establish a town and promised the railroad title to every other lot laid out in it. When it was incorporated in 1888 the town limits of Kershaw extended one-half mile in every direction from the depot." And on the other side, "Kershaw Depot. This depot, built in 1926 by the Southern Railway, replaced a late 19th -early 20th century passenger and freight depot/cotton platform which burned that year. It is typical of 20th-century depots built throughout the Southeast. Primarily a passenger station, it also handled cotton and textile products from nearby farms and textile or cotton oil mills. The Kershaw Depot was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Erected by the Lancaster County History Commission, 2002" The current structure was built after the previous one was destroyed by fire. The railroad, which was now owned by Southern Railway company, transported passengers and cotton products from 1926 until the mid-1940s. There has not been passenger rail service here since then, though there is still various freight. The depot is a florist and craft shop today. So excited the library branch is back in Ridgeway. A small town always need a small library. They…read morehave their own parking lot on the side of the building. Most of their selection is heavily children based right now because children are probably use the library the most. They have 3 computers for the public. The librarian was very welcoming and inviting. Although they are new, they are still clean. As I was leaving the cleaning crew was coming in.

This site has so much history - the battle of Camden was fought here and some very notable figures…read morein South Carolina and American history solidified their legacies here . Many lost their lives here and some even remain here in unmarked graves . Unfortunately, as of July 2022 there's really not a whole lot out here . There's some poorly maintained trails and markers . Minimal amenities : there's one questionable porta-potty but I would take my chances squatting versus using it because I could smell it as soon as I exited the vehicle . If you visit make sure you pack the bug spray, sunscreen, water , hat and something to protect yourself with just in case . I'm told the city of Camden has plans to revamp the trails and land here to be more visitor friendly. I hope they do because there's so much potential to honor the history here and be more educational and welcoming to visitors . I hope I can revisit and add more stars!
