Very cool urban "archaeological" find...nobody but locals "in the know" seem to be aware it's even…read morethere! Found out about it from the very nice & informative bartender at Dust Off Brewing (check out doing to the YoCo Brew Trail; check into 6 breweries on the app & get a t-shirt). He couldn't quite remember how to get to it, but after some intensive research, found the geo coordinates. That was honestly the only way to find this place, plus a little guts & guesswork. You can quasi see some portion of the rockwork of the ruinous remains from the paved Riverwalk trail. The "easiest" way to get to the ruins is to follow the Riverwalk Piedmont Medical Center Trail to just before mile marker 1.25; you will see this steep wooden thing with awkwardly placed planks. You basically have to rock-wall climb your way up. From there you are on a mountain biking trail. Follow the arrows for just over a quarter mile and you will see some indicators of the ruins before they open up in front of you. You will most likely have the place to yourself. Really cool to wander around and take it all in. Just be careful with holes and don't walk on or within the actual ruins as they are pretty sketch & unsteady. There are spiders, snakes, and flying insects galore, so put on repellent and stay vigilant cuz it is deep woods! You can either get back down the way you came; I found this gray rock slope that I found easier to navigate than sliding down the wood thing I climbed up. Either way, really neat find and I'm so glad I explored to find it! The paved walkway along the Catawba is also a nice walk to and from!

With Fishing Creek winding nearby as it feeds into Fishing Creek Lake, this marker points out a…read moresignificant Revolutionary War skirmish that took place. The marker is along US-21 and there is room to stop to read it. The marker reads, "At this site on August 18, 1780 General Thomas Sumter camped with captured booty and 800 men. He was surprised and defeated by Lt. Col. Tarleton and 160 soldiers. The disaster followed only two days General Gate's defeat by Lord Cornwallis at Camden. The patriots lost 150 men killed and many captured, but Sumter escaped and soon rallied another large force." It is marker number 12-3 and it was erected in 1974 by the Chester County Historical Society. Sumter's men had halted to rest after days of marching in brutal summer heat, unaware that Tarleton had crossed the Catawba River and was closing in on their position. Tarleton launched a surprise attack while the Americans were scattered, many bathing, sleeping, or tending to captured supplies, and the result was a swift and overwhelming British victory. More than half of Sumter's force was killed or captured, though Sumter himself narrowly escaped the chaos. The defeat temporarily halted his campaign against British outposts and further strengthened Tarleton's reputation as Cornwallis's most aggressive field commander. Located in the center of downtown Kershaw and next to the train station, this marker is on two…read moresides and points out the history of this small town. On one side, "Welsh's Station, a depot on the Charleston, Cincinnati, & Chicago Railroad built in 1888, stood at or near this site. The town of Kershaw was first named for Capt. James V. Welsh, who donated 63 acres on which to establish a town and promised the railroad title to every other lot laid out in it. When it was incorporated in 1888 the town limits of Kershaw extended one-half mile in every direction from the depot." And on the other side, "Kershaw Depot. This depot, built in 1926 by the Southern Railway, replaced a late 19th -early 20th century passenger and freight depot/cotton platform which burned that year. It is typical of 20th-century depots built throughout the Southeast. Primarily a passenger station, it also handled cotton and textile products from nearby farms and textile or cotton oil mills. The Kershaw Depot was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Erected by the Lancaster County History Commission, 2002" The current structure was built after the previous one was destroyed by fire. The railroad, which was now owned by Southern Railway company, transported passengers and cotton products from 1926 until the mid-1940s. There has not been passenger rail service here since then, though there is still various freight. The depot is a florist and craft shop today. They have monthly performances which include concerts, chamber music groups, cappella, solo trombone (!) and piano and a symphony concert. About one a month for this series. The old Presbyterian Church is a brick structure that really resonates the sounds. Bench/pews are your seats. Cozy inside so everyone has a good seat. A balcony surrounds the teas and two sides of the former church. We will be reporting on events as we attend them. Tickets purchased prior to the event were $20 but at the door, we paid $30 each. Ouch! That said, other performances go go $10, 15 and $20. We happened to hit the highest price of $25.

Del Webb library is cozy and quaint, in other words, it's small but the librarians give their heart…read moreand soul into their work. You can see the passion they have for this library and the many patron who come here. When you're here it seems like a vestige back in time, no it's not modern, no there's not a big selection of books but it suits the patrons who tend to be seniors. Del Webb library is located near Sun City in Indian Land, which makes sense. There is a nice adult section, history section, young adult and children's section. Another thing I love about this library is you can purchase gently used books that others have donated. The price range is 25 cents to 4 dollars. If you take the time to browse, you'll likely find a great book to add to your collection. Also if there's a book you're looking for and they don't have it, they'll order from Amazon for you. Again, the staff here is wonderful and they more than make up for any short comings there may be.

It has…read moreample parking, it's big inside, it has all you need, a great selection of books, movies on DVD-s, computers. It's quiet, clean, well organized. I love the small bookstore located inside, they sell gently used books, various genres, in good shape, prices are cheap. You can find a great bargain in here. I also like the Indian hand made baskets and pottery they have on display, great little exhibit. If you're in the area and you love books and movies, this is a great place, worth checking out.

Welsh (1845-1906) persuaded the Charleston, Cincinnati, & Chicago Railroad to build a depot halfway between Camden and Lancaster, on what was then the county line between Kershaw and Lancaster Counties. The town was incorporated later that year and renamed in honor of Maj. Gen. Joseph B. Kershaw (1822-1894), prominent Confederate general and state senator from Camden." On the opposite side, "Kershaw, with a population of 500 by 1890, grew even more dramatically after an 1897 fire which destroyed most of the downtown. By 1900 a guide to Lancaster County called it "a pretty and prosperous town of about fifteen hundred inhabitants." Among the most significant early businesses here were the Kershaw Oil Mill (1902) and the Kershaw Cotton Mill (1912). The Benton Hotel on S. Cleveland St. was well known and frequently hosted tourists visiting the nearby Haile Gold Mine. Erected by the King Alfred Garden Club and the Kershaw Centennial Commission, 2002." I was genuinely surprised when I first moved to Waxhaw and saw their library for the first time. If…read moreyou're not paying attention then you'll miss it because it's a small house that has been repurposed into a library. The location is problematic because it's in a neighborhood off the main road in Waxhaw which would confuse some. When I went into the library, I noticed the lighting was poor and the selection of books and other materials was severely lacking quantity and quality. With a library this small, it's difficult to find a well known author or title by African Americans or other minorities. I'm not insinuating that this is done on purpose because I believe the county or city thinks that the demographics of Waxhaw, Marvin wouldn't be interested in these genres. I did find other books that catered more to a certain demographic of a certain political affiliation. If you're wanting a better library overall and you live in Waxhaw, I'd suggest going to the main library in Monroe. You can thank me later

Waxhaw Library is a tiny library however you can order books on the library's computers. No library…read morecard fees like other libraries. There's a good selection of DVDS for such a tiny library, and its children section is half the library. A town's library is key to the town's educational success. Vote in November for the referendum of Waxhaw building a much needed larger and up-to-date library for the sake of our children's future!!! Early reading is paramount to a better education! My son started reading at the age of three and has had amazing results from it. It's thanks to a great, well stocked library in Glastonbury, CT!
