One quiet little example of the fabric of our community is one of our radio stations, Keeping Real Variety in Music, KRVM. I listen in the mornings and at work. Every am is breakfast with the blues, and during the day they have a unique selection of alt rock favorites that are perfect for at-work listnin'. Probably my favorite evening show is Tupelo Honey with Shotgun Majors, but there's pretty much an evening program for all genres. Truly independent radio is a dying breed, and soon I fear none of our airwaves will be "free." KRVM is doing their part to maintain real music, and to do it with an educational focus. Eugene touts itself as a cultural heart of the valley with its Alton Baker Park, Hult Center&Bach Festival... and KWAX solidifies its stature as an artistic hub. It's the reason why you can hear James Blunt caterwauling "You're beautiful" on two DIFFERENT pop stations. Clear Channel has standardized pop music. In a way, it's a good thing. It makes great background music when you're banking, driving, shopping for groceries. When it comes to guilty pleasures, it gets 3 stars. I can rock out to Lady GaGa, La Roux, Rihanna, Madonna, and "indie" stars like Angel Taylor and KT Tunstall. The Clear Channel definition of "indie" usually means mainstream and slightly folksy. Think of Colbie Caillat, who marketed herself as an indie coffeehouse acoustic guitar diva, despite the fact her father produced Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk" and "Rumours." Clear Channel gets 3 stars for its averageness. Ryan Seacrest interviewing celebrities, colorfully reading the TWILIGHT series is worth it. It's like hot chocolate. You can't live on hot chocolate, but it makes life enjoyable.
