Underneath it all I'm afraid that this is still the cheap motel it was before the renovations. We were very excited to try out the hotel after seeing some great reviews and nice pictures on Instagram, so the day before we had called to ask for early check in - we were told no problem. I called the day we were supposed to check in before leaving to confirm we'd still be able to check in early - again, not a problem. Well, we get there (1.5 hours after confirming a room would be ready) and waited for about half an hour in the lobby to find out that they didn't have a room ready. Annoying but not a huge deal. The lady working the front desk (who was very kind and apologetic) then offered for us to eat lunch in the restaurant while we wait for a room to be ready - we kind of assumed that they were going to comp our lunches due to the mix up but no discount or comped meal was offered - a bit disappointing, but again not a big deal. What was very disappointing is that the "restaurant" was really just a bar with a very small bar menu - a couple burgers, wings, fries or poutine (as well as an extremely expensive salad). We were also informed that 1964, the "fine dining" restaurant which does have a full menu was not open while we were there, which I'd be more understanding about if the other restaurant had a proper menu - especially since there aren't a lot of options outside of the hotel at this time of year. After maybe 45 minutes, our room was ready. We get into our room to find that we were given 2 queens instead of the king that we had reserved. We also noticed that the rooms must have been poorly insulated as we could hear people in the room across the hall very loudly. The room was very nice and modern though and appeared to be clean. We then went to the front desk to see if we could get a king room like we had reserved to find that there was nobody tending to the front desk (concerning considering this was now right around the usual check-in time). As I was waiting at the front desk (there was no bell to ring) a man who we hadn't dealt with yet came and I explained the issue with the room. He claimed that I "probably didn't tell them I wanted a King" (I booked through the online booking system but ok?) But He'd find a room for us - I'll also mention that I got a very strong smell of alcohol when talking to him. He informed us they didn't have any king rooms ready but it should only be about 10 minutes. At this point we were pretty frustrated with the whole experience and we had no reason to believe a room would actually be ready in an acceptable amount of time, so we just decided to ask for a refund and drive back to the city. This might seem like an overreaction, but keep in mind the rate for our room was nearly $250/night! The most concerning part of the whole experience is that the guy we were dealing with at this point wasn't even the least bit concerned about the fact that we asked for a refund and decided not to stay there - almost as if this is a normal occurrence. All of these issues would have been a lot easier to stomach if this were a cheap $100/night hotel. But the fact is this hotel advertised itself as an upscale boutique hotel and the room rates reflect that. Unfortunately, the lack of services, the quality of the restaurant, and the lack of professionalism in general shine through and show that underneath all the nice renovations is still a cheap sleezy motel

The Lodge is on Dorothy Lake within Whiteshell Provincial Park. It is a great place. Nice surroundings and friendly staff. The service is great. They provide buffet meals for the 3 days we are here. Rooms are spacious and clean. There is swimming pool and exercise room too. It's cool when we are here so we don't go swimming in the lake. There are adjacent hiking trails. We see the odd bit of wildlife e.g. deer. I can really see this as being a popular spot for families either in the summer, or winter (likely would be great cross country skiing, and I would imagine snowmobiling.

On to the review: It's a secluded setting, peaceful, and quiet enough once the truck traffic dies down at night on the TCH. Nice accommodations, slightly iffy wireless, but the one problem I noticed is that the rooms are generally left open, including windows and floor vents. You'll want to close all of these when you arrive, but it means there are a few bugs in the room. Unfortunately, that takes away from an otherwise fine stop for the night. If you have trouble finding the woman to check in with, people are known to open a door to an empty room and leave a night's worth of money when they go. It's not like the city no one's going to take what's not theirs. A fine country alternative to heading as far west as Winnipeg.

We were grateful for a place to stay because we came into Kenora late and most of the places that we could afford were full. We took the last room in this "poorer relation" from the Travelodge. In general, it was good. Old and outdated, but clean. I liked that they had a full kitchen. We didn't need the oven, but the full fridge was nice to clean out our cooler and not play Tetris with those mini fridges. Decent location as well. The beds were fine, however the room was stuffy. Mind you it was very hot outside. If we were in Kenora again, I would probably not stay here and try somewhere else, but if you are "stuck" it is a fine solution.

The bathroom vanity looked new-ish and clean as did the tub/shower. Stairs - no elevator at the back where you park. Not sure if there is an elevator at the front. Cheap pet fee of 15$ and convenient location are the upsides.

In my opinion, this is likely one of the better hotels in the area, and it is a landmark as well at the waterfront, so I figured it may have a better standard than some of the others. Since I have never stayed anywhere else in Kenora, I am not sure if that is true. But I will talk about the good and the bad with my stay. The Bad ------------- There was two beds in the room, and when I sat on the first one, the springs were gone. I sunk like a stone, and the springs made a very loud protest. I crossed my fingers and thankfully when I sat on the second bed, it was perfectly fine. The shower had very little temperature control. When I had the shower's hot water tank cranked on high, it only came out warm. It wasnt cold and my showers were confortable, but I couldnt add more heat. Room service did not show up every day. Matter of fact, then showed up once. By showed up, they asked me in the hall on my way out for DINNER if I required service. I said yes. The other days -- no service at all. The Good -------------- The staff were very courteous. I ran into nothing but nice people. The pool is gorgeous. Its on the top floor of the hotel with a stunning view of the lake. The restaurant was very good (but pricey for Kenora). Regardless I ate there once, sometimes twice a day, because the food was consistently good, and the view of the lake was outstanding. The rate was fair. I paid $104 a night, which i thought was an awesome rate for the location.

I stayed here last weekend.. I rented a Cabin with 3 of my friends…read more.. The restaurant is quite cozy and the food tastes really good.. The waitress was super friendly.. The 2 guys who work in the store are also really friendly and very helpful. The cabins are clean and have private fire pits (not all of them do tho) I will come back for sure.
