Yesterday's visit to The Hudson reaffirmed how good the bar is in my eyes - it's such a jack of all trades - serves a whole host of different beers - I had the Sam Adams, something that you don't see too often in Belfast. My kids were happily distracted with colouring in their menus while the lovely waitress took time to ask them their order instead of just asking me. They were also very impressed with the mini milkshakes provide in small milk bottles, like I would have got in school - a nice touch. It was burgers all round and they did not disappoint, good taste and ample portion size. The kids of course leaving just enough room for ice cream. Jack Harley's is a great spot, but not the cheapest. However in this case you do get what you pay for. Even my wife who's not a big fan of burgers commented how nice it was. This is a barbaric Muslim tradition in which the animal suffers & is in pain & therefore is left alive for minutes and in agony while the blood drains from its carcass! The beauty of Belfast is that the buildings are big and traditional, that the bricks are all red and white and that the place looks like it has always looked. The problem of this is that on the very bottom of these beautiful buildings, someone has decided to ram in a KFC. A big, red, Kentucky style KFC right in the middle of a high-street which was usually fashionable. I am aware that many of these buildings are infact shops. But some, like Primark, still have the original look of the old Bank that used to be there. KFC have taken every consideration for what used to be here 200 years ago and then stuck a big red sign in the middle of it and thought "yee-haa who cares? you want a zinger burger tower deal box with beans that aren't even nice but you still get them anyway because you don't trust the gravy?" KFC is nice. It's a fact. But to stick one slap-bang on the main street looks tacky and totally out of keeping with what our forefathers and our five-fathers used to have there. Good food. There are kiosks to order if you do not want to wait in line to order with a cashier. I noticed there were a lot of young adults at this location, and that it was busy during both times I went. Service seems fast despite having a lot of customers inside. What I tried: -Terry's Chocolate Orange Pie is delicious. We don't have that in the United States. The pie is hot and crispy on the outside, and has a semi-sweet chocolate filling, similar to a pudding consistency, with an orange flavor. The overall taste of the pie is light, and not strong or too artificial tasting in either chocolate or orange. -Hamburger: The hamburger is very small and flat compared to the US, but tastes similar, just slightly healthier. -Cheese bites: Also a non-US item. These are tiny mozzarella and emmental balls in a smoky caramelized onion flavored breadcrumb coating. I thought the cheese would be gooey but it was somewhat solid (but warm). It's served with BBQ Dip. -Mini Hash Browns: Got this in the 15 piece instead of the 5 piece. I counted as I ate and there were 13 in there (oh well). I prefer the minis to the flat hash browns (we don't have the mini version in the US). The mini hash browns are crispy and perfect to pop in your mouth. -Sausage & Egg McMuffin: It was okay. The muffin top and bottom are very thin and the sandwich flavor isn't as salty compared to the US. -Breakfast Wrap with Brown Sauce: This is like a McMuffin but in a wrap. I prefer this since it's more filling as it comes with bacon and potato rosti (hashbrown) too. Brown sauce is hard to describe for me. It's not like a BBQ sauce, so it's not smokey or tangy, it's more spiced, sweet, tamarind-y, vinegary, like a cross of ketchup and Worchestshire sauce. The music was blasting at 8 a.m. so that's one way to wake yourself up. I went up to the second floor to eat. There's barstool seating along some windows, as well as grouped sit-down seating.
