Okay, so Southern Fried Chicken doesn't win many points for originality or creativity with its name, but it does make up for this with the general good quality of its food. Their chicken is, as you might expect, pretty tasty without excelling at the ancient art of chicken in batter too much, whilst their chips are pretty decent as fast food chips go. As well as chicken and chips, Southern Fried Chicken also sells burgers and pizzas which although makes the name somewhat misleading does give the menu a bit of variety. Their burgers are pretty well-cooked and priced but their pizzas aren't the best; quite why you'd go to a place that champions chicken so much when you want a pizza I'm not sure, but there you go.

There isnt a huge choice of things, its basically chicken with spicy rice or chips and you can get corn on the cobs etc. The chicken comes in different varieties, spicy, mild or lemon and herb and you can order anything from a portion to whole chickens. They have their famous Piri Piri sauces which are in bottles near the drinks dispenser which you can help yourself to to add a little extra spice to your meal. The soft drinks are reasonable as they include free refills but you do have to get up and get them yourself, kids like that though. Its ok for a cheap night out but not a place for an intimate meal.

My trips there have usually been after a night's drinking in my mate's house down the road and as it was the only place around that was open at that time for some quick scran, we would always head in here. I generally find all food is pretty good when you've had a skinful, but I've always been left more than a little disappointed when we've gone here. My main gripe with them is the quality of their chips. Their portions are generally quite small and the chips themselves are either too crispy or you end up with big massive round ones that haven't even been cut up properly before being put in the fryer. They have the usual accompaniments (pies, sausages, fish) on offer as well but it's just generally all a bit crap. They do offer several Chinese dishes which could very well be delicious but to be honest, I've never risked going for any of them because if they can't even get chips right, then what's the point?

As it is, Southport's Spoilt for Choice doesn't look much like the Crosby version, with the shop front sporting a dark and sleek design. Inside the shop is quite small in size, but this doesn't hold too many problems as there is a small seating area for customers to eat their sandwiches if they're not in a rush to eat somewhere else. Selection wise, the sandwich fillings on offer are varied and they do the usual fillings you'd expect from a sandwich shop like this, such as tuna mayo or roast chicken as well as more adventurous ones like sweet chilli chicken and a very succulent Canadian steak sandwich, which I highly recommend. Interestingly, Spoilt for Choice also has a café next door in which customers can sit down for a hot drink or a sandwich in the comfort of a sophisticated and contemporary seating area. The café part of Spoilt for Choice adds an interesting twist to your standard sandwich shop and its location over the road from the train station means you can grab a sandwich before a train journey.

It's not haute but if you like sticky and aromatic dishes with chicken that slides apart or beef with a little chew to it then there's definitely nowhere better in Formby. Unfortunately it doesn't tend to be open very late, which is a shame really - it could do well mopping up the stragglers coming out of nearby Grapes pub at closing time.

Thankfully in Southport you're spoiled for choice and Dolphin is one of the best chippies in the vicinity. It's not just a chippy though. It's an actual restaurant, which might take away from the takeaway feel (do you see what I did there?) but you can still get your tucker all wrapped up in paper to sit on the promenade with so it shouldn't make a difference. If you do go for the dining in option, you'll be treated to excellent service as well as friendly banter and a choice of cod, haddock, fillet, plaice, scampi or fishcake or perhaps a pie, burger, sausage, egg... anything you'd find in your regular greasy spoon but neither greasy nor cheap-tasting. You can also get traditional dishes like gammon and pineapple, roast beef or chicken, lamb or turkey, boiled ham or a salad for prices between around a fiver and £7.25. At this place prices really are cheap as chips. Puds include apple pie, banana split, gateaux or knickerbocker glory and it's all very quintessentially British. As you can imagine with a menu like this it's a great place to take the elders, and aptly enough there's a special senior citizen's menu. Very Southport, very English and very cute.
