Austin City Limits Radio! It takes a lot of work to be the ACL sponsored radio station in the live music capital of the world. These guys do a good job of spinnin' those discs and jamming those vinyl records. Being that they're an Austin City Limits radio station, that doesn't limit them to one genre of music. ACL music series- the show, and the concert series have had music all over the map. So if you say that you're an ACL radio station, you can really get away with playing just about anything, there's gotta be some way that every major artist is somehow associated with either the show or the concert series. If you don't like the genre of music, just like the weather in Texas, just give it a few minutes, and it'll change. I do get sick of the number of commercials that these guys play. read more

This is my favorite radio station anywhere I think. It reminds me a bit of KFAT in Gilroy years ago (now KPIG in Santa Cruz/SF) in that you might hear anything at anytime. Well, not 'anything' since they don't play most of the crap that I avoid elsewhere. I have a couple of CD compilations from them that I play the hell out of. I'm too far away to hear it on a regular basis anymore but whenever I beg, borrow or steal my way to Austin, I'm all ears. read more

When I moved to Austin almost 6 years ago, one of the bonuses was that I got to listen to KGSR. I firmly fit within their local-music geezer demographic. Whenever I drove to Houston or Dallas I was always glad when I got back within listening distance of KGSR. Coming back from a long trip up north I could again receive KGSR somewhere this side of Waco. What happened to it? It sounded like any generic radio station and drove me to plug my iPhone back into the truck stereo. The KGSR Broadcasts CDs still sounded great, but the live radio was just pathetic. Sorry, KGSR, but your recent changes have left me behind. Now i've returned to listing to my previously second-favorite station, WMVY from Martha's Vineyard, which now includes more Texa-centric music than you, including Alejandro Escovedo, Bob Schneider and Patty Griffin. read more

This is what all radio stations should be like. They play everything....... no matter what artist, or album, or track, they'll play it on KGSR. This morning I came to work listening to Van Morrison, the latest Death Cab for Cutie, The Beatles, Lyle Lovett and Paul Simon. It's almost like listening to my iPod. The downside? I get a little tired of the local artists, and the Texas songs (a lot of songs about Texas).... while I support the local artists, I wish they would mix it in better. It having been a long time since I was in college (as an undergraduate) I forgot how much KGSR rocked the airwaves. Not until I drove thru to visit my parents during my cross-country move from Miami to San Jose did I get a chance to tune back into this broadcasting oasis for a day and a half. Had I been driving in the opposite direction, I might have rated KGSR at a mere four stars, though i doubt it. Actually, thinking back, I know not. As good as KFOG and other Bay Area stations are, there is no music that compares to Texas Rock. For those of you reading from other states, know that Texas has its own kind of music. Just like it has its own cuisine, mountains, gulf, plains, longhorns, and was its own country. Everything Texas does is its own, and Austin and KGSR live up to this reputation as being pretty much the best radio station without any BS (Texans know BS when they see it, right before they kick it in the mouth with their boots. Great non-Clearchannel station that truly sounds like Austin. Great selection of Texas artists and a really eclectic play list. Any station that plays John Lee Hooker next to Alejandro Escovedo is alright in my book. read more

What's that channel called? KGSU? KSRS? KGLU? It's none of my business if you can't remember the channel's name but make sure you remember the frequency, it is 107.1FM! It was like "love at first hear" with KGSR. It plays variety of genres and it is always a surprise to hear what's playing next. I heard a lot about the CD compilation and I've got to get myself a copy before it got sold out. Live studio performance is great and don't forget about the "Star Track" segment at night. The first time I visited Austin, I was trolling the FM band for something to listen to. I happened on a station playing Alison Krauss, at which point my wife said "THERE!" so I left it and listened a while. They followed with Stevie Ray, Jack Johnson and a couple of others that were loaded in my MP3 player. Well, long story short, where I live in South Texas there isn't a single radio station worth an armadillo's rectum. If I'm home I stream KGSR on my computer and wish I could pick it up on the radio. KGSR is like my morning coffee, I can't start my day without it. This is my primary source for hearing about lots of local events. and usually are the first to talk about rumored acts to participate in ACL/SXSW. Also, this is a typical sampling of music I will hear in my host drive to work: the Shins, Paul Simon, Elvis Costello, Lyle Lovett, Death Cab for Cutie, Wilco. KGSR is the best radio station in Waco. It's a little fuzzy and goes away on the north side of town, but compared to all of the uber-commercial crapola that Waco has, even fuzzy KGSR was a breath of fresh air. The only bad part about this is that sometimes my reception in central Austin sounds about like it did in Waco. I love the huge area you cover, but you're an Austin-based radio station! Fix your reception IN AUSTIN. I like most of the music that KGSR plays and that most of their time is spent on music and not chat--*shoots evil glare at 101X*. Lately, though, I've noticed more of a swing towards being a general "adult contemporary" station that makes me sad. C'mon, I tuned in here because you featured many regional/indie artists on the airwaves, and I'm not going to stick around if you insist on playing KT Tunstall or Matchbox-20 for the 42nd time today. Who doesn't like KGSR? I've always called it K-Geezer for fun. This is the station that says "format, schmormat". You can hear Lucinda Williams, then Buddy Holly, then Coldplay. I really can't stand Coldplay, but I use them to make a point. A lot of variety here. During SXSW, they broadcast live performances, many of which are at the Four Seasons hotel in the morning. They use the recordings from those performances and other live studio appearances for an annual CD compilation which benefits they SIMS Foundation. read more

After listening to-best-radio-station-in-the-world KCRW in Los Angeles for five years, I really don't find a lot of variety in comparison. SURE, they DO have the most awesome assortment of in-studio acts around, with a solid compilation cd to prove it, but I get more alt-country, Americana and folk - understandable, given that's the Austin sound - that offers little new sound to embrace. Would love them to push the envelope more. read more

What happened? The station fired most of it's original staff and lost all it's charm. Austin is a town with educated ears. What ever possessed the new owners to scrap what was one of the best radio stations in the USA? it was a sad sad day when they changed stations and formats to formulated adult alternative. read more

K-geezer is the commercial radio station that recognizes commerce as a local community based issue. With plenty of live music on air and lots of local bands on the up and up, It can be really exciting to listen to. indeed the mark of any indie star's success is airtime on KGSR. I do however have a serious issue with this station that claims to "sound like Austin": In a city known for its diverse multitude of bands and songs, why the crap do you play the same few "indie" songs time and time again until I've gotten sick of people I had never heard of. I loved KT Tunstall until I heard "Suddenly I See" 20 some odd times in a week. Come on guys reflect the real city and play a little of everything. I know you can. read more

KGSR, why must our love affair be such a conflicted one? When I first heard you when I moved to Austin, I dug the sound. You were usually tuned in on my radio dial. I liked that you didn't yap too much -- I like to keep the conversation to a minimum, too. I thought you were pretty diverse and that was attractive to me. I never knew what would come out of you next. My love deepened for you when you rewarded me with tickets to ACL Fest just for caring enough to be the 7th person to call you. For these reasons, and because you play songs when I call and request them, I thought we could be car companions on a semi-permanent basis. I mean, I'd like to still play the field some and see what's out there for me, but I'll probably be coming home to you. But I'm troubled. See, I don't know what this thing you have with Norah Jones is. Do you really need to devote roughly 15.4 minutes EVERY hour to her musical stylings? I like her too, but just how much Norah Jones can one person take? I tried to be patient, but your apparent obsession with NJ has turned me off from her and, honestly, it makes my fingers wander on the dial. There. I said it. I still have a great affinity for you, KGSR, but if you continue carrying on with NJ like you have, I may be forced to get my musical needs fulfilled elsewhere. I'm sorry. It's not you, it's me. A good station gone commercial. The attachment to Austin is fading as they intorduce old R&B and stadium rock tunes and ignore home grown talent deserving of airplay. Difficult for corporate types who don't live here to understand how a station with a non-standardized playlist and local programming can succeed. read more

If you want to hear music by the artist playing live in Austin, listen to KGSR. What happened to KGSR???? I lived in Austin for 5 years and it was the only station I listened to. I moved about 5 years ago and whenever I go to Austin, I can't wait to put it on KGSR when I'm there. The last two trips, when I get in range and put it on, I think I'm on the wrong station! There's hip-hop songs and music that is just not something KGSR would play. Then I read that it's format has changed. Wow! What a disappointment. I'm no longer interested in their yearly album if they're gonna play crap like that. So disappointed!!! :( read more

This station sucks. Apparently it was good back in the day, and I used to enjoy their evening show, but ever since Andy Langer has been on the show I've hardly been able to stand it. It's not good. His voice is just very irritating - it drives me freakin crazy and he is supposed to be innovative with his "wild cards" but he is just a follower. And Jody Denvurg is equally annoying. I have been here twice now for some of their lunch concerts that I have won tickets for. They always provide some yummy lunch, are very kind to the audience, and really try to stick to the timed agenda as best as they can. Wow what a big change for the worse. Live in SA and used to stream it on my laptop, now I use my i device on my stereo. The music is so different now, sounds a lot like the channel my teenage kids listen to. After so many years of listening, what a drag that they changed, guess it was inevitable. read more

I used to love this station. The music was great & distinctly Austin, the advertising was limited and kid appropriate and the DJ's were well versed in music. Now KGSR sounds like every other station in any other city. read more
