They have an area for main service as well as rooms for children's ministry. I loved seeing that the congregation hangs out and gathers after service in their courtyard. This parish is was our home away from our mainland home. We felt very welcomed even with our rambunctious kids. The kids choir was quite pleasant, the wooden sculptures were beautiful and a wonderful homily. Plenty of parking and bathrooms just outside the parish. We stayed for a bit after to check out the gift shop and my wife had the pleasure of speaking with one of the priest who was from California originally and said this is now his home and how he loves the community. Since church life is so very contextual, let me simply give some indicators so folks will know if this is the place for them. In general, this is an older congregation that has a family feel to it. The service is in both Hawaiian and English and runs a little over an hour. The liturgy us pretty traditional with organ, piano, and an occasional other special music. Theologically, this is a United Church of Christ congregation so will tend to be more progressive when it comes to women, LGBTQ folks, immigration, etc. They are not scared to talk about how our faith impacts social life -- a faith that some may deem "political" and would rather the church not talk about social issues. The pastor is friendly, welcoming, and clearly loved by the church. We have found the messages inspiring, challenging, and hopeful. This church is not one of those contemporary band-driven congregations, so if that's what you are looking for, this may not be the place for you.

Sunday 10am Mass with Father Ephrem and a beautiful choir…read more 6th Sunday of Easter Visiting from California and hubby and I celebrated Mass here. Projectors on wall show the words for all songs and the readings as well. Homily was thoughtful and shared with passion and enthusiasm. Announcement was made that people could sit, kneel, or stand at appropriate times and all would be well. Pews and kneelers are old and a bit squeaky. After Mass a beautiful tradition was shared. People celebrating a birthday are called forward and given a lei. The congregation then sings Happy Birthday to them. Couples celebrating an Anniversary are called forward and given a lei. Father asked them how many years they were celebrating and then the congregation clapped. Prayers were also offered for all. Lastly, all visitors to the church were welcomed to come forward and given a lei as well. There were at least 40 people visiting on this day! The parishioners seated in the pews smiled at us and welcomed us which was so heartwarming.

A little bit of Hawaiian history hidden in Kihei…read more Lovely spot to visit for anyone, not just the observant. "The Church by the Sea" is an open air church built in 1853, and was the first in all of Hawaii to have a Hawaiian ordained minister. Strangely this seems to be a quiet feature; I found the commemorating plaque hidden behind some half-alive potted plants. There's a small cemetery, and a simple but charming outdoor walk for the 14 Stations of the Cross. It's quiet, green and contemplative. Might be a nice place to attend a morning service, in the splendour of Creation. Certainly better than any crazy megachurch that looks more like a gaudy car dealership than a place of worship.
