The longtime keeper of the Maui Fish Pond is Uncle Kimokeo, he is a life long Maui resident who has dedicated himself to preserving the Fish Pond for future generations. You see the Fish Pond was built in the 1600's to create a safe haven for the local fish to spawn and grow. Uncle Kimokeo has maintained the Fish Pond walls using stone high atop Haleakala rebuilding the wall stone by stone. Uncle Kimokeo says he's is entrusted to preserve the Pond and the culture. To listen to him explain all the cultural lore was amazing. He took us out on a Double hull Canoe north and basically had the whole boats singing and chanting Hawaiian songs giving thanks for the permission on the water. The Maui Fish Pond takes out groups daily by appointment for a donation 69.00, consider your donation as a write off as the foundation is a non profit corp. these monies supports all of the upkeep, programs and Youth programs the foundations supports. Feeding the goats was extra special. And those adorable "kids"! Best part of the visit is purchasing a flight (or two) of the cheeses. Added bonus was the fabulous samples of 2 cheeses and a truffle. We had visited once before back in 2012 and remembered it being a great experience, and it's nice to see how much the farm has upgraded since then. They offer goat and cheese tours that you can sign up for online. This time, we just wandered around the grounds and relaxed while watching the goats and baby kids play in their pen. We also bought a $10 bucket of hay to feed the goats off to the side. We were told they were under a year old, though they were already pretty much adult-sized! They were extremely enthusiastic about the hay, and the bucket was gone in no time. It was such a fun and wholesome experience, for both me and the goats. Definitely a cute stop, and I hope to come back next time and sign up for one of the tours next time in Maui.

Beach territory on Maui's Southwest shores…read more I honestly cannot remember any distinguishing feature about Kihei as I can about Lahaina. Kihei has more residential and commercial areas and better beaches. We stayed in Kihei at the WorldMark Resort and it was only a few minutes walk to one of the three Kamaole beaches across the street. I like that it's not very far from Wailea and Makena and a shorter distance to traveling the famous Road to Hana. I dunno, for some reason we found ourselves returning back to our resort early every day... like 7:00p or around 8:00p at the latest which is why we found ourselves returning to Lahaina often just to hang around and eat, window shop... eat (again). Nightlife seems to be more fun there. Plus the first Ululani Shave Ice is in Lahaina located in an open-air stand, set back from the street a few steps in a courtyard, at 790 Front Street. This was our first trip to Maui and now that we've done most of the touristy things if there is another chance we return to the Valley Isle I'd prefer to stay in Lahaina. Kihei is the sunniest, driest end of the island and a little rain can mean intense flooding... during our stay in Kihei it did just that! Locals we've talked to said it's not often they get heavy rains on this part of the island but the isolated downpour on 9/9/22 was too much for Kihei resulting in flooded roads and causing closures. I was super bummed about this because we were supposed to drive up to Haleakalā National Park to watch the sunset and see the full moon. We circled the crater and moored in the 1st spot where the sea life was vibrant. Perfect amount of time to see everything and get out before too many other tour companies arrived. The ride back was fun, with a couple thrilling circles to kick up some wake. Laid back and friendly crew. Highly recommend unless you can't handle the ocean and prefer something more chill.

Road to Hana is a unique experience that involves driving down a long road (most likely from the…read morenorth side of Maui) down to the town of Hana. Along the way there are a variety of attractions like lush rainforests, waterfalls, hiking areas, and beaches. There are many so you'll have to do your research to find the ones you want to stop at. You will usually drive down the road, stop briefly for the attractions, then get back on the road to the next one. There were many windy and narrow roads and the driving isn't for the faint of heart. Some of the bridges are one lane so you'll have to constantly keep an eye out for cars around corners. I personally wouldn't drive at night and you really have to ensure you don't veer onto the other lane. Driving at slow speeds is a must and requires a lot of concentration. One of the other notable attractions that the road has to offer are the plentiful banana bread shops. We went to Aunty Sandy's Banana Bread which was delicious. It was pretty cool and I'm glad I got to check it out but I wouldn't do it again.
