Kilimanjaro has a great brunch menu. It's not huge but it has some really imaginative options alongside the breakfast classics like granola and eggs benny. I was really tempted by the full cooked breakfast with haggis but in an effort to be more paleo I opted for the courgette fritters with poached eggs, bacon, feta, avocado and onion jam. The courgette fritters were really tasty and all the components of the dish worked really well together. The portions were huge so it was definitely good value for money. Atmosphere was nice and relaxed. My only complaint is that the tables were a bit small for two people to have such big breakfasts. read more

I've stopped by here on a few lunchtimes, the panini's are very nice, my favourite probably being the bacon, brie and cranberry! I don't like coffee but im told its pretty good, but they also have a good selection of teas/smoothies/juices. Not the cheapest place but the prices are reasonable. My second-favourite place in Edinburgh for a coffee. Cappucino is the "must-drink" - the froth here is just so much better than I can ever make it, and of course it comes with exceptionally delicate "latte art" just to increase my sense of barista inadequacy still further. There are only a small handful of coffee shops in Edinburgh where they take the care to deliver properly and patiently extracted espresso with milk stretched to 55-65 degrees (when it is at it's sweetest). This place is one, and it marvels in this regard while avoiding the pretentious nature of some of it's counterparts. The staff have always been very nice when I have been in and never seem to compromise on the standard or presentation of the food or beverages that leave the bar, even when the place is ridiculously busy. Well worth a look if you're in that part of Edinburgh. My personal recommendation is a flat white and a slice of brownie, that I am assured is made in-store. They apparently also bake their own scones daily but they always seem to be sold out when I visit. read more

My boyfriend took me here as he likes the food. The food is good but the coffee is pretty horrible. I am a coffee snob and drink Americanos. This brand is very bitter and has an unpleasant after taste. I've tasted it elsewhere before in Edinburgh and don't know the brand. But it's not good. It's a nice place if you can get near the window or the sofa. But if it wasn't for my boyfriend, I would never be back. The majority of the staff we are served by act like they are too intellectual and aloof to be serving people. Unhelpful and po-faced. Sweet spot for brunch/lunch/coffee! Everything on the menu is expertly prepared from excellent ingredients. The sandwich options are all too tempting; it's so difficult to choose. I love the chicken and brie with cranberry! Kilimanjaro also offers the freshest smoothies and juices for a good price. I have yet to try the pastries, although they look quite delicious. Compared to other coffee shops in the area, Kilimanjaro has much heartier portions (which is great for students on a budget). A definite "cannot-miss." read more

I like my coffee. In fact, I don't feel right until I've had it in the morning and this place and sometimes we all need a bit of pep in the afternoon and I've gotten mine from Kilimanjaro numerous times. This is quite a cool and quirky place that is filled with students and workers alike. Inside there's a cracking sofa that I've sat and caught up with life on and even Yelped from! My only grump might be that it's a little expensive. However, Kilimanjaro makes up for it with their brilliant selection of coffees, teas, soups and of course, my personal favourite, their cake selection. Apparently this little coffee house has been listed as one of the best in the country too! I've been here a couple times, and I'm definitely a fan. A nice selection of cakes - I've gone for the scone, they usually have a choice of scone and jam which is nice, and clotted cream as a bonus. They don't warm the scones, but still delicious. The chai latte is a winner, and I've also tried the veggie breakfast which was very good - veggie sausages can be a bit iffy, but I had no complaints about these. A very pleasant cafe! Some other notes - it's been busy whenever I've gone, but I haven't had trouble finding a table for two or three people; it's a favourite with many of my friends, one of whom regularly goes here to study; I believe that they do take-away for some of their menu items, not all; you order and pay at the till, and then they bring the food to you; they have loyalty cards, both for drinks and sandwiches - I have one, so another reason to visit again! read more

If you live on the southern end of Nicolson St, this feels like the first burst of civilization before South Bridge. I was quite impressed with the friendliness of the barista last time I was here, which was last Wednesday night. He really went out of his way to make sure we got our coffees in a timely manner, and he bid my two friends and I a pleasant farewell when we left. Since I'm accustomed to getting summarily ignored by baristas in Edinburgh, I was rather taken aback by this, but maybe it was simply because he found one of my friends to be particularly attractive.) They use the same fresh 'square mile' beans and serve the same genius coffee as others owned by Jonathan Sharp (press, wellington, project coffee). With kilimanjaro you get the fab coffee with more of the relaxed hub bub of Nicholson street in contrast to the suit meets designer gear of George street (which is still fab!) of wellington. read more

I've heard fond words about this place and was eager to try its coffee. Choosing the 'long black' I was content with the result but not blown away. Sure, it's a great alternative to Starbucks but not a place I would religiously choose again and again. I suppose it all depends on whether you have a passion for coffee or not. I might have been staying half an hours' walk away in the New Town, but when I wanted actual, drinkable, enjoyable coffee during last years' Edinburgh Fringe, this was the only place to go. As someone who bought, drank half of and then disposed of about 60 god-awful-why-can't-Edinburgh-get-some-bloody-baristas coffees during the month of August 2012, I ended up making this pilgrimage across the city quite a few times. The coffee this wonderful little place is widely regarded by those in the know to be the very best in Edinburgh. If not Scotland. If not the UK. If not the world... OK, that's going a bit too far. But only a bit. And I'm not saying this just because they put lovely pretty patterns on top. It's not just the coffee either, the food is good and the soup is always delicious and imaginative - cheese and potato and a glorious thai chicken are my favourites so far. If you don't like coffee, never fear! There are lots of alternatives: the best, in my view, being the apple and strawberry juice. Yum! The staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is great - helped along by the bookshelf of old books that customers are welcome to borrow while they drink their coffee. Comfy chairs too. And warm. Kilimanjaro is one of the most relaxed and informal places you could ever meet someone in. I love this place soooo much, I meet my friends for coffee, lunch and general meets, it is in such a location that it is easy to locate and meet someone, especially for the first time, as I have often done. They have recently moved from their location, to a bigger and brighter location, a few doors away from the Tesco metro on Nicholson street,I was very impressed with the move, as, although they moved to bigger and brighter premises, they never altered their beliefs or standing in the community. They still play the ecclectic mix of french'afro, carribbean mix of music and artwork. The staff could not be any friendlier if you paid them, it is such a great place to be and relax in, and OH by the way, they have wee tickets which they stamp, so if you buy four cups of coffee, you get the fifth free.(for example). I would highly reccomend this place for all you guys that want to meet for a coffee, have a chat, have lunch, or whatever. I support these guys all the way, and am right behind them. I'm not a coffee drinker so I can't tell you whether my friends are right about this place having excellent coffee (all coffee tastes awful to me). However, this is one of my favourite places in Edinburgh to eat out for lunch. My love for it began when I went along there somewhat hungover last year with my flatmate and order the chilli chicken and mozzarella panini with a smoothie. It was heavenly! One of the best paninis I've had and a delicious smoothie. I also loved the salad accompaniment as the salad dressing was so yummy. The thing that stops me from going here too often is the price however. It cost over £3 for my panini. I guess this is what you have to pay for such good quality, yummy food. This place is a comfortable and cosy when it's not too busy. Last time I was lucky to get a sofa and couch with my friend which was lovely. There's a selection of daily newspapers to read and the staff seem rather friendly. On top of that, students can get a card which offers them a stamp deal on coffee. This is a great little cafe. A favourite for lunch and only my lack of finances stops me from awarding it more stars. read more

After a Sunday of hillwalking and second hand book shopping, we decided it would be nice to spend our evening drinking a cup of tea in a nice coffee shop. Unfortunately a lot of places in Edinburgh close at 5pm on a Sunday. Lucky then that we stumbled upon Kilimanjaro! We got some lovely tea and managed to bag the couch, which was uber comfy. The staff were very friendly and did not try to rush us or anything. We ended up spending a good few hours relaxing, chatting, and just having a lovely time over some lovely beverages. It was pretty busy, but I guess that's just testament to it's awesomeness. Will definitely be back. read more

Visited this place with a friend recently. It had moved. Still on Nicholson Street, but a few doors closer to the city. The atmosphere was very chilled and the staff friendly. Their coffees were made with great attention and didn't disappoint. I had visited this place about a year ago and had been disappointed. Maybe it was me. A cute little coffee shop on Nicolson Street. There are not too many tables in there so it can be quite hard to get a seat if it's busy, it can also make it feel a little cramped inside. It is a lovely place to get a space on a sofa and read your book. They serve tea, coffee and hot chocolate, and also soup and paninis and lovely cakes. Every time you buy a drink you get a stamp on a Kilimanjaro card so that after you buy enough beverages, you can get a free drink of your choice. The staff are really friendly and the toilets are kept clean and tidy. I think this is a lovely alternative to the chain coffee shops, I really think this is a little place with some atmosphere and somewhere that is a little different. read more

This is a lovely little coffee shop that also serves foods such as panini and soup and a selection of non-coffee drinks such as milkshakes and smoothies. They serve the best coffee I have ever tasted and the atmosphere is very relaxing. The recent move has allowed more space to sit inside but it is still quite small. It would be very easy to walk past as it is tucked in between the charity shops along newington road but I suggest you pop in an give it try. The coffee is also fair-trade. read more

Lovely coffee shop on Newington Road, Edinburgh. Like others, I'm not a coffee fan so cannot comment on the taste but they put al whole lot of effort into making it. They always have at least 4 home made soups on every day (the chick pea, spinach and lentil daahl is devine) and THE HOME MADE SCONES ARE AMAZING!!! Cannot believe no one has mentioned them. Ask for them to be warmed up and they're just like mum used to make, served with butter and jam. Would not be afraid to recommend this place to anyone. I live and work within minutes of this place. I want to love it, I really do, as the coffee is delicious (when made correctly). But the staff are appalling. I have lost count of the number of times I' ve sworn never to go back. Today was the last straw. I shouldn't have to explain my order - a very simple black coffee, skimmed latte and a soup - FIVE TIMES, only then to be given the wrong coffee at the end. I watched the barista pour full-fat milk in to my coffee, when I'd clearly asked for skimmed, then checked again when she handed ti to me that it was skimmed. She lied and said yes, handing me the coffee. I then enquired as to where my soup was, and she told me I'd never ordered one, despite having PAID FOR IT. Am sorry if this sounds like a rant, but staff turnover in this place is SO HIGH that there must be something odd going on. You don't employ that many new staff a month unless there is a problem.... Advice to the owner: hire staff who care about customer service. Then you might get some local custom back. read more
