After spending loads of money to host Queen Victoria at the time, the owners went into financial decline, leading to changes in ownership, and eventual gifting to the Irish Nation in 1932. Our tour group recently visited this popular (and well-maintained) tourist destination that features period rooms, expansive gardens, and traditional farms. We spent most of our time at the mansion, of which the self-guided tour was well laid out and very interesting to learn about. It's all kind of Downtown Abbey-ish, with the basement servant's work areas were fascinating. There's also a craft center at the end of the tour that's worth a look. The grounds (with Lake views) add to the relative magic to this place.

They offer a pamphlet that you can read as you go through the house which describes the room, furniture and sometimes interesting history. There is even a Queen's room that was put together for the Queen's visit. The basement level was really interesting. It offers quite a glimpse of life below for the servants. If you loved Downton Abbey you will likely feel it coming to life in this home. The grounds are absolutely stunning. You could spend an hour or half a day here.

We were on a CIE Tour of Scotland and Ireland and the Kissane Sheep Farm was part of our itinerary. It was truly fascinating watching them use the border collies to herd sheep. All of the communication with the dogs was non-verbal and consisted primarily of whistles. The dogs responded to these non-verbal commands and were quite proficient at herding the sheep. After watching the dogs, we then moved inside one of the barns for a demonstration of sheep shearing. One man narrated the demo and explained the process of how the sheep are sheared and when is the best time of year to shear the sheep. The other man did an amazing job of completely shearing a sheep in a matter of minutes - with the coat coming off in 1 large piece. This offered a great look at the local culture.

Visiting is easy with lots of free parking. The park itself is free but to tour inside the house or traditional farm there is a small fee. The house tour is self-guided and quick, easy and interesting. On our visit in early June in the afternoon it wasn't too busy-didn't feel crowded at all. Be sure also to check out the "sunken garden" with its tree roses.

I stopped multiple people asking if it was the left path or the right path the sign was indicating. Especially confusing when there was a Y in the road. There isn't a enter here sign at the house. You just buy your ticket and wander around outside and hopefully see an open door and realize that's where you're supposed to enter. I went to the Abbey. There was no sign on the pathway, pointing to where the Abbey was hidden in the woods. I very easily could've missed the path. When I left the Abbey, there was no signage to tell me which direction took me back towards the farm, or directed me toward the roadway, where I was to catch a hop on hop off tour bus. I found the lack of proper signage very aggravating..

If the fully lit exterior doesn't draw you in, then the open doors, live music and pure energy is sure to! A combination of all three got us, and it was a glorious time! The bar is classic in all ways from layout, decor, live music, drink options, service, etc...a true local Irish pub that is welcoming, loud and fun. We were in Killarney for a few days and each evening walked by and this place stays packed, which initial was something we were not excited about, but we figured "why not!". The evening we wandered in, it was again packed, but everyone was moving and shaking to allow folks an opportunity grab a drink at the bar. There was also live acoustic music, which was great to stay and enjoy. We grabbed a pint, found a corner and just enjoyed the vibes...and of course the Guinness. We visited pubs all around Ireland on our trip and The Grand was one of the more memorable spots. Do not be deterred by the crowds, its packed for good reason!
