This now bi-monthly event isn't so secret nowadays, some months it's full very quickly after opening at 8pm. The venue is chock full of classic social club delights: chintzy paintings of her Maj on the walls, brilliant prices at the bar and friendly folk make this a low maintenance wee treasure of a place. A mere hop across the road from Crossmyloof station and located right off the motorway/Kilmarnock road it's super easy to find and well worth seeking out.

I was amazed to read that the architect forgot to include a staircase on his drawings and one had to be constructed quickly a narrow winding staircase just in time for the official opening!! It has had many uses over the years, including being used by the council as a place for the homeless to stay and a shelter for single parents. There's a very small car park opposite where you can park for free, as I did yesterday, (in the 'Main Street Car Park') next to the former parish council chambers and old gaol.

Opposite Glasgow Cathedral and St. Mungo Museum, you can make a day of it going down this way. There's some interesting medieval history to be consumed in here, and you usually have the place to yourself to get immersed in it without hassle. If you are on the tall side, you might have to watch your head! Seemingly people weren't so tall back in the 1400's. A recommended cultural highlight that could easily be missed.

I have visited the Provan's Lordship, the oldest house in Glasgow, several times, both as part of a…read moreschool trip, and on my own initiative. It was built in 1471 and is the only remaining building from medieval Glasgow. Inside there is a lot to be learned about life at the time, with several eerie glassy-eyed mannequins to illustrate what the inhabitants might have looked like. The thickness of the walls and the low ceilings are interesting features of the time. It's easy to walk past, with just a couple of modest signs proclaiming the history of the place. In my experience it's rarely busy, except of course if a school trip has just descended on the place. Most of the children don't have a lot of respect for the history, climbing all over the furniture and shrieking hysterically at the mannequins. Admission is free, so I would definitely recommend taking time out to make a visit if you have even a passing interest in history.

Well, it was part of the Scottish Refugee Week and one of our choir members was working at the event and invited The Arches Community Choir to come along to do a wee performance. When I arrived I found out it was the Scottish Music Centre. I've probably walked by here many times and not really paid attention to be honest. It's a lovely modern area just on your left when you enter the main entrance of the City Halls. So technically it was the City Halls but SMC is situated within the City Halls. Ahhh.. makes sense now?! I was kind of pleased as I was a bit worried we were performing to a huge audience. The Scottish Refugee Week event was called the Human "Music" Library which featured people as human books. So you could spend time talking to them about their music from around the world. They had set up stations around the centre allowing you to sit down with the musician and they would explain their type of music and how they play or sing. It was set out like a big livingroom and they had put on nibbles and drinks. Later on after the chats they set up a space allowing the musicians to perform. It was a great variety of music and made not a bad wee venue. Although when it came to us performing we did take up quite a lot of room, so we squished in and performed some of our classics, which went down well. It was a great day and I would go back to SMC for another event or just to have a wee nosey.

How excellent is that?! It has helped a number of my friends with promotions and music recordings in the past couple of years - I think that if you're a Glasgow musician, you should head down and have a chat with these guys. They most definitely know what they're doing!

Originally a social club for RAF veterans, it picked up a hip audience through the occasional DJ night. The incongruity of the venue- working man's club, good range of beers at a cheap price, long bar space that doubled as a dance floor- added to the charm, and it quickly become a centre for the more off-centre event: I saw a Kate Bush tribute night here, surrounded by fans who had dressed up specially as Bush, or in a fancy dress interpretation of Bush's songs. It isn't one for a casual visit: most of the time, the veterans are using it, but anything that happens here in the way of clubs is worth a visit.

While taking in a football match here last year, my friend's request for a lager with a dash of lemonade was greeted with a level of disdain usually reserved for inappropriate declarations of breaking of wind or blocking of toilets. The set up is all very Phoenix Nights, snooker (20p a game), puggies, function hire and a truly immaculate bowling green, with the walls adorned with the names of previous club champions. It's a very serious business here indeed and giggling at some of the names or even making light of the number of bowling tournaments is not appreciated. Quite simply, you are in someone else's territory so you either like what they have created, which to all extents and purposes is a perfectly fine no-thrills pub, or get out. You must be a member (usually reserved for shipyard workers) or know a member, to gain entry which means you're unlikely to encounter anyone under the age of 50. In other words, I could give this place one star accompanied by the review from hell and it would matter not a jot. After all, the likelihood of any of the regulars having heard of Yelp, let alone checking it on a regular basis, is on a par with the chances of them asking for an umbrella in their pint of Tennent's.

Today, the house and its gardens are open to the public and it's such a wonderful place to explore. I was in a production of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" here a few years ago and I've since seen a few other plays performed here too. The idyllic gardens are great for outdoor performances and add a little bit of magic!

These guys seriously love what they do, and it shows…read more This show home designed with ostentatious glee for a paper merchant by Glasgow's long underrated architect Alexander Thomson has been painstakingly put back together, showcasing the original wit and whimsy of Thomson that had been painted over and removed after several ownership changes. Tucked away in Cathcart, this is an easy sojourn from the city and worth a look in to get a good idea of Glasgow's "other" architect. The staff are as ever attentive and knowledgeable. There's a small cafe but it's not particularly atmospheric...better to visit and get your cuppa elsewhere.
