It takes a bit of local knowledge to find this stand alone building just off Anniesland Cross but perhaps, for many, ignorance is bliss. Let's put it this way, Yarrow Recreation Club is not a spot for a first date.
While taking in a football match here last year, my friend's request for a lager with a dash of lemonade was greeted with a level of disdain usually reserved for inappropriate declarations of breaking of wind or blocking of toilets.
The set up is all very Phoenix Nights, snooker (20p a game), puggies, function hire and a truly immaculate bowling green, with the walls adorned with the names of previous club champions. It's a very serious business here indeed and giggling at some of the names or even making light of the number of bowling tournaments is not appreciated.
Quite simply, you are in someone else's territory so you either like what they have created, which to all extents and purposes is a perfectly fine no-thrills pub, or get out.
You must be a member (usually reserved for shipyard workers) or know a member, to gain entry which means you're unlikely to encounter anyone under the age of 50.
In other words, I could give this place one star accompanied by the review from hell and it would matter not a jot. After all, the likelihood of any of the regulars having heard of Yelp, let alone checking it on a regular basis, is on a par with the chances of them asking for an umbrella in their pint of Tennent's. read more
