I was visiting Bremerton to attend a conference and knew that after sitting in meeting rooms for…read moretwo days I would be in need of some serious physical and mental healing. I found that at Indigo Moon Yoga. I walked there from my hotel near the Kitsap Ferry Terminal. It's a small town; it takes very little time and effort to get anywhere, and Indigo Moon Yoga was super easy to find and accessible. Kathleen greeted me with a smile, asked some friendly questions that would help her get to know me and my practice, and made sure I had everything I needed for a great session (a level 2/3 Vinyasa class). I had no trouble following her as she led us through asanas and I left the class feeling really refreshed. It's a beautiful studio that is thoughtfully organized and well cared for. There's good space to stash your bag, a well-appointed bathroom, shelves of clean, new props (not the ratty, hairy, sticky or otherwise beat-to-hell props I've run into at other studios), and Kathleen has added lots of great extra touches like tea after class, or a bite of Godiva chocolate to take out the door. It was clear to me that the guiding principles of compassion, connectivity and community aren't just words that sound good on a website. I think Indigo Moon Yoga walks the walk, y'all. You should go there. Work on your practice and support a local business, Bremertonians. I want to be able to re-visit Indigo Moon Yoga the next time I'm in town.

I am writing this review in hopes to make known a few reasons why I will not be getting a membership. As someone who deeply enjoys not only a good workout but also a lovely self care sauna/steam and shower routine, I am shocked at the towels they provide. They do not wrap around my body because of how small they are. There is also a limit on one main towel and one face towel. I end up sitting on the face towel in the sauna with my sweaty skin on the bench so that I can use the towel that doesn't even wrap around my body for after the shower. It's awful. I don't believe I should have to bring my own towel to a recreation center which also has a pool. There is also no lotion or extras besides a couple hair dryers. The locker rooms are also rarely clean when I come. Please, please get better towels and allow us more than one body towel. I would absolutely reconsider joining.

I like the various niches set up for you to exercise including a large studio for dancercise-style classes, a smaller room for yoga with barre along the back wall, and a main, and secondary weights and resistance machines room. Note this gym is on the second level not the ground floor--the latter is where office spaces for the Parks and Recreation department, spacious changing room complexes with lockers, sauna and steam rooms, and showers are located. Additionally a hallway on the upper level (where people do stretches on mats) overlooks the tennis complex --a great spot for people watching or game watching distraction while stretching. I like the classy clientele here and the friendly front desk staff. They offer small towels if you like to sit in the sauna or steam room. Late in the evenings towards closing you get the football team from the high school. Weekend mornings you get the middle-aged crowd. Pick your times judiciously! My peeve is that they do not have T-Rex pull up stations, I paid $50 less at a YMCA in Los Angeles that had a full room of T-Rex band stations, and a weighted rope swinging work out. Neither available here. Nor weighted smaller balls and slider pads for pilates type exercises. So the BI Rec Center has rather limited weights equipment--more standard and traditional-- while I do give props for it being well-maintained and cleaned. There are at least three cable machines. In the summer I have joined on a monthly basis for outdoor lap swimming. It's a limited size pool but hey I could usually find a lane for myself --no sharing-- to swim outdoors. Afternoons are when kids come in, but mornings are wonderful to do lap swimming as adults. For BI residents, there is no surcharge to start a month-basis membership and that is the best way I found to do this gym as I could get membership during the dark winter months when immersion in sauna and steam room make a huge quality of life difference.
