The parties run back to back so there is no buffer between the party before you to get their stuff cleaned up so you can get your stuff set up. I don't doubt that some parents experience good things from Artisan. From what I hear their infant…read morecare is excellent and we loved the addition of music in the curriculum. But in speaking to other parents of kids my daughter's age, they were/are having similar issues with staff and management that we had before we left. I would recommend against transferring into Artisan at least after toddler stages. We immediately looked to Artisan for a preschool program because we had toured there when she was an infant and loved the presentation from that time. My daughter began her experience with daycare at a small in-home facility in Burlington and did very well there, but eventually grew out of that format and needed more structure with children her age. We didn't look anywhere else, and were excited to move her into a preschool classroom shortly after turning three last year (May 2018). Over the summer, we were presented with mixed reports of behavior issues (completely uncharacteristic of what we had seen to that point) and other reports of her doing well. We were not sure what the problem would be other than maybe a transitional issue. After a teacher change in the fall, we discussed the plan created with the previous teachers over the summer at the outset with the new staff. We began to notice however that they didn't seem to be following it. We again kept getting mixed reports from different teachers as to her progress. To be honest, her teachers' quality seemed to go down with the new staff. Also new was Director Julie, who eventually presented us with an ultimatum in November 2018 that we enroll her in public funded special needs evaluations or be removed from Artisan because they had no answers. This pressure was confusing and didn't sit well with us and we found their expertise to be lacking, so we didn't trust their insistence on there being a special need issue. I come from a family full of educators at all levels and their inability to creatively find and enact a plan didn't seem right with anyone. We pulled her from Artisan before Christmas 2018 and found a spot for her at Primrose in Burlington for even more money that Artisan was charging, but the cost difference was well worth it. Any behavioral issues were quickly dealt with and now, at 4.5 years old in a pre-k program she is excelling in all areas and working on first grade material. We're given glowing praise from her new teacher frequently. We purposely waited to see how she fared at her new school before posting any reviews, but her success only further shows me Artisan staff did not have the training or creative capacity to solve what amounted to be a simple problem. My wife and I experienced a lot of stress over her inconsistent care and Julie's ultimatum. Now we sleep very well knowing our daughter is in good hands at Primrose.

My daughter has been attending the ASC since she started Kindergarten 4 years ago, and has also…read moreattended the summer program. This year, her younger sister joined her. There is no bus service at our elementary school, so the ASC picks up our girls to bring them to the ASC after school. We have never had an issue with pick-up at the school. The program is well-organized and once arriving at the ASC, the kids have a structured program with plenty of downtime as well as homework assistance and designated time to read. There are days when I pick up my daughters and they don't want to leave because they are enjoying the activity in which they are engaged. The staff are also great - very responsive to any concerns and always professional. Every one of them seems to appreciate the kids and have been sensitive to any special requests. At one point, when my older daughter was being left out of a game and her feelings hurt, one of the directors stepped in and reminded the other kids about being inclusive. Kids are allowed to be kids, but the ASC is also great about teaching important life lessons and setting limits to help them get along and they do it in a constructive and respectful way. ASC is open for a summer program as well, and my older daughter says she doesn't want to go anywhere else for day camp. The summer program includes daily trips to the city pool, twice a week field trips that the kids love and lots of in-house fun. ASC covers school vacations as well, scheduling both fun and enriching activities for the kids. The After School Club is also a great value. Their prices are not the absolute lowest in Woburn, but they are very competitive, particularly considering all that the ASC does with and for the kids. It is definitely worth the peace of mind knowing that my girls are safe, happy and engaged in some great activities. Tuition can be paid either by check or using their online system, which is very convenient.

Whew. Whoever came up with that bright idea, I hope no longer works there! I came back here out of curiosity after a good 1-2 years away after discovering the Waltham Y, which is about the same drive time from where i live (Arlington) but is open later and has a sauna which this Woburn location lacks (they do have a steamroom), and is generally a much more pleasant environment. Now it appears that Woburn Y has extended its hours so that it closes just 30 minutes earlier M-Thu (9:30pm), 1 hour earlier on Fridays (7pm), and the same time on Sat/Sun (6pm)...so they're almost there! Everything is about the same as I remembered, except they have moved the one squat cage in the main functional fitness/cardio central area to the front workout room next to two other squat cages, where all the free weights and the one pulley multi-station is, making it even more crammed/crowded than before. The weight plates are strangely mismatched, which makes things a bit awkward if you are using one of the squat stations at the same time as folks are on the other two squat stations as well as the leg press machine, all of which share this random (3 different kinds!) weight plate collection. Now, God help you if you come here to lift weights during the peak 5-7pm period: I swear, it's just as bad as Planet Fitness in terms of being packed in there like sardines! Must be hell whenever there's a flu, cold, or covid bug going around. Oh, and remember what I said about "too bad this place lacks a sauna"---well, actually it DOES have a sauna: i.e. this front weights area, where the AC either doesn't work or is kept at 82F!!! Yep, while the main central area was probably a very comfy 68-72F, pretty much everybody in this cramped little space was sweating buckets! Luckily the day I went, everyone must've remembered to use deodorant because nobody particularly stank...but I can imagine how bad it must be on those days when somebody does! It seems like this Y's management has made a conscious decision to relegate lifters to second-class status, keeping the largest and most pleasant space in the center of the gym, with floor-to-ceiling glass views of the swimming pool and main street, for the "functional fitness" and dubious Life Fitness strength machines users. I'm guessing it's for cold, hard dollars-and-cents economic reasons, i.e. to promote personal training. People who lift weights usually know what the hell they're doing and are far less likely to shell out $50-70/hour for personal training. So I did notice a number of personal trainers with their clients in that central area, but for the most part the it was far less densely packed than the front weights area. Sigh, capitalism...

My older daughter graduated from the school two years ago and my youngest is about to begin her…read moresecond year. For our family the school has been wonderful. The staff is talented and committed. There is a parent participation component, as with all cooperative programs. This is something that drew me to the program. I was amazed my first year how varied people's situations are - one or both parents working outside the home part or full time, nanny's, grandparents and family friends helping out at pick-up and drop-off, as well as moms and dads working as stay-at-home parents. I didn't carpool, but some families arranged carpools. I often swapped child-care of my youngest daughter (when my oldest was in school) on parent-help days and then would watch another family's younger child when it was their turn. I've benefited from the sense of community at the school, and the chance to have a few hours every month or so to be with my child at school. The best part though is the positive experience my children have had at the school, developing social skills and learning through play.

My youngest attended their toddler program last year, and will be entering the 3-year-old program…read morethis fall. We had a great experience in his first year. It is a cooperative program, so you have to be open to that aspect. I personally loved helping in the classroom and getting to observe my child interacting with his friends. There are some volunteer components -- one work day a year to help maintain the school and grounds and service on one committee -- but they certainly aren't onerous. It's not for everyone, but so far I've found it very manageable as a working parent. The other parents are very supportive and open to switching schedules. I'm new to town, so I've found it a valuable way to meet other people and find a sense of community. The curriculum is play-based, so the focus is more on developing imagination, healthy social interaction, etc. I'm looking forward to seeing how the curriculum develops as my son progresses.
