Even though Green Park is adjacent to Buckingham Palace, I hadn't heard of it and didn't go in search of it -- instead I happened to come across it as my husband and I were on our way to Harrods (I love walking around when on vacation and discovering things). During our trip to London, we ended up walking through Green Park twice; the first time we just walked through, but the second time we had more time to explore. The day we had more time to spend in the park, we saw the Diana Fountain (Diana, as in the Roman goddess), the Queen Victoria Memorial, and of course Buckingham Palace (nothing interesting was happening at Buckingham Palace as we passed by). Although not the most exciting park (to be fair, we didn't spend too much time in the park and probably missed several interesting points of interest), it was still a lovely park and worth walking through. The building is wonderful, and - if you happen to visit at a time when "London's Living Room" (a space on the top floor used for events) is accessible, then the views are second to none. There is a café on the ground floor, with a good range of decent food, at reasonable prices. I would recommend stopping in as part of a trip to the area - London Dungeons, the Tower, HMS Belfast are all very close - rather then as an end in itself. Every member of the public has to go through a metal detector to get into the building. There is never a long wait.

While walking to Harrods, we came across a lovely little garden with interesting statues. I later…read morelooked it up (just in case I could get a Yelp review out of it), and found out it was Belgrave Square. According to my research (ie. Google and Wikipedia), Belgrave Square is a 200m by 200m square surrounded by various embassies, and within the square is a garden, which is what we saw. Unfortunately I didn't have time to fully explore the garden (apparently there are tennis courts within), but what I did see (which wasn't much), I enjoyed. There are several statues of famous historical figures, and I saw statues of Simón Bolívar; Robert Grosvenor, 1st Marquess of Westminster (never heard of him); and Homage to Leonardo, which was a replica of his famous drawing Vitruvian Man. Even though I was only passing by and didn't have time to take more than a few photos, the garden was definitely noteworthy, and if you're in the area, it's worth a visit. This is a very understated memorial. It's basically a stream that goes around in a circle with one…read moreside having a miniature waterfall. There are a few low cement bridges (Pretty much just a continuation of the sidewalk) to walk across to get to the grassy middle. Also near the waterfall is an engraving on the inside of one of the stone pavements with the inscription "Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain opened by Her Majesty The Queen on 6th July 2004." It's a nice peaceful respite away from all the hustle and bustle of the streets of London. It's also kid friendly. When we went there was a little boy and girl who were completely soaked trying to wrestle each other down into the water. There were also parents holding their children's hands as they stomped on the calf high water.

Princess Diana Memorial Fountain is located in Hyde Park, London. It's a nice scenic walk with…read morelocals jogging and walking their dogs. The fountain contains 545 pieces of Cornish granite shaped by the latest computer-controlled machinery and pieced together by hand using traditional skills. It runs around the park in a loop. You are allowed to sit on the edge of the Memorial and refresh your feet. It was a cold October and I can't imagine anyone wants to remove their shoes/socks. The fountain was designed to express Diana's spirit, love of children and openness. Although I appreciate the concept but I can't help but to feel like it was lacking. How about a statue of Diana? or a plaque about Diana? It's still a lovely park and I'm glad I made plans to visit while I was in London.

We spent four nights in London last month, and our afternoon walking through Jubilee Gardens and…read moreSouth Bank was a highlight of our trip. My husband and I were with our two sons, ages three and six, and it took us about an hour, walking at the three-year-old's pace, to get from the London Eye to the Tate Modern. It was a lovely hour, full of beauty and delight. The riverside promenade was scenic every step of the way, with views of the Thames and the cityscape across the river. There were plenty of trees providing shade on a hot day, and lots of people walking in both directions, enjoying some time outside. We made several stops to interact with the various interesting features planted up and down the walk. The kids loved the red metal sculptures that looked like funhouse park benches, which functioned both as public art and play structures. They were fascinated by the teenagers at the covered skate park, doing their teenager tricks. There was also a row of cute little wood houses with picnic benches inside, shady places to eat lunch, or climb up and try to touch the ceiling, take your pick. I don't quite know where South Bank fits into the life of the average local, but it certainly is a wonderful place to visit. I feel like I'd take advantage if I were raising kids in London. It's a beautiful free resource that fills me with love for the city.

Actually that was the first thing I did, and I'm not even a London virgin. With relatively little effort, it encapsulates the vibrancy of the city from the Tower Bridge to the east to the London Eye in the southwest. Jamie W and I stayed at the very cool Sea Containers Hotel right on the banks of the Thames and smack dab in the middle of the walkway (review: https://yelp.to/HMoq6dQSA-). Walking east took us sequentially to landmarks such as the Tate Modern, the Millennium Bridge, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre (Photo 6), and bustling Borough Market. Going west took us past more idiosyncratic stops like the South Bank Skate Park (Photo 9), the National Theatre, and the graffiti art of the Leake Street Tunnel. The diversity of sights doesn't even speak to the iconic views across the river of the Houses of Parliament and the Tower of London. So take this walk. Your Instagram account will thank you. The grounds of the Kenwood House in Hampstead are one of my favourite places in London. The…read moreconcerts that are put on here in the summer are lovely, but other than this, the grounds are just a great place to go for picnics, have nice walks and fly kites on the hill. With lots of green grass, ponds, small forests and hidden areas, it's just a lovely place to be.
