First meal in New Zealand? Chinese food, of course! It's hard to find authentic Chinese food back home, and King Made Noodles, specializing in Beef Noodle Soup, in Auckland was pretty spot on. Never knew this, but quite a lot of restaurants (and stores) close early--before 8:30-9pm. Thankfully, King Made Noodle closes at 10pm on weekdays! So walking around Auckland evening into nighttime was quiet, but Fort Street, where King Made Noodles is located, had a few places open to eat. This really looked liked a fun place to eat, and it was! Really enjoyed the woodsy decor! The main thing, of course, is the hand made soup noodles where you can select the size of noodle you want. All the noodles are hand pulled to order. You can see the noodle master make it right next to the bar. There are also lamb skewers, dumplings, roujiamo (Chinese burger), and an array of small cold dishes such as wheat gluten, bean curd strips, wood ear mushrooms, lotus root, and etc. (very similar to China). Started with two appetizers: marinated bean curd strips, and seaweed salad. The Bean Curd Strips was simple, tasty, and tender. The Seaweed salad was very good. Tender, spicy, garlicky, and flavorful. Lamb Skewers were good. Nice, meaty pieces of tender lamb with the slightest gaminess. Nicely spiced, good char, but needed a touch more salt. Chinese Lamb Burger was good. The meat inside was basically the same as the lamb skewers, but the lamb in here was more dry and tough. It got hard to eat after a while. Lastly, the Traditional Beef Noodle Soup was good as well. The broth was decent--beefy, clean, and homey. The noodle was really good. You can definitely taste it's freshly made as it's light and springy. The beef itself was all right. Thin, lean, and tender. Similar to the beef slices in Pho. But overall seemed toned down. Overall, a nice place to grab food. I'm always happy to have fresh, hand-pulled noodles with authentic flavors with other authentic dishes. Service was good. You order at the front, and then find a place to sit. Everything is mostly self-service. Choose your beer from the fridge, get your utensils near the kitchen, grab your water from the dispenser near the front door. Food came out quick and hot. read more

The part that wasn't fat was tender and tasty but again, it was hard to avoid all the grease. I only ate about half of the bowl, maybe less. Even before the last slurp of noodle I could feel that grease making its way through my intestines. The result was inevitable. We went to this place because of the 7 preview reviews thinking that it was going to be a 4 star food and service experience. Unfortunately, this was not the case. To begin with, all the tables were dirty and the staff even didn't notice it. The place is self-service, but they don't even care to ask you how is everything going or to pick up the items when your table is too full. The sizes are too big just for one person. Now, the most important part here, the food: it wasn't what I was expected. The A2 item (beef soup) which is not accurate to the picture from their website. It was was too greasy, red with spices and fatty meat pieces that destroyed the concept of noodle soup. We also noticed at the end that the cook was also the dishwasher and the cleaner of the kitchen. Hope he was really taking care of washing his hands after each task.
