I've been following "The Hammers" for 7 years and can't wait until the first week of Feb every year to be a part of it! I've heard it called an "8 hour car wreck", "America's toughest off road race" and "Burning man for gear heads" but honestly there are no words to describe the event. The Hammers brings (let's call it conservatively) 50,000 fans to Means dry lake to watch the competitions and participate in fan events that run from Sunday through Saturday. The drivers are accessible to their fans, the organization (Ultra4) sets up these huge jumbo tron tv's in the desert so if you are at one hill or back on vendor row you can watch the race that's going on out there in the Middle of Know Where. They are shooting the entire event with helicopters and live feeding to the jumbo trons. If you are a motorsports fan this is a must attend event! Spectator wristbands for the whole week of events are only $20.00 again this year. (2016) The other side of this is the event feeds all of the businesses in the area. The communities of Johnson, Yucca, Lucerne Morrongo vallies and Landers, Joshua Tree, 29 Palms and Victorville all get business from competitors and spectators alike! I hope you make it out there during the event, and I am sure that it will encourage you to come back again to enjoy OUR DESERT (ALL OF OURS, As AMERICANS) and the largest OHV AREA in the country when you might be the only one there like most of my days out there.

    Carl's concession

We have been going for years and enjoy it every time! We go with a large group and we tend to spend a nice amount of money on new supplies for our toys throughout the vendors. This year was also perfect until the end. Carl's concession stand was dirty and the employees were rude . While packing out in line they threw a huge fit because we jumped in line at our camp spot instead of going back wards miles. Every year this is how everyone packs out and we nicely let people in line like grown adults do. But not Carl's concession stand- he decided to jump out of his truck while recording me screaming profanities at me and my 15 yr old daughter . This guy shouldn't be at the koh if he can't handle common courtesy and respect for others!

King of The Hammers takes place in Johnson Valley, CA every February and is considered to be the "toughest one day off road race in the country" More than 300 teams and 30,000 spectators will come out to the area on Mean's Dry Lake known as "hammertown" in 2013. Spectators get to experience a week of off road racing in the beautiful Johnson Valley. This race is home to the King of The Motos, King of the Hammers UTV Race, Smittybilt Every Man Challenge and the Griffin King of The Hammers presented by Nitto Tire.

Driving from Orange County to Bullhead City, we saw a billboard sign many many months ago about the…read moreNewberry Springs Pistachio Festival and thought, hmmmm that sounds just like something we should do! I did some Google research and found out that it is the first Saturday in November. So we set a reminder and over those months we talked about it every time we'd drive by Newberry Springs. Welp... November was almost here and we decided to go camping up near Calico that weekend and then stop in at the Festival to see what it's all about.... and we were not disappointed, not one bit! Way better than we assumed it would be. Vendors selling all sorts of unique items, pistachios for sale, kickball tournament, bouncy houses, petting zoo, "old timey shootout" reenactment, smoothies, live music, pistachio brittle, pistachio rocca, flavored pistachios, seasoned pistachios, and one of the best Indian Frybreads we've ever had! We didn't come hungry or we would have had the Indian Frybread Taco!! Holy cow, they are ginormous and look amazing! We settled for just a frybread and added honey and powdered sugar. It was deeeeeeeeeeeeelicious!!! Hot out of the fryer too! We chatted with some locals while eating and also with some of the vendors. It was a feel-good event for us and we'd definitely come back! It's only the one day a year and this year it was from 9am - 4pm (maybe it always is?) so make sure you time it right! No cost to get in, but bring your wallet, you'll want to purchase something, I guarantee it! Where's Newberry Springs, you ask? Well, it is just off I-40 at Newberry Road, just south of the National Trails Highway (Historical Route 66). Little town, big heart! Very very glad that we decided to check it out, can't wait to share it with friends too! THANK YOU!!!

We decided to wait in the air conditioned car until the gates opened for the High Desert Music Festival & BBQ Showdown and until the line of music and BBQ fans died down in the high noon sunshine. Once we opened the car doors, the aroma of smoked barbeque meat permeated the air. As we entered the BBQ Village, you could see all of the Teams working their magic as the Kansas City BBQ Society sanctioned competition was well underway. Teams had timetables to turn in their chicken, pulled pork, brisket, and ribs. Unfortunately, nothing would be served to the public until after 2pm so that the teams could concentrate completely on their entries. There were a few outside vendors that were selling food which was a good thing. Heavenly Delights gave out samples of their pipin' hot cobblers. We sampled the Peach Delight with Pecans. It was definitely pipin' hot and right out of the oven. The peaches were baked perfectly so they were not too mushy and held a familiar peach texture so you knew what kind of fruit was being used. It had just the right amount of sweetness. The pecans added a crunchy texture to the mix. I can imagine that it tasted really good with a scoop vanilla ice cream on top. Pig on a Twig amped up our appetite with fresh smoked turkey legs. All the barbeque competitors' smoking & grilling made us crave meat and a turkey leg was the closest we could get to it. The skin was smoky and crispy. The meat was tender and had an excellent smoky flavor. The turkey had a great amount of flavor so I assume it was marinated or brined before smoking and cooking. It definitely hit the spot for lunch! Lemonade Shakers also helped with the heat of the day with flavored lemonade and iced teas. They had a great deal that if you kept your cup, you would save $2 on refills. It was well worth it as we drank 6 between the two of us. The lemonade was fresh lemon juice squeezed, shaken with the lemon peels, sugar, ice, and your choice of flavor: plain, cherry, mango, or strawberry. They were fantastic! It would have been great to have a sugar-free option of Splenda or stevia as an alternative. After feeding our appetite, we walked over to the Car & Bike Show presented by All N All Car Club (SoCal Chapter). Atomic Orange Metallic Corvette, 1938 Chevrolet Master 4-Door Touring Sedan, and tricked out kitted roadster (straight out of a ZZ Top video) were among the cars on display. I thought to myself, "My Camaro would have made great addition." Uncle Tim's Best West Barbecue Sauce gave out samples of their line of barbecue sauces. Depending on your spicy level, there is Mild, Medium, and Habañero. The Habañero was actually not all that spicy, but you did feel the heat in the back of your throat after eating. But it was not uncomfortable so you could actually taste the flavor of the habañero pepper which goes really nice with the barbecue sauce itself. We actually got to meet Uncle Tim and he's great guy who loves BBQ. What a better place to be than at a BBQ Showdown! At 2pm, we started our sampling of BBQ that some of the competitors were giving out. All samples were given out with tickets purchased at the gate at $2 each. The first place we tried was Real Texas Style BBQ showcasing their pork ribs. The ribs had an excellent bark on the outside with beautiful dark pink smoked meat. The ribs were a little on the dry side, but flavorful. I'm not sure how they scored as "Real Texas Style BBQ" was not their competition name. Tropical Heat BBQ from Ventura County, CA entered all of the competition categories. We tried their brisket and requested the fatty end. The outside had a caramelized bark. The meat had a thick, dark pink smoke ring and was succulently tender. The marbling of this cut helped to keep it tender and juicy throughout the cooking process. They came in #13 out of 29 competitors with a score of 162.8228 in the brisket category. Master of Disaster "A Completely Unprofessional BBQ Team" from Santa Ana, CA provided samples of their pulled pork. It tasted more like carnitas with a little bit of smoky flavor. I'm not sure if they entered this into the competition unless they had a different competition name. They were also selling a bunch of different BBQ plates for pretty good prices. We decided to hide out in the shade for a while to check out the music festival. Tessie and the Calico Cats from Victorville, CA got our toes tapping to some classic country music. Tessie's father, Frankie Flash, is an awesome harmonica player and also won The Gong Show in 1988 (the show came back from hiatus from 1976-1978). Their music whisked us back to days of Dale Evans and Roy Rogers. Imagine yourself on a horse in cowboy attire with Dale and Roy singing on either side of you.

Majority of the vendors that are regulars didn't have anything set up last night. I was hoping to pick up some houseplants but the vendor wasn't there. Guess with the heat, it's not good for the plants to be out. Rightfully with that. But it did seem like the food area did have more vendors compared to what I've seen before. Usually walking along the strip, it tends to be packed with vendors and shoppers but the past few weeks, not so many. Summer tends to be quiet as people do leave town. The snowbirds going back to Canada. Even restaurants close for the summer season. Same with the vendors here, some comes every other week while there's still the regulars that comes every week. Small local vendors trying to get their product out there. They have the locals vendors that I frequent for my baked goods and sweets. It's a nice little shopping and food area that's great for a Thursday night. Restaurant and shops do open a little later for the event. It was quite hot last night so a lot of vendors weren't out. The Lights Fest - Lantern was so moist that it was hard to open it without ripping

Wow this was an awful experience. This was my second lights fest event and I have to say I'm very…read moredisappointed in this one. I had high hopes since it was a closer drive from the San Fernando Valley but boy was I wrong. Started off great with a fairly short drive to the destination parking lot. They had several parking lots designated for the event with shuttles picking people up. We had no problem locating the parking and shuttles that dropped us off at the front gate of the field where they held the event. Check in was a breeze as we got there by 2 pm and people were just starting to make their way. The venue was a large field which I think was a football field. There were lots of food trucks and porta potties available which was great. We made our way to the grass and chose a tiki to camp around. As the afternoon passed more and more people started coming and the football field got crowded. Obviously since it's December the temperature dropped as soon as the sun began to set. Our blankets that we were sitting on began getting moist from the mist and moisture from the grass. Out lanterns got wet too. They made the announcement that we were about to start. Staff began lighting lanterns but ours was a dud. Our flame was so tiny. I had to go walking around everywhere looking for someone to help. Finally I flagged someone down who came to take a look. He basically didn't do anything but put the flame to the wick a few seconds longer then walked away. And as expected our flame got smaller again. The staff was not very friendly at this event. The countdown began and of coarse people had to ruin it by letting theirs go before the countdown ended. First few seconds was pretty cool until people's fully lit lanterns started falling from the sky because of the moisture that built up on the lanterns making them heavy. It got to the point where it was Pretty scary. Someone's lantern fell right behind me and came this close to lighting my hair on fire. Not cool! And some lanterns were getting stuck on the tall poles on the field with lights. Let's just say the lanterns did not flow very smoothly at this particular location. Would I do this again? Yes but definitely not at this same location. The bright lights from the football field, the moisture in the air, and the poles killed the dramatic effects of the lanterns rising to the sky. The worse part was trying to leave. They had absolutely no system set up to properly organize the boards of people trying to get into the buses. People were cutting left and right. There were lines forming everywhere. There were cops there that just stood there and let the insanity continue. It got to the point where people were crowding the incoming buses in the middle of the parking lot just to get inside. Just awful! Pro's: closer to San Fernando Valley than the other Southern California location. You don't have to drive through the desert just to get there. The idea of having people park offsite would have been great had they had a properly organized system of getting people in line to get back on the buses leaving. Price of this event is more reasonable and easier to get tickets than the other competitors. Con's: location gets too wet in the evenings. If you have blankets on the floor they'll get wet. The lanterns soak up the moisture in the air. The moisture makes the lanterns hard to light and fly. Other people are very inconsiderate and there's no staff around to keep people controlled. The moist lanterns fall down from the sky and could land on you or your stuff. So dangerous! Or
