It's a cost-efficient gym and that's the only reason it's not a 1/2 star. But the pool has many issues, there are 3 lanes, fast lane, middle lane and slow lane when it comes to swimming but the rules don't get enforced, you constantly have little kids and old people in the fast lane just hogging it swimming like they're on vacation. This makes getting an intensive workout in difficult when it comes to the pool, they need to enforce the rules. If people constantly have to pass you in a lane, you don't belong in a fast lane. Second issue is the gymnasium, you barely have time to play your favorite sport. They will dedicate hours of time to useless sports like tennis, soccer, pickleball? I usually love to go to Coney Island beach during the summer months but unfortunately when the winter months are here i cant go to the beach because its cold , so i come here to the indoor pool during the cold winter months . Avoid this camp! Bad option for busy families! The location of this camp on an army base makes them extremely inflexible to families' needs. They have this ridiculously convoluted system of bus-only entry/exit, even for a "bus stop" that is literally right outside the entrance to the base, about 100 yards from where the camp activities take place. What this means is that you can not pick your kid up early or have them arrive late, no matter the reason. If they have a doctor's appointment, a lesson, or you're just having a little trouble getting out in the morning. The only option is for them to miss the entire day, and there is ZERO financial recourse if this is the case. They'll happily take your money, not allow your kid to come to camp, and blame it on the regulations of the army base, and say it's in the name of safety. Case in point: my wife got our camper to the entrance of the base (again, this is a short walk from where the camp is held), at 9:02 this morning. The bus (yes, a bus must come pick her up even though we drive her there) had just left. My wife called the counselor, and was told Hannah would have to miss camp. She's standing there, lunch in hand, swimsuit in her backpack, at the entrance to the camp at 9:02am, having gotten there at 9 every other time, and she's being told she can't come in. My wife complains that this is unfair and she's told, as a "special consideration", that they would send the bus back but that it would be "at least 30 minutes". My wife has to leave for work and can't wait, and obviously we're not going to leave her there by herself, so is left with no option but to take her back home, which was tremendously disruptive to her day and ours. And none of their communication was handled with any grace - it was all very blaming. If you're a busy parent who has ever been in this situation, you know how that feels. In 17 years as a consumer of childcare, from day care to pre school to babysitters to schools to summer camps, I have never experienced being turned away like that. That the camp's only alternative is to have a mother and daughter sit and wait for at least 30 minutes is outrageous. And it's not me who's supposed to solve that problem but it's an incredibly easy problem to solve: just have a counselor stay at the gate to wait a reasonable amount of time (30 minutes?) For any late comers, and then the kid can hang with them, wait for the bus, and still have a day of summer fun, and parents can get on to work and other responsibilities. Not to mention any other of a number of reasonable ways to be more flexible around drop off/pickup even within the constraints of being housed on an army base. It's their responsibility to make that happen if they're going to be a childcare organization. When I called to complain, I spoke to the parent communications person, who lectured me about being on time, continually fell back on how base regulations have her hands tied, and refused to make the situation right in any way, or even acknowledge that anything was wrong with the situation. She coldly gave me the "policy, policy, policy" runaround, made me feel completely unheard, and refused to put me i. Touch with her higher-ups. She also told me there is a WhatsApp group for the buses which gives real time updates and which parents use to communicate. When I told her this is the first we've heard about it, she said it was linked to in emails. It wasn't. We have gone back through all of the emails and found no mention of it. No counselor, bus driver, or other camp personnel have ever mentioned it to us either. But regardless of anything else, let the image sink in: camper present with camp paraphernalia at the entrance to the base, literally in sight of where her activities take place, at 9:02 am, and is told she has to go home, or, as a "special favor", she can stand there alone for 30 minutes until they can drive a bus back around to pick her up. We are extremely disappointed with how this was handled, we will not be returning to this camp next year, and recommend anyone who might ever have a blip in their routine to avoid it at all costs as well. read more

It's the local Y! Or the Jewish Y to be more specific, since many of the special programs revolve around Judiasm and holidays. That's not to say that you can't join if you aren't Jewish. You totally can, and won't feel the least uncomfortable either. Like your standard Y, they cater to families. There is a small gym with up-to-date equipment and weights, though it's not by any means close to a regular gym in quantity or size. But for your average, run of the mill adult, it will do. There is also a basketball court and racquetball court divided by a heavy tarp. On certain nights, they remove the tarp and have volleyball games. The highlight, IMO, is a huge indoor swimming pool. When I say huge, I mean olympic sized pool huge. Really, it's that big. Great for doing real laps. There's also a steam room and a sauna in the locker rooms, the sauna being a personal favorite. On the downside, the Y seems to really lean toward the older folks, like 50s and up older. You don't see many young people there. As a teenager, I was never really involved since not many kids came here. As I said, the exercise room is small too. And in the summer time, there's always accidents in the pool. I mean P-ool. And it's not always the toddlers either. Luckily they chlorinate the water enough to kill anything, and it'll even turn purple in that area sometimes. Heheh. That deters other from purposely going in the pool instead of running to the bathroom. read more

As the other reviewer noted, it really is a Jewish Y (I'll get to that later). I'm a new member and joined in June 2013. I joined because it's the closest swimming pool near my house and I'm learning how to swim. The swimming pool is fine with lap swimming on one half of the pool and a general area on the other. The swimming pool depths range from 3 feet to 12 feet. The measurements are on the wall and they have dividers for the deep area. Water temperatures are comfortable and there's always at least one lifeguard on duty. Also, you need a swimming cap to use the pool. I do have to say that there are A LOT of kids. No joke, the general swim area is dominated with kids under 13. I was there on a Monday at around 7pm and the pool was still packed with kids. If you're a new swimmer and an adult, they do have Adults only swimming times early in the morning and at night (check their website). The men's locker room and shower are clean and well maintained. There's an exit in the locker room that leads directly to the swimming pool. My only complaint is their hours of operations. They normally open at around 7am and close at 10pm. However, they close at 5pm on Fridays (during the summer) and are closed on Saturdays. I looked at the calendar and it looks like they'll be closed for a lot of days in September for the Jewish holidays. Overall, I'm very happy with this gym and its swimming pool. The staff go above and beyond to make the kids happy and keep the parents informed. I'm always able to reach staff whether through the GroupMe app or by phone. Systematic Sexual Assault During Pool Open Swim Hours I've been a member for years, coming here when I was younger for swimming lessons then for open swim when I was older. During the years I've spent at Kings Bay Y, I've been victim to many incidents of sexual assault. Most of these perpetrators were older men who saw a young girl's body swimming past as an open invitation to touch her without her consent. I've been inappropriately touched many times, have had grown men slip fingers under my swimsuit as I swam past, have experienced men trailing their fingers along my thighs, etc. I've notified staff for the "more serious" incidents and the typical response was a shrug and a "what can we do" attitude. I've asked if they took ids from men I've reported, if they kept a list of names of people in case of repeat offenses. They said no. There are some issues with teenage boys masturbating in the pool too. Overall, the pool is overcrowded during open swim, making it "easier" for inappropriate behavior to go unnoticed by staff, and even when the pool is not as crowded, the lanes set aside for lap swim are where the older men congregate and joining those lanes as a young women is like a fish wandering into shark territory. You will be eaten alive. Another issue of inappropriate behavior occurs in the women's lockers rooms where older women will unlock the shower doors (from the outside) when you're showering to see if anyone is inside. It is disgusting behavior and they can very easily knock on the door instead of violating someone and exposing them to the line of women waiting just outside the showers. Not only do these women lock doors, they will leave the doors open and walk off without a word. I've had this happen to me every time I used the shower there and I've seen it happen to others too. Again, Kings Bay Y seems to be seriously out of touch with the rampant misbehavior occurring at this center. I'm hoping there will changes that will make this a safer and healthier place for all. read more

He is always available to address my questions or concerns and a terrific role model for my son. My child attended Summer Swim Camp for two consecutive summers. While Summer 2017 I gave an amazing review based on our experience that summer with regards to Summer 2018 unfortunately I am unable to say the same. My child's second summer was cut short after he sustained a serious Concussion (head injury) after an older camper used excessive force on my young child that lead to my child's fall which he fell unconscious. I was alerted of the incident by the camp administration and left with my child in an ambulance to a trauma unit. Staff were very apologetic and contacted me concerning my child's condition. Sadly, after this incident I lost confidence in re-enrolling my child at the Kings Bay Y for Summer Camp or any program of the Kings Bay Y because of this very incident which could have been prevented. In addition, prior to this incident that very summer there was a minor occurrence before in which my child was injured on his way out the building for dismissal while walking and being escorted in the hall by older campers horsing around. Both incidents could have been prevented especially the major incident that left my child incapacitated for a great deal of time. If our Summer 2018 experience was anything like our Summer 2017 experience I would recommend however based on our experience I am saddened to say I do not. My 12 year old daughter completed session 1 teen camp. It was a last minute decision to enroll in camp, and it was our first time at this Y. I chose this Y because it had a nice variety of summer activities for a 12-14 year old child, who gets easily "bored". Well everyday they went on nice trips everyday and came home satisfied. The counselors were nice and also very professional. So if you dont want your kid home all summer playing video games it is worth the money, and is easy to get to by public transport and car. My child has been going to the Kings Bay Y for two years and is taking learn to swim lessons. First of all, I don't agree with the reviewer that says the water is warm because it is not... even the instructors are complaining that the water is cold. When I registered my child for lessons, I was told the water temperature is warm and 84 degrees because of the young kids, THIS IS NOT SO, THE WATER IS COLD. I find that this Y employs very young swim instructors and they are not experience enough in teaching the children. The pool and pool area is duty and needs to be cleaned frequently. I am not taking my child there anymore because during a swim lesson another child got sick and puked in the pool, they told everyone to get out but within 15mins. they were ready to start a new lesson. The little girls locker/shower is smelly and always packed with older folks over 60s and up. The older folks takes as long as 45 minutes in the shower and pretends to not understand english when ask to hurry up because the little girls are freezing while waiting to shower. There are always clumps of hair, razor, sanitary pads. The smell of urine is bad and the sink is dirty and always dripping. The older women sits on the bench naked without any towel under them and even scrub the feet and cut their toe nails on the bench. Looking at that is really gross and disgusting plus horrifying for my child. The place is old, they are charging expensive registration fee and expensive fees for lessons but not improving service. read more

So I took this organization to small claims court and none of the people involved in the incident appeared at the hearing they sent some young student who appeared on their behalf and pretended she is a licensed attorney, she lied about everything and made bogus allegations plus insulted my family oh and on top of it she tried to dismiss other small claims hearings I scheduled! Now here's what the judge decided she decided to rule in favor of Kings bay y and I did not get refunded for anything go figure the hard working tax paying parent who was protecting their child loses in court because the judge decided it's ok for kids to be left unsupervised and bullied and parents have to pay a lot of money to send these kids to camp and even if camp is in the wrong you can not rely on the court system! Oh and another thing the kings bay y sent me a letter threatening to sue me if I don't take down my review!!!! I will keep writing the reviews these crooks deserve they should not be working with kids! read more

Our daughter was attending summer camp in Kings Bay Y for the first time this year and we were extremely happy! This was our very first experience with summer camps and of course as parents we worried a lot. But Kings Bay Y has an amazing communication with parents. I was getting few texts with updates from the counselor every day plus pictures! There was no room to worry. Another great thing is that Kings Bay Y is doing every effort to make sure kids are having the best experience possible and they always have a plan B. For example there was a day when kids were supposed to spend most of the day outside in the Army Base campus in Bay Ridge, but the weather was bad and it was going to rain. So KBY changed the plan and took kids to the Museum of Natural History! It's just a little example, but isn't it amazing? Another thing that we were very happy about was the quality of lunches. So far we didn't get even a single complain about the food from our child. Warm and friendly staff, small groups, huge variety of activities and trips. I can't recommend this camp enough! read more

My son is 5 yo and attends rising star afterschool program in Kings Bay Y for school year 2014-2015. Never again. Would NOT recommend to a friend. What a shame, this complex has so much to offer but in reality it is very unprofessional; disorganized; unsupervised; rotation of staff is very high (if you can call them staff-school kids who need supervision themselves); no HW assistance what so ever; promised dance activity with DJ and show dance at the end of the year never happened; cooking happened couple of times during the year which was lots of fun for my son by the way; sport activities is a joke; computer games are okay though probably because they don't have to do anything with kids, just have computer running; staff input is ZERO. My son didn't gain much out of this experience, just a waste of time, energy and money. Oh, and about money, they initially charged us $385 a month and then suddenly without any notification they just start charging our credit card $410 for October, November and December (they issued a credit for January once we pointed out to them but what a mess!), and on top of that we paid for Sept'14 and June'15 initially in May 2014 but, surprise-surprise, they charged our credit card once again for June'15 on 06.03.15. We tried to call them twice to talk about this double charge for the month of June, but no person ever picks up the phone and they are not in the rush to return calls upon received voice messages. We are looking forward to resolution of this poor billing error. We are coming back to Kings Bay Y only for swimming lessons which are okay so far. By the way, summer camp, just like after school program, is not good in Kings Bay Y - poor organization, no supervision and careless staff. Once again, what a shame and what a waste of potentially good facility. Just because swimming is not bad so far, I am giving this place total of 1 star. Our whole family was very excited when we first started afterschool program in September 2014, oh well, another disappointment that cost us $4,235 (hopefully $3,850 once our last issue gets resolved). Good luck with your choices folks! I hope you will not be disappointed with choices you make for your kids. And I hope there is a hope for Kings Bay Y to become a good quality facility in the future and to be able to regain trust and respect which would require a LOT of work and many changes in supervision, control and management. read more
