There's a lot of chairs and tables by windows so you can get some natural sunlight while you read or work. The second floor has a lot of maps and information about Portsmouth which is nice if you're unfamiliar with the area. The staff is very friendly and help. I'd definitely like to visit again sometime!

This library is teeny-tiny but manages to have a pretty amazing selection. Nearly every book I…read morewant to read, they have. Don't be fooled by the small selection at the top level - check their catalog or ask the (exceedingly) friendly staff if they have what you want, as there's an entire lower level that the librarians have access to (it's not open to the public, but they will gladly go down and find what you want). They also offer a lot of community services, like CPR classes and children's activities.

this light sits behind the coast guard station in portsmouth harbor and is thoroughly inaccessible…read moresince the plannedemic according to the goat keepers which kind of detracts from the whole "let's go see some historic lighthouses" experience but slightly enhances the "we're already here so let's go have a look" and "do you think the coast guard is hiding something back there?" aspects of the trip so it's almost a push. original tower erected in 1771 was the first light north of bean-town; the current forty-eight foot tower was built in 1878, the focal plane for the fixed green light is 52' up and visible for 12 nautical miles give or take... automated in 1960 the light is still in use and the coast guard still holds title but the 'merican lighthouse foundation holds license since 2000 with the local chapter acting as stewards and fixing whatever needs it. the light is supposedly open to the public a few days each year but not right now because of storm damage and the impending change of seasons.

With Fort Constitution closed, all opportunities to visit the lighthouse are null. You can see…read moreanother lighthouse at the distance, in an island and maybe available with a boat, but the Portsmouth Harbor lighthouse is not available. You can walk around, go into street that lead to the area, but the lighthouse is not visible from the street unless you go further. Basically, skip until the fort is open again.

Shipbuilding began here in 1696 with the HMS Falkland, the first British ship built in the 13 colonies. Commissioned in 1800, famous ships refurbished here included The Constitution ("Old Ironsides") and the first of our nation's submarines built in 1917. Various buildings in this harbor held prisoners of the Spanish-American War and crews from captured German U-boats. President Roosevelt won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906 for his signing the Treaty of Portsmouth right here that ended the Russo-Japanese war in 1905. What looks like an unassuming harbor with working naval boats holds so much history dating back to the founding of these United States. Take your children and history buff friends here.
