Blimey, I sure had some bloody smashing grub for peanuts here!…read more As a recently self-appointed connoisseur of all British food (and avid UK slang pundit), I knew I had to grab a bite at this English fast food chain before my vacation ended. What could be more of an accurate portrayal of the fine food of this land? On a wonderfully not-foggy night drive up to York, I had the pleasure of needing to spend the penny (was that right?), so I exited into the first service stop I saw. I thought it would be a duff, scattered bunch of gas stations and fast food places, but it was actually one of those huge service centers that likens to a food court of a mall. I took a quick gander around. Why would I get Subway or Burger King when I could get fish and chips or a pie from this Harry Ramsden's just as quick? Dog's bollocks indeed. Since I had just eaten some fish and chips the night before--of course--I decided to go with the steak and ale pie! I haven't had that yet, so I figured now would be a cracking time to do it. After waiting in the tiny queue, I was gobsmacked when the cashier told me that they were out of my steak pie (how is that even possible at a fast food chain?). I didn't fancy waiting 20 minutes for one to be made, so I got the next best thing, a chicken pie! For less than 10 pounds, the pies come with a side of chips and mushy peas! Crikey! Mushy peas! Not exactly my cup of tea, but they sure were quite mushy. I thought the chicken pie was blinding! It definitely wasn't like the ones you find in the freezer section of your local supermarket. Super savory and with wonderfully contrasting textures in each bite. Perfect for warming up the soul from the biting winter weather outside. The portion size was just right, and my only complaint was that the outside crust was a bit burnt. I wish there were some Harry Ramsden's in the States--it could replace one of those rubbish burger joints. Next time I happen upon one of these in the UK, I'd probably want to try their "World Famous" fish and chips. Cheerio!

Would have given zero stars but the option wasn't there…read moreAvoid breakfast like the plague Disgusting Dry over cooked and when after one mouth full I returned it and asked for a replacement or a refund I was told in no uncertain terms that this inedible plate of rubbish was Non returnable and Non refundable. £11.50 for one mouth full that is still sitting on my stomach as my intestines don't Want it either. So as I say avoid like the plague. YUK

So if you're looking for a place to dine out, this isn't it. That said, I got my sweetie some fish, chips, and coleslaw. She said that the fish and chips were very good. (I asked her if it was as good as the battered cod at Wimpy, and she said, "No, but it's still very good!") She was much, much less happy with the coleslaw. She couldn't bring herself to eat it, so I'm taking off a star for that. Still, as long as you're not looking for coleslaw with your fish (or chicken), Mr Cod would be a good choice.

I would happily drive half hour from my home town to buy from Mr Cods. Or Coddies as we all know it…read moreas. I share everything that has been said in the previous review but I need to make it clear to one and all that if you eat in High Wycombe, like good value and tasty food, then this is the place for you. If you like good chips, not those frilly slimline tonic things you get from McDonalds, and you like them fat, soft, tasty and cooked almost to perfection then you seriously need to get in the queue and order away. I've never been in there for longer than 5 minutes and I always come out with a sad fat man smile just desperate to sit down and chomp away. They do awesome sauce / dips. If Curry is your thing, make sure you don't come away without ordering it. If spicy is your thing, then make sure you tell em (ring sore so I hear!!). They have a numbered board as you enter the shop 1 to about 16 (they keep adding things). Number 1 is my fave chicken burger and large chips (ol yes thank you) Dr Pepper drink and mild curry sauce. I used to love number 9 which I believe is 4 chicken strips coated in a spicy mix. It used to repeat during my sleep (apparently) and doing the swap has definitely saved me from divorce. Women eh? LOL I wish you all well and hope this has given you a good understanding what I think of the take away. At the end of the day it is only a fish and chip shop that sells lots of chicken?!? but believe me, one visit and no other will get a look in. Great value, great taste and its fun watching the lads who work there racing around trying to keep up with demand. Happy Eating, Churchie!!
