The music was amazing--including a grand piano and a banjo!--and the congregation participated fully and, it seemed, joyfully. The rabbi was very welcoming and made me feel at home. A high point: the Torah reading was particularly misogynistic, as old religious texts can be, and the reader pointed this out, to acclaim and laughter from the congregation. I will return soon.

I attended a Saturday morning service and Bat Mitzvah, and was impressed as soon as I walked in the building, I was immediately impressed with how light, bright and open everything was. The rabbi has a great personality - his love really comes through. The cantor has one of the most amazing singing voices I've ever heard - she is phenomenal! This is a reform congregation - and as the reviewer Joel mentioned - everyone is welcome! Gay, interfaith, whatever. It's a very warm and inviting place of community. I don't know that I was touched by the spirit to seek out a religious connection - but if that ever were to happen, I'd really hope I could find a place like BHS to call home. It's what a religious institution should be!

Interfaith and gay families have a home at the Brooklyn Heights Synagogue. There is a great concern for Tzedakah, education and mutual support. BHS has been running a homeless shelter for over 20 years, religious services, educational programs and social events. It is a place that can easily become your home.

Unfortunately, almost 30 years ago, I moved out of New York and while I am still a member, I do not frequently participate and am more active in my local congregation. Most Jews have never heard of Reconstructionism, although many non-Orthodox Jews share the values it espouses. If you are looking for a warm, caring, intellectually curious and meaningful Jewish experience I think you should visit WES and see if it can meet your spiritual needs. It's true; I'm a fan…read more FIrst, the gripes. No one said hello or good shabbes to me when I walked inside. We did not say a misheberach (healing) prayer. The Rabbi and Chazan / Cantor-guy never introduced himself as far as I can remember. There were not that many people there and I felt strange being one of the few single women there. One man took it upon himself, to scorn SF and while I'm trying to find him endearing (it is Shabbas and all), it made me want to belt him. Oh and services were at 6:30pm so I didn't have time to eat dinner beforehand. The good stuff: People wore jeans and women wore Kippot!! Once I said hello and Gut Shabbes, most people responded with hearty welcomes. They asked me questions and tried to help me find their ex-interim Rabbi when I went back to SF. There was a big rainbow flag that seemed to wink at me when I approached the shul. The songs were beautiful. The Cantor-guy had the most AMAZING voice and the Rabbi also had wonderful vocal power. The Rabbi was female and the service was egalitarian. She had a lovely way of involving the congregation and inviting us to meditate a bit. Plus, the people I sat next to were sweethearts. All in all, I am glad I went and I would go again.
