I don't know anything about the senior pastor at all so I can't comment about that. Usually visitors to a church assess the church by the sermon and music. But I have the unique experience of assessing by the inner workings I have observed and taken part in. Calvary Baptist Church is the church that the Billy Graham Association uses when they either have an event in NY or when they have a TV event and need phone counselors. I do have to comment on what one of the reviewers said. They said they like it when only one pastor preaches. I have to respectfully disagree. It is much healthier for the church members to hear different perspectives rather than just one person and it also shows that the pastor is not a control freak. If he was he would be hesitant to share the pulpit. It is also healthier for the pastors to be able to hear what others are saying in order to grow spiritually themselves. That way they can be accountable to the other pastors and not just be a dictator. If you know of a large church where the pastor refuses to share the pulpit be sure he is a dictator. Having more than one preacher is a healthy sign especially in a large church. The pastor I have worked with projects on at Calvary is extraordinarily humble so much so that he would be embarrassed at being named in a review so I won't name him. I worked under him on some volunteer projects and his leadership is what made them run smoothly. He had respect for all of the volunteers and didn't feel he had to control us or even know much about us in order to trust us to do our jobs. At many churches these days the control issue is big. If you don't let them control you then you are called rebellious. I am referring to churches you would know of if you are a Christian in NYC. I never experienced this at Calvary. Volunteering here was always an uplifting experience. Calvary is spiritually and socially solid. For my non conformist personality denominational churches seem too restrictive with their man made rules and regulations that have nothing to do with God but rather tradition. Calvary did not come across that way at all. The congregation seems to have freedom and is warm and friendly. They seem to be less self absorbed than many other large congregations in NYC. Many large churches in NYC have this attitude that you go to church and don't dare reach out to anyone because they have their own lives. Calvary doesn't seem that way. My volunteer work with them was from 2001 -2009. So I was able to observe how they function with each other over the course of many years. It is kind of silly to me to read 5 star reviews of other churches I have seen here by visitors to a church who may be touched by the music or theater of it all or the pastors charisma but know nothing of what goes on in the day to day functions of the church. I happen to know the inner workings of a few of those churches and I know they are at best cult like in terms of how they function. But if you attend the service as a visitor all you see is the production they put on. Calvary is pretty basic and sincere from what I have seen and by basic I mean no theatrics to fool you. Unlike many other NYC churches Calvary is not known for their pastor so it is not man focused but God focused. I have been a Christian after being an agnostic for years since the 1980's. I have been to many churches in NYC and know people at most popular churches in NYC due to my volunteer work. I have never heard anything bad about the church and it is the only large church other than Evangel I haven't heard anything bad about in the last 20 plus years that I have been a Christian. For that they get 5 stars. There are no scandals here unlike many of the other large churches in NYC. Here is a list of the ministries they offer. His wife is such a prayer warrior and I apprecilike his entire family. Full gospel church with an amazing praise and worship session lead by Rev. Steven Carey. The music is to die for, too bad Yelp has stopped allowing me to upload videos for a while now. (Only me?) It was communion Sunday and a pleasure being in a house of the Lord to partake. My only issue was the congregation isn't as welcoming as the many Churches I've been to. Usually it's a hug fest and a "thanks for coming are you gonna be back?" type of welcome vibe. At this one many in the Church (not all) were cold. Not during service or no it was all fire then! But I received some weird stares and even limp hands when we gathered for prayer. I'm posting how I felt as a first timer here in the hope that members read this and become more cognizant, a bit more open/welcoming to newbies. Don't be shy, we made a choice to be here, we WANT to be here so help bring us closer to God by your acts of kindness rather than words. Start with a simple smile.....Even I had to be the one to make the first move with an Usher who was stationed there to GREET folks. Saints, we gotta to do better. I'm definitely coming back though. And that hearty handshake as I was leaving from Rev. Blondo made up for his congregation's blunder. Pun? Maybe. The End.

If your looking for a spirit filled church and a pastor that preaches the gospel of Jesus, then you've found the right church. These days, many churches are prosperity churches where money talks and is what makes most decisions within those walls. This church is different. They don't tell you what you want to hear but tell you what you need to hear!

They would stick to their same methods of worship and did not like change. When I attended the Journey I was greeted by many smiling faces which was great! When my family is in town I attend the Journey with them every time. Each time, I have had such a great experience. I really enjoyed hearing Kerrick preach. His messages are unique, they address topics that I have not heard before. I really liked his message on Prayer. His message notes allow you to follow along and keep something to recall what was discussed that Sunday. I live in the Bronx and I don't like to travel into Manhattan a lot. So, being able to watch live from the comfort of my own home makes things a lot easier. It is a wonderful church and I really do enjoy attending. I definitely recommend attending the Journey so that you may experience it for yourself!
