Upper North Shore. New Liquour Licencing laws. A smart Lawyer who obviously knows both. Voila ! Kiplings ! The old garage site near the station at Turrumurra is now a very neat bar and small plate food joint. Service is per young people who have somehow been imbued with a sense of service, pride, and fun. How does a lawyer do THAT ? Food - absolutely fantastic ! Crab on toast, quail lolipops, octopus, prawns, mushroom and truffle tarts, the food is brought out fast and it is very very good, and this is the first night! I think the younger north shore people will find the cost acceptable if not areyouserious cheap. At tonight's setting there was an even mix, perhaps 60:40 oldies : youngies. The space has been done brilliantly, I only wish they had left the outside looking like a garage but that might have been pushing it a bit. Delightful bar for great food and drink. Fried Chicken Salad is exceptional - chicken was tender and moist - batter was crispy and well balanced flavour. The chicken worked well with the Asian salad - lots of variety in the salad which was amazing. The fish and chips was also very good. Chips were nice and crispy. The portions were perfect - on the moderate side for big eaters. Their selection of beer is very good as well. Service was exceptional and staff are friendly and come across as happy to be working there. They have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. We were lucky with the weather so we sat outside. It's nice there is now a great social spot for locals. There is free street parking but depends on when you choose to dine. It's just next to the train station. Arrived at 445pm with really high hopes - we had dropped our 10 year old for a music lesson over the road and stood outside hoping for a rare 'date' together: a glass of wine, a chat. Opening time was 5pm, doors were closed, no worries, It was windy and rainy but licensing laws being what they are ... we understood. We waited. We waited. 5:03. 5:05. Finally a guy wanders up to the bar area, looks at us while mumbling a conversation into his mobile and raising his eyebrows at my obvious reference to the time. He raises his eyes non-commitedly. We wait. We wait. We watch. He is not looking like he is interested in making a move to open up, so we wander off. He watches us, he makes no move to open the doors. It is 5:10pm. Get stuffed, Kiplings. Displaying this sort of arrogance when you don't even have a reputation in the region is death. We walked up to a fantastic and attentive little tapas bar on Pac Hwy and they were lovely. While our son plays drums, we'll spend $80 a week on tapas and Spanish wine. read more

So excited to have a real life wine bar... In Turramurra! The fit out of the place suggests very good things. It's always busy which means it's hit the spot among locals - we're all happy that we don't have to trek into the city or Crows Nest for a small bar experience anymore. Great wine list, which is reasonably priced. Overall, the initial vibe of this place gets two thumbs up. However two things really spoil it. Firstly, it's unbelievably loud inside - even when the night is winding down and it's only 50% full, you really have to yell to get over the crowd noise and house music. Secondly, though the food is priced at what you'd expect for a trendy North Shore hideout... it's really disappointing in quality and portion size. First, we ordered the cheese platter, which was nice, but very undersized for $14. Then the trio of dips came out, and I could swear the dips were just the ones you buy from Coles served with some crackers. Finally, we had a pizza which was very small and way too cheesy. I really want to like this place but the menu needs some work before it will do it for me! That said, I'll be back because you can't beat a 3 minute walk home... read more

Turramurra needed a place like this. I'm not sure they even have a pub, so to have an old corner garage turned into a wine and cocktail bar is a major neighbourhood plus. It's big inside. There are ordinary indoor tables, some sofas around a fireplace, and a bunch of tables in what was the old forecourt, now enclosed in plastic sheeting (and possibly open to air in warmer weather). It's all clean and new-looking, with a bit of a industrial-chic nod to the previous function (they've left in some of the roller-door apparatus, for instance). They've got more than just the standard beers (e.g., Matilda Bay Ruby Tuesday Amber Ale) and an OK wine list. I didn't try any cocktails. They do bar snacks during the day, and bigger meals after 6pm. The snacks were tasty but definitely on the small, snacky side. The prawn and chorizo pizza was flavourful but only had an OK crust, and wasn't much more than 5 or 6 bites, at $12. The staff were excellent, and happy with either bar or table service. It was an easy place to meet up during the day with plenty of residential parking around and not too crowded inside. I'm told it gets pretty mobbed in the evenings, being the only decent drinking spot around. read more

We've been screaming out for a venue like this on the Upper North Shore so it was exciting to see Kiplings open. Fit out looks great & staff are welcoming. We booked for dinner later this week when we dropped in for a coffee this morning. Hope the food is good because the coffee was VERY ordinary. These guys need to get a decent barista fast or the buzz of a potentially great new venue is going to become a real disappointment. I would normally have waited to post a review after I've eaten here but the standard of the coffee warranted a comment. Will expand on my review soon... Had dinner with friends here Thursday night & had a great night. Staff were great, food was delicious, nice drink selection & the vibe was fantastic too. This is 2 reviews in one. We went the Sunday before last, the opening week and it was awesome. We had cod fritters, oysters, Gorgonzola pizza, crispy chicken wings, wagyu beef with horseradish. The wine was also excellent as was the service and the atmosphere was fantastic. The creme caramel was to die for. I couldn't wait to go back which we did last Sunday. It was completely opposite to the previous week. It was so loud. One of the waiters was playing guitar and singing. He was very good mind you. It was good when he finished so we could have our family dinner and chat but the recorded music was so loud it was impossible to hear. My 20 year old son even came away with a headache. The food was pretty average too. The chicken wings were so different to the previous week. They weren't cooked enough and the skin was sloppy. Same with the quail lollipops. Yuk. For some reason the oysters were taken off the menu completely which is a shame as they were a standout dish. They had run out of creme caramel too. I was excited to maybe have this place as our coffee place so popped in for coffee which was really disappointing. $4 for a very average coffee. It's a great place for a wine bar and beer on tap. We won't be back for the food though. read more

My boyfriend and I go here on a regular basis. The gnocchi is to die for !! Can get quite noisy so is better for dates than for group bookings if you want to have good conversation. Great atmosphere and polite staff otherwise read more

It looked kinda nice tonight... a spattering of patrons. Several staff all chatting in the middle of the floor. The time, approximately 9:55pm. I walked straight in to the restaurant to join my friends for a birthday celebration. Bearing in mind this brasserie is my local and I have eaten there many times, I was astounded when refused service. Yes, I have had a few beers tonight but I was very much in control. Nevertheless I was there to see my friends, so sat sipping on the water (i had to ask for) and chatting. 10 mins in I'm told the manager has been monitoring me and I'm asked to leave. Despite quite sound discussions I wasn't really given a valid reason. The manager didn't seem to want to speak. I left of course, not one to make a scene. I walked the hundred meters back home. Vowed never to spend a cent there again. Oh, and actually to be fair.... reconnected to yelp especially to leave this review. The food is great, sharing plates. The mini cheeseburgers and tacos are awesome! A great wine selection. Love the décor. Only minus I would say is that you cannot book a table and it is literally turn up and pounce on the first available seat that you find. There is also very little standing/waiting room to get a table as the bar is right at the front door. I guess this is only a gripe if you turn up at the very busy times. We were there at 7pm but by 8pm it had settled down and was much easier to get a seat. read more

Came back for another visit and just as good the second time around. This time tried the Mini eye Fillet with pancetta, 5 cheese arrancini balls, and tempura vegetables with a bottle of primo estate Merlot which was good. Service still very quick with each round. Great location, very convenient, exactly what Turramurra needs. The bar itself is very on trend with the industrial fit out most Sydney small bars are going for these days, but in saying that the furniture looks too shiny and new to nail it (all in time I suppose). Staff were great, very friendly and accommodating and the overall atmosphere in the bar was spot on. Food was really enjoyable and I believe reasonably priced. However and this is the reason for my two star rating, $8 for a beer and not even a full schooner at that, you have to be joking. I am aware it is the Upper North Shore but I don't even pay that in the small bars in the city that pioneered this trend. Acknowledging supply in the city obviously breeds competition which in turn drives prices down to a more acceptable level, but $8 for less than a schooner on a Wednesday night, is something that will keep me away from Kiplings in the future. I was looking forward to checking Kiplings out and I am glad I did, but I definitely won't be recommending it as a watering hole for drinks after work, but maybe that's just not the crowd that Kipling's is going for. read more

Attractive looking pub. We visited for lunch yesterday I got the Alaskan crab with pasta and my husband got the fritters with crab. Disappointed we should have selected steak or fish. The pasta was of the packet variety and the crab frozen, I didn't like it and not worth the $26 price tag. The fritters and cab had no texture other than mush and unfortunately my husband felt a bit off when we arrived home. The waitress was of the usual standard in Australia.. We will give it another go however, with a different menu selection. read more
