Came across this place kind of by accident while driving through Johnson City. What a nice, unexpected gem. They offer wine tastings from wines around the world - not just Texas Trail wines. And they have rotating art installations, some of which were just uber cool when we stopped in (please see pics). The proprietor's Warren and his wife (sorry, I didn't get her name) were very welcoming and took time to show us around. We will definitely be back! Wine and art without pretentiousness. Really enjoyed visiting this little hidden gem. The storefront was a bit misleading w/t Kirchman Gallery on the doors & Taste Wine & Art on the street signage but all that was needed was to step through the doors. After taking care of some passport needs at the wonderful Johnson City courthouse I was in need of some refreshment! Noticed the neon open sign glowing in the window & wine on the sign so I was drawn in to this cool little dive/art/wine tasting haven! I was welcomed by a very nice gentleman who could see my need almost immediately for a sip of red wine! I explained my love for dry reds & he opened a bottle of Zinfandel that rocked my world! The tasting was free w/t the purchase of a bottle wine which I knew would be the way I would go. He did not hesitate a bit about opening a new bottle for me to try like many wine tasting rooms seem to do to you especially on weekdays. The wines I tried were very nice & not local wines at all but wines from all over the world which can be a refreshing change. Please don't get me wrong I do love my Texas wines but sometimes a girl has got to explore the world! 1. Ask if you can explore the outdoor area. 2. Do try the chocolates especially prepared to go w/t the wines. 3. Dive into the art collection w/t a glass of wine in hand. 4. I am so thankful this little place exists & the owners share it with all who decide to visit! read more

My husband and I attended the After Dark Arts Festival '06 in November, and this was one of the stops of the festival. Here, we got a free print that's a beautiful watercolor in a vineyard. We saw these awesome prints of one artist who was going to give a talk, but had left for a few minutes to go to the next gallery on the tour, so the owner of the gallery showed us, because she was really nice like that. The artist used a digital camera, would go out into the desert, and set up all these crazy lights with colored gels, then took pictures when there was a full moon, so it'd look like a burning bush/neon pink tumbleweed, etc., in the middle of the regularly colored desert at night. They were pretty incredible, but too expensive for us to buy one. This gallery overall was interesting, a cool mix of high art and small town. read more

If you are up in Johnson City there are 3 things that you have to do. This is #1 of the 3. We stopped in here a while back because the sign said "Wine Tasting." We were greeted by a surly old man that asked us if we were there to "taste" wine or just to drink it. I assume that he could see the confusion on our faces, so he explained that if we just wanted to drink it, he would pour us some and let us do that, but if we wanted to "taste" it he would put us through his "Wine 101 Course." We, obviously, chose to taste. He proceeded to walk us through the reasoning for swirling the glass, how to properly smell the wine, the proper way to taste it and a few other steps to get the full experience and pick out all of the little nuances of the wine. It was very informative and we really enjoyed it, and learned to appreciate wine even more. He has a "Wine 201" as well, but I don't think I am ready to disappoint him by failing that course yet. read more

This art gallery is also a wine tasting bar. Well, not exactly a bar, but he does sell wine and have tastings. We were looking for one last stop before going back to the hotel and this was the only place open. Johnson City isn't a happening place on a weeknight, it seems. We enjoyed tasting here, but just couldn't find the right one to buy. Not for lack of trying, though! You could walk around and look at the art while sipping the generous sized portions he poured, but we mostly stuck close to the bar and chatted. I would go back again, he was friendly and the atmosphere was pretty nice. read more

My only connection is that I have bought several pieces of art work and a piece of jewlery from them..We have also perchased wine. This is a delightful place to taste wine and see ever changing art. Kirchman Galleries 1 and 2 are both just lovely. As an interior designer in Houston, I love to find that little out of the way place that has that extra little "something" for my clients. Kirchman Gallery is that place. The shows are always casual and comfortable, the owners, delightful, and the atmosphere is the perfect combination of gallery and home. Be sure to check out the sculpture garden in the back - the view is breath taking as is the art. Everything from jewelry to outdoor sculpture is available at this small jewel in the Hill Country and their selection changes rapidly. An absolute must see. Johnson City is a quick trip from Houston and a great way to spend a day, so go! read more

A delightful oasis of art in the Hill Country that is full of wonderful paintings, photographs, prints, sculptures, glass, chandeliers...everything. Susan and Warren are warm, knowledgeable and helpful, so there's nothing intimidating about it. There's work by new & exciting local talent and by fabulous established artists. We found some beautiful pieces that are very special. Coupled with some wine-tasting and then dinner at the Silver K Café, a visit to Kirchman Galleries made for a lovely day. read more
