Kismet is a convenient location for lunch near the Univ of Waterloo campus. A decent variety of Bangladeshi dishes for meat eaters and vegetarians, with daily specials. Food is tasty and spicy so beware! I would not recommend anything higher than 2 chili's for anyone not feeling too adventurous. Atmosphere is casual and service was friendly and attentive. The Chicken Samba and Chicken/Vegetable are both well spiced but the rice was honestly quite dry. I would get only the pita in the future and overall it was a good experience. read more

This place is pretty good! I've been meaning to try it for quiet some time now and I finally did. I ordered the butter chicken with rice (comes with rice/naan). The butter chicken sauce itself tasted really good! However there were only about 3/4 pieces of chicken in the plate which was a total bummer. Also the sauce isn't enough for the amount of rice you get.. I wish they would separate the rice and sauce in different packaging. The rice texture was also very different.. It wasn't grainy, I feel like the rice pieces were all broken so it felt and looked like little spheres instead of rice grains... lol Overall the butter chicken was really good! A little pricey for the amount of food you get ($10.50) but the taste is worth it :) The placement of the restaurant in the university plaza is a little secluded and I feel like that's mainly why not a lot of people come here but I would recommend trying it at least once! read more

Such a gem in the university plaza. First of all the greeting from the man working the cash is always so thoughtful. I love the fact that it is family run. The food options are endless. Relatively cheap for what you're getting. I have tried multiple vegetarian dishes and chicken dishes. All flavourful. They came speedy too. The mango lassi is truly the best. I've been here several times to try out their dishes by spice level (mild to very spicy). For this visit we ordered the chicken samba, which is one of the very hot dishes on their menu. It comes with about 6 pieces of chicken covered in the samba sauce, as well as two big slices of naan bread. The chicken proportions are small but the overall dish tasted homemade and quite flavourful. Plus, our server came by to refill our water multiple times throughout our meal as he knew we couldn't take the heat well haha. For the price of $9.95 you might get your taste buds burned off, but it's well worth it. The service is always quick and friendly here. It was very flavourful and hearty. Eating in I got the Chana masala with rice - again, I found it to be very flavourful. The dish seems pretty healthy and light, and is priced reasonably (around $7). Would not recommend to anyone at all. Food here is absolutely terrible. I tried the paneer and girlfriend tried the butter chicken, and both of us had negative experience. First of all the food arrived relatively cold which was a disappointment. Not sure if they are just reheating old food or what... Secondly the butter chicken and the paneer had the exact same sauce base and the only reason we could tell is because the sauce had a strong taste of coconut in it. I strongly believe the use premade indian sauces in bottles available at grocery stores and warm it with chunks of meat to call it a dish. The taste of the food itself was at most mediocre. It lacked spice and the flavour was just overpowered by coconut. Lastly, something which was not too big of a deal but just showed they don't care about their customers. We sat and ate at the restaurant for about 40 minutes and the servers never came to ask about our meal or offer to refill our glasses of waters. Just poor service in general. As an Indian with years of experience trying different types of Indian food, this was one of my worst experiences. I really hope the restaurant takes steps towards fixing these issues. read more

Kismet is probably my favourite Indian restaurant near UW. I have gotten the spicy butter chicken twice from Kismet and it is actually properly spicy unlike a lot of the white-washed Indian restaurants. They give you an option of naan or rice and they are both good options. read more

There is a new dimension to eating when spiciness comes at play. Enter the Bangalore Chicken from Kismet. Honestly, I only came here for this dish. I was told it was next level spicy so there I was. In the menu, there she was, scribbled something along the lines of "only for the daring" $13. Feeling rather daring, I ordered my spicy with a side of naan. The naan tasted decent, its been so long now that i forget the exact details but it was definitely naan like. Some where in-between very-good and excellent. It's not great enough to write a paragraph about so it cannot get an outstanding. Now comes the main feature, the Bangalore Chicken. First off, It punches you in the face the second you open the lid. It came as a hellish ocean of spicy with a few bites of chicken breast lurking within the depths of the bowl. At this point you will be tearing up for two reasons. One, because food is beautiful thing. Two, because its physically demanding to stare at. Now remember, I had to actually eat it . So I rip off some 'very good' naan, dip it the lava, then into the mouth it goes ... gg. I got rekt that day (and night). I feel like this place does not get as much attention due to positioning. It's a bit off to the side in the corner of the plaza and it doesn't have a really flashy sign to catch passersby-ers attentions. Personally, I really enjoyed the food here. The portion sizes are a decent amount if you're not looking to be stuffed, just enough to be satisfied. Their food tastes less artificial then other places I go to. Almost carries a home-cooked feel to it. I'm Chinese, so I can't really judge on authenticity, but it seemed legit to me. :) read more

We had: Tandoori Chicken with basmati rice, salad & mint sauce, Chicken curry with basmati rice and Brinjal Bhaji (Eggplant curry) with naan. We ordered the curry dishes with medium spice and it still had a bit of spiciness but we want to try it with more spice next time. The two curries had their unique taste. It was rich and flavourful, yet not overpowering. The tandoori chicken was seasoned well, very flavourful. Although one chicken leg was spicier than the other. The naan bread was very good. I don't like food that is too greasy so I was happy to bite into naan that was soft and chewy and did not have much butter left on the surface. The basmati rice tasted good - just your typical basmati rice. The restaurant is clean and the staff are very friendly. Service was good. The portions were okay. Expect rice or naan to take up more of your plate than the chosen dish (for the all day lunch specials anyways). However, we were full and we will definitely be visiting again! Also, there are lots of vegetarian options! Please note that if you want to pack up your leftover food you need to pay extra for the take-out boxes! This is a really great place to try out curries within the Waterloo region. I believe that this is the only Bangladeshi restaurant there is in Waterloo and it was the best representation of that particular cuisine. It is conveniently located in the university plaza too so it is a great place to walk to. The staff there is friendly and the place has a pretty good ambience that is good for a typical ethnic restaurant. One of the best things is that a lot of their curries have slight variations of spiciness in them. If you are one to hate spicy food, their butter chicken is the best bet. Otherwise there is not much to eat for people who cannot tolerate spice as most of their meals have varying degrees of spiciness. For those who love spicy food, try out their samba curry, which is rated 3 chillies (most spicy) on their menus. One of the employees told my friend that nobody was able to finish the samba completely. One bad thing however is that $10 for a plate of butter chicken with 4 chunks of chicken breast and rice may not be the best value for money. Overall a great place to eat out but with issues regarding lack of variation of less spicy foods and the seemingly overpriced food. read more

I've had great curries in south Asia, and was expecting better here going by the ratings on Yelp. But turns out that ratings can lie. The food is great, but if you order your choice of meat and steamed rice, you'll get 4-5 small pieces of meat and a whole lot of sauce and rice. That's not value for the price they're charging. It's cheapness on part of the restaurant. A decent restaurant does not skimp on meat when that's the main order. And if they call themselves a Bangladeshi place, then its a shame really, because in that country even a small eatery would do better portions of meat. I would recommend going to other Indian restaurants, most of which are within a short driving distance. read more

Do not order rice. I ordered the Kashmiri Chicken with basmati rice, and when it came, I eagerly tucked into the rice while I let the chicken cool a bit. As an Indian, I've eaten rice my entire life, and I have never had rice that bad. It tasted like it was refrigerated overnight and then microwaved before serving, or just severely undercooked. When I told the waiter and asked them to substitute for naan, he said something to the effect of: "Your rice is fine. It's the same rice everybody in the restaurant is eating. You can order naan on your own if you want." So I just ate the chicken by itself (which was okay, but I wasn't expecting much from plaza food). Five minutes later, the waiter came back with free naan, which was, admittedly, quite good. All in all, I might go back, but I'll always get the naan over the rice. read more

I'm not too familiar with different type of curry, and Kismet makes Bangladesh style curry. I have tried many different curry places in Toronto, Seattle, New York, etc. and my favourite is definitely Kismet. Their chicken curry, chicken mushroom, matah panir(?) (the one with beans and cheese pieces) with their home made hot sauce are my favourites. Compared to near by curry place (Auntie's kitchen) I definitely prefer this place, because they simply have better quality food. Some might like Aunties kitchen's overwhelming amount of food for their price, but I definitely prefer the Kismet's taste over Aunties' more food for the price. read more

Me and my husband have been coming regularly here but one time we brought our niece along, she have a special diet so she brought her food with us so we can eat together, as soon as we enter the restaurant the old guy (probably the owner) have been looking mad at the box of food my niece was holding, while waiting for our food and as soon as my niece open her box the guy at the cashier yelled out and said "outsider food is not allowed here!" and everyone in the room look at our direction, we were really embarrassed and I tried to explain but the guy kept yelling "it's the rule, you should see it posted outside!" so we ask to take away our food instead and even that he was so rude! He could have approached us quietly and we can understand that, but to yell in the room full of people is not acceptable. We will not go back to this place, there are better places to go like Aunty's Kitchen. With our experience I will not recommend this place to our friends or co workers. read more
