I'm going to make a bold statement right now..this is the absolute best BBQ I've ever had. We've…read morepassed Michael D'z BBQ every time on our way to and from Bucees in Florence, SC and every time we say 'next time we're stopping there'. Well today, 4 years later of saying that, we stopped. It's a small 'food truck' (but it doesn't move from this spot), and I believe the smoker in the front is where eveything is made. The smell is unmistakeable and you can take it to go or eat inside a covered area that has booths and even a pool table. They sell farm fresh eggs and other various produce, flavored honeys and bottle of bbq sauce. What we ordered.. 1/2 rack ribs - don't even know where to start with how tender, fall of the bone the ribs were, with a perfectly spicy bbq sauce 1/2 lb sliced brisket - this is their best seller and my lord, I entirely understand why 1/2 chicken - hubs loves chicken and this was like a mutant because it was gigantic and not overly smokey, but just right dipped in the rib sauce A small container of potato salad - had I known how truly delicious this was going to be, I'd definitely have gone bigger. Next time!! It was a tad sweet but balanced perfectly with relish. I have no problem traveling for quality.. this spot is about 1.5 hours away from Myrtle beach where we stay, and worth every minute of the drive. Best of all, I got to meet Mike!! He's a southern gentleman, a blast to chat with and I cant wait to go back. If you're traveling south on 95 through SC, it's a couple miles off the Bucees exit, I suggest you take the detour and give it a try!!!!

It's the work of chef Elliott Moss, a Florence native who spent two decades building his reputation in Asheville, where he earned James Beard nominations for Best Chef Southeast in 2013 at The Admiral and again in 2017 as co-owner and pitmaster of Buxton Hall Barbecue. He came home to open this place with local partners Tim Norwood and Cooper Thomas. He's since also been recognized by Southern Living for the Florence spot. The whole hog is smoked over pecan wood in a custom pit right beside the dining room, sourced from local pasture-raised hogs. I had the giant pit-smoked pork steak -- slow-smoked, vinegar-pepper mopped, excellent. Sides were the BBQ hash and rice and the collard greens; the rice and mushroom gravy is also worth getting. Being attached to Seminar Brewing means a full lineup of house beers on tap alongside the barbecue. There are pool tables in the lounge for hanging out after eating, and soft serve ice cream to close things out. A serious pedigree behind the pit, backed up by the food -- whole hog barbecue, a working brewery, and a laid-back lounge setup all in one place.
