The canapes were very nice, they were exactly what we ordered, but the sandwiches that we ordered had nuts in the bread, this was despite the fact that in a meeting with Sue we stressed we had dietary requirements, and I the Groom, has a serious nut allergy. This was very annoying however we made our complaint and the next round of cakes came out, they were very nice and there was more than enough, however the plates came out with Florentines which were mainly almonds. This was not what we ordered, it was not in the menu we agreed on, it was not in the contract. When I questioned Sue on 20/08 in a phone call, there was no actual apology or what I would consider an apology. There was complete denial over the conversation regarding nuts, Sue refused to speak to us in person at her premises and insisted that we go to the wedding venue instead, Sue believes it is our fault for not informing the venue even though she was contracted for the catering and the venue has no power in this situation. This part is totally bizarre, I have spoken to the venue and they are clueless about the actions of Sue Le Bonne. Sue did however remember that one guest has a cherry allergy and promised that this individual would get plain scones, in the end he ended up with no cherry (as did everyone else) unfortunately he suffered from nuts allergies and received the same nutty bread and Florentines too. Sue made it clear that she did not know, however she also made it clear that the Florentines were in a separate box and there was no cross contamination, but why do you need to worry about cross contamination if you know don't know about the nut allergy??? Please note that the above information is based on fact which can be proved with documentation and a recorded phone call.

The slightly unassuming Beech Inn, Chorlton, is Jackie and Barbarella's (the very cool Silver Bullet trailer all the food is served out of) full time home and parked up in the beer garden. Food is ordered from the hatch and can be eaten either in the beer garden or, thankfully (because Manc doesn't have the climate of California unfortunately), inside the pub. The menu consists of a number of regular dishes such as pad thai, dal, beef rendang and jungle curry as well as regularly changing specials to keep you on your toes. Having tried pretty much all the food at various times I can quite happily proclaim everything to be amazing. The ingredients are all locally sourced where possible and the meat and fish are higher welfare, something that is very important to Jackie. Everything is freshly made and the flavours are just fantastic, a true sign of the passion in Jackie's cooking. The food is also exceptional value with dishes such as the rendang (one of my favourites) priced at around the £6.50 mark with the portions being pretty darn generous. Don't wait until summer, this is definitely a year round beer garden treat!

My favourite is the lentil dal and even though the chef is vegetarian meat eaters are well catered for here. The beef rendang, which comes various ways including over rice, with flatbread or in a bun as a sloppy joe, is delicious. If you really like heat then ask the staff for extra fresh red chilli on top, they will happily oblige. It's not always on but the chai latte is warming and delicious so make sure you order it if it's available. A trip to this trailer for an authentic street food experience is something you just won't get anywhere else in South Manchester. The owner has travelled extensively across Asia and it really shows in the food. It's not like anything I've tasted in a restaurant in the UK. Shortly after I arrived, my coworker told me that the place used to be a mental institution/hospital. I'm not sure how you'd react to that, but I kind of loved it and spent my free working minutes on the web, trying to learn about potentially haunted rooms and ghosts of ol' crazy people. Unfortunately, no paranormal activities at this facility. So instead, I spent my evening in the gym facility, took a spin course, and sweat my butt off. The next day I tried the swimming pool and sauna as well. I was also really pleasantly surprised that the locker rooms were equipped with fantastic hair dryers ... AND ... GHD hair straighteners. Those babies cost a couple hundred euros a piece! The lunch menu on the first day included meat and chilli beans, as well as salmon.. and then of course, some salad and lots of desert. I tried the salmon with chili beans and overdosed on proteins. So so so good. The salmon was really fresh. I ended up ordering salmon for dinner as well. The quality of the food there was really fantastic. So the reason I am giving it 4 stars, instead of 5 is because it was just cold and chilly in there. The front door was kept frequently open and I think the windows aren't properly isolated, so when the temperature drops outside, you feel it right away inside. Other than that - definitely recommended. About 35 minutes from the Manchester Airpoint (36 Pound trip by cab). Give it a try!

It's only 30 mins drive from Manchester airport but ring the hotel direct and they will give you the number for a local hackney firm they use. £40 vrs £70. More beer money for me! P.S. Hackney firm are excellent and picked us up in a brand new Toyota Avensis estate. I digress. Arrived at the hotel which is situated on its own 20 acres grounds and it is a Grade II listed building. Very nice setting. It was a Monday afternoon and the reception staff were all older ladies. Unusual but you knew they knew their stuff. Being Irish we asked when did the bar close? (We have been stung before with venues like this and the bar closing early) and to our great surprise she tells us and I quote "The bar closes when you stop drinking". Hallelujah, did she realise the trouble that was going to be in store.... Now now, we did behave ourselves I promise. P.S. This used to be a mental asylum you know! Decor very tasteful and well appointed. A small bit of a labyrinth but you get to were you are going to in nice surroundings. Room has all the 4 star mod cons, room key is a funny plastic card with holes in that you leave in the lock to open. Requested an Iron and board and had them within 5 mins. Bar nice and spacious. Best thing ever was the free american pool table but had UK sized balls, better than that was the garden sized connect 4 set!! Hours of fun for all the guys at the conference. We had teams from the UK, Ireland and Holland. A great night. Bar food really nice and prices not bad either. I'd recommend the burger with bacon and cheese served with great fries and coleslaw all on a wooden chopping board (they must have broken all the plates, ha ha ). Bar staff during the next day were hard to find and slow but that's because I'm used to Irish bar/pubs speeds. If your slow in Ireland you go out of business fast! Great conference facilities and little touches like bowls of sweets (Drumsticks, Fruit Salad and Love Hearts) during the intervals make all the difference. Breakfast & Lunch in the main restaurant was really good with a large choice. All buffet style but it just meant you got more of what you liked. Nice touch is the area between the bar and main restaurant with a free coffee/tea station and bowls of more sweets, apples, bags of crisps etc. These guys know how to look after a business conference. Will be pushing for more training and conferences here.

Yes, I am bias - it was my FIRST EVER wedding (at the grand old age of 21 that seems to be a bit of a mean feat!) and, yes, it was my bf's cousin's, so of course it was a beautiful occasion. The house itself is grand and sumptuous, if a house can be, if a little let down by its driveway. Saying that, it's in the middle of Standish, so one can't expect the same long country lanes you get, well, in the middle of the country. Once inside we were greeted by traditional decorations and matching furnishings and ushered into a bar area where we were to greet the groom and additional family before moving into the ceremony space. The bar staff worked quickly and efficently, even with cash and card handling, and never seemed to be rushed. Plus, they were generous with the servings, which was what everyone seemed to need! Into the ceremony space, which was a lovely little room with a high ceiling, large window, and traditional paintings hanging on the wall. I was impressed that the decoration of the space, even though it was simple, was not ruined by these paintings or the floral carpet; the colours matched and toned the space down from its Tudor/Edwardian/Victorian essence (hey, I read American Studies, English history is not my strong point!) and made it much more romantic and intimate. Needless to say, the bride looked gorgeous and the space suited the number of people perfectly. Back out into the bar area for what our cousins across the pond would call 'cocktail hour' we received a glass of Pimm's each and started the evening celebrations! Again, the staff at Ashfield House worked around the clamour of people spilling out into the space and got quickly onto changing the ceremony space into our eating area. Obviously after a few drinks time flies but it really did feel like they did a quick job of it, keeping everyone contented but allowing the bride and groom time for photos on the grand staircase and in the gardens when they got a few spots of bright weather! Whilst eating the service was prompt and efficent, obviously on a schedule, maintaining the group's happy buzz and keeping everyone topped up with food and wine. Plates were cleared quickly, the food was hot, and the wine delicious. (After that, it all gets a bit hazy.)

It's still part of the JW Lees pub chain mind you, selling their beers (so don't be expecting anything too exciting flowing from the taps), but they've done away with the company logos on the exterior and really put lots of thought into how to target their revised customer base - diners with a slightly more modern appetite. The dining spaces are smartly designed and depending on your party's size, you could reserve a semi-private area for your meal. We sat in the conservatory restaurant area which overlooks the beer garden and Bridgewater Canal; it's a light and airy part of the building, even in winter. Their food menu is seasonal, so we got to see what they were offering for winter. We were all sold on the Sunday roasts though, which were good quality and reasonably priced at £10.50. Feeling the need to treat ourselves to dessert, we ordered sticky toffee puddings (gorgeous) and a cheeseboard. The service was a well-oiled machine; the team worked seamlessly and were very welcoming. It's promising that there's now another local eatery that you could take your whole family to and they'd be well catered for.

Since I flew a red eye into MAN, I was pretty hungry by the time the restaurant opened. The waitress took pity on me and opened a little early to take my lunch order. Had the cheese and bacon hamburger. I was starving, so it tasted fantastic. Came back here for dinner to see if my thoughts on the food would change. Had the rib eye, side salad and the cauliflower fritters. All were very good. There's also several tables outside with umbrellas over them for shade. Hotel: first hotel I've ever stayed in that doesn't have a/c in the rooms!!! Makes a little more sense, when a friend of mine in the local area said that they've been having an extraordinary streak of heat and days without rain. Regardless, in room a/c is a must! If your travel plans bring you to Rochdale, this is worth a visit.

Buffet included paella which isn't your normal buffet food but was a welcome change from sandwiches and sausage rolls! Had a quick drink in the bar which has a nice pub feel to it and a big open fire that would be perfect in winter. Breakfast was fresh and you had choice of cooked or continental or both if you were feeling hungry/ greedy but was busy at 9am on Sunday morning. It's served in the main restaurant. Heard good things about Fallen Angels Italian ( which at first i thought was a dodgy night club) restaurant so will need to come back to try that!

My mushroom risotto almost didn't contain any mushrooms, was more like a rice with a rare veg. To be fair, non-veggie dishes seemed to be better, and my starter (fried hallumi) was of a decent size.

This was the gathering after the funeral of a friend and we were a party of 50+. The foyer is now completed and is very impressive. On arrival in the decent-sized car park, one is struck by the proliferation of contemporary sculptures. These are continued inside, in the commodious and welcoming entrance, with automatic doors. We were given a large room very near the entrance and treated to ample supplies of tea and coffee with a bar in the room. There is no real ale on offer, but they do have a good selection of malt whiskies if one asks for them. The buffet provided was excellent and served by a wonderful staff. We were allowed to conduct a series of songs, dances and music (being mostly folk performers) and had a very enjoyable afternoon in the circumstances.
