Normally I listen to NPR or KPFT because I despise all the commercial radio stations out there. They play the same 25 songs and NONE of them are any good. Then I came across 103.7. They aren't "Jack" anymore, but they still play a pretty good variety of music. Gomez, Modest Mouse, Wilco, Led Zeppelin, Talking Heads, Feist, Pearl Jam, The Pretenders, Phish, Chris Isaak are just a few that I heard TODAY. None of the music fits into a a perfect little box of a genre. It's just plain good music. Most of which was on my iPod. There are no annoying DJs either. I rarely change the channel anymore except to listen to my NPR for the news. Where else do you think I get all the info so that I can know everything?

I stayed on the channel for a day or two, even enjoying it through my time in Galveston. "Houston's Only Classic Rock" continued with great tunes "Don't Stop" by Fleetwood Mac, "Sunglasses at Night" by Corey Hart, and the thumping bass of "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen. I have listened to KRBE for years, but the segment involving the bakery and the comments made about…read morearthritis were disappointing and came across as insensitive. Humor is one thing, but making light of medical conditions that many people genuinely struggle with is not entertaining to everyone. The remarks joking about arthritis and the bakery employee crossed the line from humor into unnecessary ridicule. To their credit, Cumulus Media management did respond to complaints, removed the segment from social media and podcast platforms, and acknowledged that the content was not consistent with company policy. I do appreciate that action being taken. However, what still stands out to me is that the on-air personalities directly involved in the segment have not publicly apologized to the bakery employee, the bakery itself, or the listeners affected by the comments. A sincere acknowledgment on air and on the same social media platforms where the segment was published and discussed would have gone a long way toward showing accountability and respect. Broadcasters have a platform that reaches a large audience, and with that comes professionalism and awareness. Unfortunately, this situation changed my view of the station.

But if you ask me, Q Country seems like Nashville bubble gum pop country, where it's pop music about their truck or how they love the country. Whatever happened to real country? This station is owned by Cox Media group. It's won best Country Station in the country three times, but that's always a bit like awarding themselves the best... Clear Channel sold the station to Cox Media a long time ago, and thy've been playing fewer commercials since, but it's still a lot of commercials. They rarely have any call-in contests. Why don't they play more Hank Williams? They really play more modern country than any old timey stuff that I tend to like, personally. They play a lot of the same stuff over and over and over.

During the 1960s, it simulcasted its AM parent KXYZ which played beautiful music. In the late 1960's, the format changed to Love Radio formulated by then-owner ABC Radio with the calls changing to KAUM around 1970. From 1980 through late 1986, the 96.5 FM slot for the Houston-Galveston market operated as KSRR 97 Rock FM, featuring morning radio host Moby. The station competed against the album rock format of 101.1 KLOL (and from 1986, KZFX Z-107.5 FM). From October 15, 1986, the station changed call letters to KKHT, and the hard rock-oriented format was replaced by a contemporary hit radio format known as Hit 96.5. By mid-1987, heavy competition from top 40 powerhouses KKBQ and KRBE prompted the station to morph to Adult Contemporary. The station rebranded as 96.5 KKHT From 1989, the station changed call letters to KNRJ, modifying its format to feature a heavier variety of "high-energy" dance music. This format, branded Energy 96.5, was a competitive response to two other local stations, 93Q KKBQ and Power 104 KRBE, whose Top 40 formats reflected the increasing presence of dance club-oriented tracks (catering to a then-lucrative target audience drawn to the flourishing night club scenes along Richmond Ave., and inner Westheimer Road.).
