I would say the service here is 5 star, very friendly, welcoming and homely. The views are amazing and deserve 5 stars. You get a magnificent view over the Alps as you sit out on the verandah. The menu is typical Austrian / Alpine with some nice starters, salads and mains. They also have a steak menu and a nice wine list of many Austrian wines. We decided to share a starter of seafood salad and it was huge. Nice fresh salad and prawns with a light flavour, loved it. My Alpenachnitzel was ok nothing special. I liked it and the dessert of Palatschinken (pancakes) was also ok. Food was good but nothing spectacular. There is a nice indoor restaurant for the colder months with a bar and outdoor seating for summer. Prices are reasonable and they have a nice selection of schnapps. Loved the experience and would happily come here again.

And sat down in the biergarten of Gasthof zur Mauth. Overlooking the other restaurants in the area, it was very comfortable. We had a Wiener schnitzel and spätzle for kids. Everything was delicious. The service was excellent. What I really liked is the fact that none of the dishes had French fries. In my option to many restaurant use French fries with their dishes. If you want to change , you have to pay extra. Here you have many dishes with parsley potatoes. All in all very good and comfortable dinner. And enjoyable experience.

The balcony overlooked the fortress (Festung) and is large enough for a recliner a table and two chairs. The bathroom is modern, large with two sinks and a huge walk-in shower. Comfortable bed, large closet. The bells of St. Vitus and other churches welcome the day and bid good night. The breakfast is open till 1000 and is great. Local meats, cheeses, breads, eggs, bacon, sweets, local jams, honey, espresso, cappuccino, etc. A cocktail bar is attached and a great Hoff-Brau restaurant around the corner. If you want to relax, the fourth floor has a wet sauna, dry sauna and steam room along with a small gym. A kick-back area and snacks included. Too bad there was a heat wave. The location is perfect for day trips. A few hours OR LESS to Munchen, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Berchesgaden, Garmisch, Tratzberg, etc. The garage is right under the hotel and if you're tired of getting ripped off by parking fees, it's a breath of fresh air. It's nine euros a day only if you leave. Nine euros if you park and leave the car for the entire stay. Ok, so the only reason it's not five stars is, as an American and it was HOT, I would have loved a fridge. I understand though, the hotel is "green energy" the card key turns the power on and off. No power on when you leave. It's ok though cold drinks and ice are hard to find in Europe lol.

The bar was nice and almost had a feeling of a living room with the TV's. Located a walk from the central parts of St Johann in Tirol a taxi or bus would be recommended if you arrive from the train station with luggage. If you're up for it a walk from the train station to the hotel would only take about 15 minutes and is easy to find (the hotel is located next to the main road that begins from the square in the city centre). I was staying at the hotel for two nights during a long ski weekend. Since I arrived to St Johann in Tirol late in the evening I got a call from the hotel to make an arrangement with the room key (that wasn't necessary though since I then was only about 10-15 minutes away from the hotel). The hotel has a gym and a sauna. The gym was small but did its job. I would rather have had a treadmill in the gym than a stepping machine though (maybe that's just me). When I was in the gym I was there by myself for the whole exercise, which felt like a privilege to me. After my training I went to the sauna which I during my time had all to myself and could really stretch out. Breakfast was included but not dinner (the bar was available though if you were hungry). Overall I found Hotel Explorer to be good value for money. If you want a more upscale hotel with ski-in ski-out this is not what you are looking for though. The nearest lift, which is an older chair lift, Is only about 5 minutes' walk away from the hotel (Hochfeldlifte). To get back to the hotel from the pist you need to take a red shorter slope that can be a little tricky in the afternoon if you haven't been skiing before (with smaller kids might want to take the blue pist down to the main ski center).

It is a family-run exquisit hotel with 40 rooms, a big indoor pool and an excellently designed thermal and wellness area. Bio-Sauna, Tyrol-Sauna, Sole-Steambath, Infrared-Cabin - you name it, you find it in the "Sonnenhof". The "Sonnenhof" is at the foot of the "Wilder Kaiser", one of the most impressive mountain-chains in the Alps. Here in Going you are right in the center of the largest ski-area in Austria. Kitzbühl, the famous village with the even more famous downhill-course "Streif" is just around the corner ---- and, thankfully, the price-level of Kitzbühl is also "around the corner"! One more thing absolutely needs to be mentioned: the food in the "Sonnenhof" is simply sensational. It starts with a very nice breakfast buffet, followed by a snack for lunch, a typical tyrolian "Marende Jause" in the afternoon and a brilloiant 5 course meal for dinner. And all this is included in the "Halfboard Plan".......... In closing I would like to mention that staying in the "Sonnenhof" is just PERFECT!!!! If you are looking for cosy atmosphere, excellent food and personal service - the "Sonnenhof" must not be missed!

The rooms are really well fitted out and my children loved the bed a circular double bed with a bed above it (like bunk beds), very exciting. The food was good with 4 course evening meals and free after ski snack. The hotel owner goes out of his way to provide evening entertainment as the hotel is a little way out of town. He ran a free bowling night with prizes. A winter candlelit walk through the village with Schnapps, and a trip to the ski instructors show in nearby Ellmau. I would recommend this hotel and would stay there again my self!
