I had the misfortune of being booked into one of the Klosterhotel's smallest rooms. It wasn't by choice, it was the only room left in the area that was available. I came to visit a Oberammergau but there were no rooms in town. The Kosterhotel is in Ettal, a quieter Bavarian town between Oberammergau and Garmisch. The biggest attraction in Ettal is the massive monastery which is directly across the street from the hotel. The monastery brews some of the best beer in Germany. It's also a beautiful place. If you like herbs the monastery has their own herb garden and make their own herbal teas and bitters. It also makes a variety of liquors. I visited when temperatures were in the upper 70's and low 80's. My room was on the top floor, over the restaurant's kitchen. The room was so hot it was impossible to sleep even with the windows wide open. There is no A/C in this hotel, like most of the hotels in this region. The bed was okay but not terribly comfortable and it was short and narrow! I'm 5'6 so you can imagine how a tall person would have issues with the bed. It was very clean. The staff was generally friendly. The hotel's restaurant was terrific! If you stay here make sure to have breakfast in the hotel restaurant. The breakfast buffet has tons of choices to include good old American scrambled eggs and bacon. They have a full gourmet coffee machine for espresso, lattes, and cappuccinos, but make sure you take a cup from the cup warmer under the cabinet at the coffee machine! The cups on the tables are too small and your cappuccino will flood over. There is a nice little German sign with these instructions but if you don't read German or miss it, the waitress may scold you! One of the waitresses is obviously not a morning person and was extremely unpleasant to me the two mornings I had to deal with her. She seemed more tolerant if you were German but otherwise gave everyone a miserable time. This hotel books a lot of tour bus groups so sometimes getting through the restaurant to breakfast took a while. Be prepared!
I didn't use the spa but many people said it was very nice. read more
