Tim, our host took us (two adults and three children) around the orchard on a tractor sampling for us different apples until he understood our taste preferences then steered us to the ones we liked best. One of the highlights was trying the different heirloom apples including one that was President Thomas Jefferson's Favorite. Pieper's is about a two hour drive from Northern Chicago Suburbs but well worth the trip (most pick your own orchards within an hour or so are heavily picked leaving few apples low enough for children to get plus this is located in the rolling hills - moraines region -- of Wisconsin offering very good fall colors).
