We absolutely love heading to this cellar every time we are in Wisconsin. We fill up on the curds and spreads and fly them back to AZ. Every time we are here the staff is super friendly and helpful while providing insight on cheese flavors and tastes. The Coby is amazing, and they just won a state award for it! Theresa is a small quant town, and you have a feeling of walking back in time as you enter into the store. It feels great to support the team here. The only downfall we found out this last trip is the waxed cheese our 'WI' shaped one was full of mold, and it is not even made there. That made my son sad when he broke it open when we got home to find it full of green. They are made in MI so we lost the 'local' feel on that this round. read more

This little patch of heaven is literally in the middle of nowhere Wisconsin but if you're willing to make the trek it will seriously reward you with some amazing cheese & history. The town is very small and this is located at the end of a street and I think if your not looking u would drive right past it. Once inside u will be blown away by the operation right in front of your eyes. The staff are friendly and have quite a few options to purchase as well. It is pricy but dang u can't get any fresher than this place. I've saved it to my maps so if I'm ever back and within a hundred miles I'm coming back again. read more

It was a great history lesson about the company and the process of making cheese. At the end of the tour, a cheese master comes to answer questions and you get to sample their cheese. They source what they can locally and within Wisconsin so only quality ingredients are used. We thought we were going to be able to see the operation in action and be walked around the facility. Unfortunately, the FDA or EPA or someone is cracking down on food factory tours so other than what we saw when we first walked in, there wasn't a "factory tour" which is why I give it 4 stars instead of 5. However, it is a free tour and worth doing if you're in the area. read more

When I head up to Slinger, I do my best to visit just 10 minutes north of there to one of the most Pleasant, and tiniest, creameries in the state, Widmer's Cheese Cellar. Located in a small town at the end of a residential street, right by the river, is a traditional Wisconsin home with Swiss decor outside. When you walk inside, the retail area is Tiny But loaded with cheese made right there, just to your left, down below, in the 90-year-old creamery. With historic photos in the wall, when you look at the stainless steel back down below, you can almost picture the guys making the cheese in the 1950s right before your eyes. Like many creameries in Wisconsin, widmer's is known for brick, cheddar, and Colby. You'll find a few other varieties, and you'll find the number of aged cheeses. You can't leave here without having an aged cheddar and experiencing the difference not only between small batch cheddar and your average big box retail store cheddar, but also an aged cheddar. Wow. Prices here are excellent, and if you go in the tall refrigerator he'll find some random shaped cuts of cheeses priced a fair amount lower per pound. You'll be able to taste a few cheeses and by exactly the way you want up some of them. Staff behind the counter is very helpful. Don't forget to take home a bag of cheese curds!. read more

After reading a billboard on Highway 41 we headed to this very quaint, (like in a neighborhood quaint!) family owned cheese cellar and were thrilled to see a 100 year old thriving cheese maker! The brick cheese is fabulous and is actually served up the road at the Pioneer Keg as cheese curds. They are so tasty! The cellar is located in a basement so it is not large for moving around inside but it was really nostalgic and neat to see first hand how and where cheese has been made for four generations now. Widmer's has been making cheese (and winning awards for it) since 1922. You've seen their brick cheese, brick spread and Colby in upscale stores. But have you been to their factory store in tiny Theresa, WI? Do you even Wisconsin, bro? To be fair, today was my first visit but it certainly won't be the last. We happened to see a highway billboard telling us Widmers was ahead and we thought "why not check it out?" The store is on a side street - you'd never know it was there unless you had an address and GPS. You step inside - BAM - you are IN the factory. It's tiny. The retail area is really tiny - four people will be a crowd. Persevere - you'll get your turn. In the meantime, try some samples of their delicious cheeses. If you visit during the week in the AM, you'll likely see cheese making happening by some of Widmers 22 employees. They do it old school, in their original building from the 20's and using 80-year old bricks to make their famed traditional brick cheese. We left with some Colby, some Brick (they sell slab ends for a DEAL), an award-winning brick spread and a slice of 12-year cheddar. Prices are very fair and the staff is kindness itself. If you're in your way to points north, definitely stop in for some of WI's finest. Also know that Sunday hours are seasonal so check if it's off-season before you go. read more

This establishment is quite out of the way off the highway, but they do have done good signage and you will not get lost. I highly recommend you go out of your way to pay them a visit. Their brick cheese curds are SQUEAKY nice! (If they don't squeak, that means they are not fresh and have been refrigerated. I learned that from the true Wisconsin village people. The store front has a European feel and its perched up on a hill nicely displayed and very welcoming. Has a cozy homie feel to it. I believe this used to be a house. You ring the bell for service. They also have fresh strawberries and cream and you are recommended to bring your own container. We were so happy with the quality of their cheeses that we bought a lot of the variety. This town (village of Theresa) is small but quaint and we took a little stroll down hill and close to the establishment there is a river that was quite full when we stopped by. This is a great place to stop on a day trip. You have probably noticed Widmer's at restaurants and grocery stores in the Milwaukee area. Why not get it from the source!? The store area is tiny but they manage to carry every thing you could want. There are numerous types of cheese and you can sample them. I am partial to their brick cheese, curds and string cheese. Their string cheese is easily my favorite. It's worth the drive. It's less than an hour drive and you can stock up! read more

Widmers is known for their Brick cheese, which is hard to come by in the southwest. Fortunately, they ship! We often have their 5lb mild brick shipped along with other favorites (no free shipping, unfortunately) and split it with family and friends (but they have to be really, really good friends--not everyone rates sharing the good stuff) The brick curds are delicious and different --very mild. Not everyone is a fan of aged brick --it's like a very very aggressive brie, but if you like smelly cheese, you'll love Widmer's. I'm a die hard fan! We drove up from Milwaukee to participate in the "cheese tour" advertised on their website. It wasn't quite what I expected, but it ended up being a really cool experience anyway. We walk in the door, and we are like - IN a cheesemaking factory. There is a little shop area with cheese for purchase, but taking up most of the room are big vats of curds and whey, and men adding enzymes and taking curds by the bucketload to put into brick-shaped molds. After a few minutes of waiting, we were given hairnets and escorted back through a few refrigerated rooms, where we stood and watched a 10 minute DVD narrated by Joe Widmer, the current company prez. He explained the process of making brick cheese, colby, and cheddar, and we got to see it on the DVD. Then a jolly man who has worked at Widmer's for something like 29 years comes out with a plate of samples (biiiiig pieces of cheese!) and answers our questions. It was funny, Joe Widmer kept walking in and out of the room and since I'd just seen him on the DVD, I kept thinking he was famous and wanted to be like "omg!! it's you!" funny how you see someone on TV and suddenly they seem like a big deal. Anyway. So after our little Q+A, we stood back in the first room where we came in and watched basically what we'd just seen on the DVD - I guess we had good timing! We watched them drain the whey, add stuff to the curds, stir up the curds, and put them in these brick-shaped molds, then they put real bricks on top (bricks dating back 80 years or so to the original Widmer, Joe's grandpa) and we really got to see how it was done! We bought some curds, some aged cheddar, and some brick cheese. Already sampled the curds, can't wait to try the rest! Anyway, don't go expecting a real "tour," per se, but you see so much more than just the DVD! We were just feet away from them watching them make the cheese, which was really cool. It's out-of-the-way, but if you like cheese and you're in the area, it's definitely worth a stop. read more

Went today, July 25, for some fresh cheeses and to try some of their different sausages. Bought about $30 of various cheeses, including a bag of cheese curds. Paid and outside I opened the cheese curds. NO SQUEAKING! Looked at the manufactured date on the bag and it was July 19th, 6 days old. I went back inside and asked for some fresher ones and the lady told me those are fresh. Showed her the date and she told me to warm them in a microwave and they will be better. Been here around half a dozen times in the last 30 years, practically every time I've been in their part of WI. This is located about an hour from Milwaukee, and worth making a stop there. Their relatively small shopping area is off on the side of a large room where they're actively working on the cheese during the week. We picked up a few different things and had a nice picnic nearby. Widmer's is the best cheese in America. There's no other way to put it. People wouldn't drive to some random 2,000 person town in the middle of nowhere, WI to go to this tiny shop and pay ridiculous amounts of money for this cheese if it wasn't. And it's worth every last penny. Their cheese curds are squeaky good. Their aged cheddars 2 year old, 4 year old and 10 year old are to die for. It's also fascinating to think this food I'm about to consume was made 10 years ago. But with time the cheese aged into a perfect taste. I was shocked when I finally went here, how small the place actually was. But they have all sorts of different cheeses, beef sticks, summer sausage, curds, etc. And free samples. Widmer's Cheese Cellars has one of the best brick cheeses and one of the best brick cheese curds that I have ever tasted in Wisconsin. Their Brick Cheese can be used for all kinds of recipes and is a great melting cheese. Their cheeses are premium cheese so you pay a small premium for their products. They do have a small storefront in the cheese factory when you can watch the cheese makers make cheese while you order from their selection. Customer service can be lacking some days but the free samples make up for it. When my family comes to visit from various places around the U.S. we usually end up taking a trip here so they can bring some cheese back home with them. read more

Great family run business. I live in Jersey and order on line. The brick cheese they make is nothing like the boring other bricks. It's one of America's most pungent cheeses. I fopund their name in a cheese encyclopedia published in England. The dip using the brick is mellower and people can't stop eating it. I always order some of their excellent cheddar as well. Thanks to an earlier posting mentioning that think you are walking into a store but it's really a full blown factory. The actual retail space is the size of a walk in closet. While you wait for the tour to begin they have 8 different cheeses that you can sample. The tour begins and they take you to a shipping and receiving room with an old TV that has the owner giving you some history. After the video we spoke to the owners son and another worker that had been there for 34 years. Both very knowledgeable and friendly. We were able to taste the curds. They dont taste like much but look gross. Then we bought some cheeses. By the way we parked in front of the houses. There are no parking signs on the other side but cars were parked there anyway. read more

I am not sure why someone would say the cheese is "very good" and then give it three stars. Perhaps it is because this is just a little, not very glamorous, basement cheese factory. Unless you go during the week, you won't see anyone making cheese either. But if what you are looking for is great, locally made cheese, rather than a touristic experience, then this is the place. Their brick is great, and any of the aged cheeses are wonderful. They have up to ten-year old cheddar. So, come for the cheese, not the atmosphere. Oh, and they usually have free samples. read more

I had a business trip to the area and I made it a special point to stop at Widmer's on my home. It was a spontaneous stop so I was a little overwhelmed by all the cheeses. I did get some and it was delicious. Two months later I had another business trip to the area but this time, I planned my stop. I prepared by visiting their website and made a list. when I got there I handed the counter clerk the list, they disappeared in the back and came back with an armful of cheeses.
