    KNBR's transmitters
    Fred T.

Recent controversial comments made by a now fired radio personality on the station reminded me I have never reviewed a radio station, let alone one that I listen too all the time. I have been a listener of KNBR for some time. I can remember when the mornings were strictly Rush Limbaugh and sports after. What an odd pairing no? As the flagship station for the SF Giants, I often will listen in the car for periods. Such is the state of radio these days that I seldom if ever actually listen anywhere BUT my car. They have made an effort to keep up with the times, and I will on occasion listen to podcasts on their app while bike riding, but its usually a car endeavor. While they acted appropriately in the case of Patrick Connor aka PCON and fired him, they also terminated the super popular Ralph Barbieri in what could only be a case of blatant age discrimination. The station actually dates back to 1922 and has been broadcasting under those call signs (and a few others) since that date. They have a sister station 1050 which either has different programing OR simulcasts. the 680 feed. The stations broadcast the San Francisco Giants, San Francisco 49ers, Stanford Cardinal, and San Jose SaberCats, and other sporting events. So if one is say broadcasting the SabreCats you can listen to talk on the other etc. The main KNBR station broadcasts at a whopping 50000 watts. I have been able to personally pick up the station in Maui at night. That far out it had a fair amount of static but it was easy to listen to a Giants game. It will vary though and line of sight plays huge. On trips down to LA you can listen as far as the Grapevine but it drops off after that. The show puts on original programing for most of the day and relies on canned network programing or syndicated national sports talk shows overnight. As with any show the hosts make all the difference. First and foremost they have one of the best Radio broadcast teems in the nation. From top to bottom they are simply fantastic. The rest of the programming: I'm seldom up in the AM and hardly ever listen to the show so I will reserve judgement. From 10-1 Its Gary and Larry: I seldom bother to listen. I simply cannot stand Gary Radnich. Not sure what it is but I'm not a fan. His partner Larry Krueger I really like and will listen to the show when Gary is on vacation. But beyond those times its a no go. Form 1-3 its Fitz and Brooks: I love these guys. They are funny, opinionated and seem to get great guests. Nuff said... 3-7 Tolbert & Lund: They are pretty good. But I'm usually doing other things at this time so don't listen as often. From 7-11 I wont comment as I hardly listen.

KNBR's streaming is horrible: multiple in-game interruptions with the same commercials over and over. I've gone back the AM feed.

Gary Radnich is probably the best talk show host in the bay area, he is especialy good with tony bruno.

I got to attend the KQED FEST of 2026. It was my first time visiting the headquarters, and the space was just dopamine inducing: open space, walls of windows, areas that just scream community cultivation. There is so much to do at KQED Fest, and this is a FREE event! There was a variety of spaces designed especially for creative kids: painting, playing, looking under microscopes. There were also a good offering for the adults: panels, presentations by NPR, and auditions for Check Please, Bay Area! And if none of that sounds interesting than feel free to take your pick of tours, a stage with local live music (by such greats as: Tiny Desk Concert winner Ruby Ibarra or the 2024 KQED Bay Area Showcase winner Misa James), bingo, and lots of great food and drinks. Of course, I grabbed a little KQED swag as a physical souvenir of the day. I'm hoping (make that manifesting) I'll attend a live taping of any of the wonderful shows filmed right there at the headquarters. Thank you for opening up this incredible space for the public to visit. Attending KQED Fest fulfilled a dream long in the making for me.

When I used to live near Albertsons (now Lucky) there used to be this guy who would sell old records across the street. Amazing collectible stuff. I scored countless Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, and other great records from him. Alot of times I would buy the records just for the record art. But after scoring some choice soundtracks, I knew I had to finally listen to my gems. After buying about close to 80 records, I figured it was time to buy a record player. So I went on craigslist and found a beautiful wooden record player console. It was and continues to be gorgeous. One of my favorite things in the world (outside of....) Nothing can really replicate the sound of slow turning vinyl. Nothing. Ipods can't do Janis Joplin justice, the way a record player can capture the rasp and angst of her voice. The great thing about this particular record player is that it also has a radio. A radio with taste. It's picky and only gets the quality stations - many of which happen to play alot of old school jams (old school is relative I guess...) One of them is Kiss 98.1. My record player radio adores 98.1. It beams as Whitney Houston, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Smoky Robinson, Prince, classic Santana, 90's Usher, and more greats (Usher's 90's stuff puts usher in this category) croon out of it's fabric covered speakers. Curled up onto my bed, I let 98.1 guide me. Last night, I pulled out all of my art supplies and began painting on an old pair of white leather funky boots, that I had bought the other day from a sidewalk sale. Once they're completed, I'm posting pictures and dedicating them to 98.1. As a tribute, to a station that continues to spread classic funk, R&B, and soul. Croon on.............

An interesting sidenote is that Tony Sandoval, who sounds like a slick used car salesman, used to be a DJ in 98.1 FM's previous incarnation, KISS. Between him, Delilah, the Morning Breeze&Lisa St. Regis, expect the bland. While they tout that they're "less stressful" music for work, they're more likely to cure insomnia. Since they play the same songs endlessly, one is capable of doing karaoke, because you can practice the words. 99.3 The Vine out of Napa has more variety, along with local news&events, and 99.7 FM has new music, and the comedy of Fernando and Greg. If you've drank too much caffeine, the Breeze is a powerful antidote. I want to know what love is, I want you to show me. My heart will go on.

Even when it turned into this Bollywood station I would still listen to it from time to time. I got a kick out of the advertisements - always the same ones - I remember this realtor speaking highly of herself - shameless promotion in her heavy accent while speaking English. So one day I'm minding my own business shuffling through all the stations frantically and I recognize NoNames voice. I couldn't believe it. No more Bollywood for me. Turns out they were on a yoga retreat. He said so himself. Right when the station returned they had the 1800 number to call in with your opinions during every ad session. Listening to it again was almost like getting in a time machine and going back ten years. I even felt ten years younger again in an instant. Who knew? Potions and lotions and botox had nothing on listening to this station. They recycled the same 15 songs and played them on a loop just like they always had. It was so familiar - very soothing. At the same time it was very very terrible - not like a train derailment - but maybe like a child scribbling some ugly piece of art. Bad but in a good way. One star for NoName. Love the guy. I remember when I met him. He looks just as you would imagine him to look from knowing his voice only. I got some concert tickets from him for knowing some band trivia questions on air. One star for Aaron Axelsen. Sound check is probably one of the only good reasons to listen. Sunday evenings from 8 - 10. New stuff. Interesting stuff. Local stuff. Its not better than Barbara Streissand but its different. All these years had passed. My Jetta now officially slowly slipped into heapdoom status. Saggy headliner, engine light, a knock here and there in the suspension and a big dent on the drivers door from when I had to take Mr Moose to the emergency room and time was of the essence. Engine still runs so smooth but the interior stinks. I'm not sure if Mr Moose did something in there or maybe the a/c evaporator core drain is clogged. It stinks and I don't think I'm going to fix it for it to pass its next smog check. I'm either going to spritz some freshner in it and dump it on CL or donate it to my favorite Cantonese radio station in San Jose. They gave me a shen yun calendar last time. I enjoyed that all year. Nothing can be depended on anymore in life except for Coupe Deville's and that 1053 button in my Jetta.
