Recent controversial comments made by a now fired radio personality on the station reminded me I have never reviewed a radio station, let alone one that I listen too all the time. I have been a listener of KNBR for some time. I can remember when the mornings were strictly Rush Limbaugh and sports after. What an odd pairing no? As the flagship station for the SF Giants, I often will listen in the car for periods. Such is the state of radio these days that I seldom if ever actually listen anywhere BUT my car. They have made an effort to keep up with the times, and I will on occasion listen to podcasts on their app while bike riding, but its usually a car endeavor. While they acted appropriately in the case of Patrick Connor aka PCON and fired him, they also terminated the super popular Ralph Barbieri in what could only be a case of blatant age discrimination. The station actually dates back to 1922 and has been broadcasting under those call signs (and a few others) since that date. They have a sister station 1050 which either has different programing OR simulcasts. the 680 feed. The stations broadcast the San Francisco Giants, San Francisco 49ers, Stanford Cardinal, and San Jose SaberCats, and other sporting events. So if one is say broadcasting the SabreCats you can listen to talk on the other etc. The main KNBR station broadcasts at a whopping 50000 watts. I have been able to personally pick up the station in Maui at night. That far out it had a fair amount of static but it was easy to listen to a Giants game. It will vary though and line of sight plays huge. On trips down to LA you can listen as far as the Grapevine but it drops off after that. The show puts on original programing for most of the day and relies on canned network programing or syndicated national sports talk shows overnight. As with any show the hosts make all the difference. First and foremost they have one of the best Radio broadcast teems in the nation. From top to bottom they are simply fantastic. The rest of the programming: I'm seldom up in the AM and hardly ever listen to the show so I will reserve judgement. From 10-1 Its Gary and Larry: I seldom bother to listen. I simply cannot stand Gary Radnich. Not sure what it is but I'm not a fan. His partner Larry Krueger I really like and will listen to the show when Gary is on vacation. But beyond those times its a no go. Form 1-3 its Fitz and Brooks: I love these guys. They are funny, opinionated and seem to get great guests. Nuff said... 3-7 Tolbert & Lund: They are pretty good. But I'm usually doing other things at this time so don't listen as often. From 7-11 I wont comment as I hardly listen. read more

KNBR's streaming is horrible: multiple in-game interruptions with the same commercials over and over. I've gone back the AM feed.

can anyone help? for the last few weeks, trying to listen to the Giants game via IHeart or KNBR site is almost impossible. seems like the commercial interruptions are on a timed basis, about every 7 minutes. the commercials come on regardless of the game status. of course, they come on between innings as usual, sometimes they don't go away and entire half innings are missed. also they come on during the inning, and block out the play by play. would appreciate any insight or ho to contact KNBR, the only provided number went to the FCC. tried to send an email to Lee Hammer, no response. read more

Ok, so I hear an Ad on KNBR for a sports betting company, get a free pick by calling this number. I dont gamble but was curious so I heard the pick and watched to see what happened. So what happened is my phone blew up with betting companies texting and texting and now calling me and being rude when I told them to take me off the list. ARGGGHHH At least 10 that I had to block stop and report as JUNK. Then the call today, guy acts like he is my friend and then asked if I want to bet on something, I tell him to take me off the list and he said something rude and hung up on me. I BLOCKED THAT NUMBER TOO. I like KNBR, have listened for decades but was shocked that they have an advertiser like this on their station. I'm a sports junkie and I like to keep my sports news (local and national) up to the minute and up to date. Murph and Mac morning show is very entertaining and they keep my commute to the BART (albeit a very short commute) a very lively one. They have a good chemistry and they give props to where it's due. They're funny, informative and tells it like it is. They have regular guests segments such as Steve Young, Ronnie Lott, Brian Jennings and Samurai Mike during the Football season. And who can top of Gary Radnich? You may not agree with everything he says, but he does keep you tuned in. Man, this guy is a Bay Area legend, and probably one of the hardest worker in the business. How can a man do his sports show late at night and his morning show right after? It's very impressive, and he's been doing it for 25 years. Oh yeah, I've met him in person several times and he's a REAL nice guy. Then you got Tom and Ralph during the afternoon. Who would've thought the Tom Tolbert would turn out to be quite a good pro in his profession? I know, he sucked as a Warrior but he's found his calling as a sportscaster. Dude runs circles around that buffoon Charles Barkley and that ancient Sequoia of a tree named Bill Walton. And Ralph is Ralph...you either like him or hate him. And Damon Bruce? I have mixed feelings about this radio station. I love sports so I listen a lot and the talent is so damn bad it makes me scream and yell at the radio! Murph and Mac are a couple of idiots and their show sucks! Gary Radnich is a complete and total douchebag and he really needs to be replaced with, I don't know, a young person who knows sports. Rod Brooks makes my head hurt! The dude is a chronic studderer and it's just annoying! I listen to him solely b/c he is the only person of color employed by this pathetic radio station. Aside from that, it's whitey central over there. Ralph and Tom (Razor and Mr. Douche) are the two worst sports talk hosts in the history of the business. Ralph sounds like Squiggy from Lavern and Shirley and uses a vocabulary fit for an English professor when his audience is 40 something men who drink Budweiser out of a can, have a high school education and drive pick up trucks! Tom, please! Damon Bruce is the one host who is awesome! Shocking right? He's an ESPN guy and a professional, not a former athlete or a wanna be, he's the real deal. The best thing about the station is also one of the most annoying aspects of the station. They have plenty of air space for real sports talk (Dan Patrick used to be on during the day and now it's on in the middle of the night) those kind of things don't make a bit of sense to me. Having resided in the area for many years now, clearly KNBR has been a sports radio monopoly in the SF Bay Area. Not to mention that they are very biased towards the San Francisco teams (like the Giants and 49ers) but you rarely ever hear any of the hosts or update anchors mention anything even good about the Oakland Raiders or A's. As one of the previous reviewers pointed out, Lee Hammer could arguably be considered one of the worst program directors in the history of sports talk radio. For instance, he moves Dan Patrick from the 12-3pm slot (which would be standard for many affiliates) to 10pm-Mid, which makes absolutely no sense since the show normally airs live from 6-9am PT. More recently, he brought back J.T. The Brick and other overnight Fox Sports Radio programs (which I personally do not care to listen to and think they are mediocre). Now there are rumors that Lee Hammer could bring back Larry Krueger for the upcoming 49er halftime and post-game shows (remember he was fired in 2005 for derogatory remarks directed towards the Giants)!? What!? Clearly that's an outrage. And why does Lee Hammer think it is necessary to replay Giants and 49ers games around Midnight? Couldn't he utilize the radio airtime in a much better manner? For those of you who enjoy ESPN Radio and its nationally syndicated programming, well, you might have to look at another distant station because KNBR does not air as many shows as those other stations. In fact, KNBR 680 and KNBR 1050 are the largest ESPN Radio affiliates not to be owned-and-operated stations. So until the SF Bay Area can finally get a full-time ESPN Radio owned-and-operated station or at least a station that isn't so biased towards certain teams in the region, you should probably boycott listening to and/or supporting KNBR. read more

Awesome broadcasters for Giants Games, but they need an entire new morning show ( Murph and Mac minus their songs, are like the Golden Girls talking about sports, it doesn't work, but most people are too sleepy to noitce the dead air.) I have listened to KNBR since the Frank and Mike days so I am obviously well outside their preferred demographic. Up until now, when I was in my car, I had KNBR on 95% of the time. No more. I think their current lineup is the worst ever. I didn't think it was possible to screw up Tom Tolbert's show no matter who they put with him but I was wrong. 3 people on the show is ridiculous and takes away from Tom. Rod and Larry don't fit at all and are actually annoying to me ,which wasn't that obvious in their prior slots. Papa and Lund are okay but nothing special and I think Lund was better with Tom. I just recently got hooked into listening to sports talk radio. And I myself hate listening to the music stations cause they play the same crap all the time. Instead KNBR keeps me updated and entertained all the way to work (Murph and Mac) and all the way back home (Razor and Mr. T). Love the weekly warriors interviews from Don Nelson and other warriors players. Also, hearing up on our 49er legends such as Young, Craig and Lott from time to time is great. Keep up the good work! I wish they could give away some Warriors tickets from time to time that would be awesome! read more

Needless to say, sports talk used to be fairly neutral and a good escape driving down the road. But the Tony Bruno segment from 10-10:30 A.M. on Gary Radnich's show is usually pretty funny. It is a pretty male station...they appeal to that demo and it seems like murph and mac always have cheerleaders on their show. Having listened avidly to sports radio stations in major markets around the country, there's no way to ignore the fact that KNBR 680 is one of the most biased stations around when it comes to being non-critical of their local teams. (Unless its the Raiders or the A's, which most of the hosts seem to derive an obscene amount of glee from trashing regularly.) But seeing as they're all we've got around here, and the fact that I need to listen to sports radio all day long in the car, I will up the rating to three stars. 6-9 The Murph and Mac Show (AM 680): These guys are simply un-listenable on any level whatsoever. As someone else posted here, this is a glorified college radio show at best with hardly any entertaining moments whatsoever. Any interview these two do with a local sports star or team executive consists of little more than fawning and butt-kissing. I know it's a morning show and they're supposed to keep it light, but their format provides little to no laughs to counteract their stagnant interviews. D "The Herd" with Colin Cowherd (AM 1050): As much as I despise the right-wing Libertarian belief structure he forcibly interjects into nearly everything he does, at least some of his takes are interesting even if I don't always agree with them. C 9-12 Gary Radnich (AM 680): I know a lot of people can't stand him, but I admire Gary and frequently find him funny and his takes interesting and spot on. I especially approve of when he subtly humiliates Dan Dibley and deflates his ill-conceived arguments. Actually, I'd go so far as to call Dibley the most annoying presence on KNBR period. The guy drives me insane sometimes with his whiny voice and stupid attempts to be funny and irreverent. However Dibs' annoying-ness is counteracted by Mike Kohler's awesome collection of drops, and especially the hysterical 11 o'clock Bruno and Gary segment. I'm in stitches whenever I happen to catch these two legends in action. B+ The Jim Rome Show (AM 1050): Pretty good alternative to switch to during the commercial breaks on Gary's show. Definitely funnier and less mean-spirited than Cowherd. Also has an awesome collection of drops and he gets me laughing quite a bit. Biggest drawback is that sports almost seems like a secondary concern on his show sometimes. B- 12-3 The Fitz & Brooks Show (AM 680): Oh my God, please, somebody cancel these homers before my ears explode. Absolutely the worst, most biased "sports reporting" I have ever heard in on the radio. The only humor comes from these clowns trying to come up with excuse after excuse to defend their pathetic Warriors (Fitz) and Niners (Brooks)-- teams they conveniently work for! Perhaps both of these guys are unfamiliar with the concept of "objectivity" as it relates to the media, because they're about as fair and balanced as Michael Savage. Don't believe me? Just listen to Fitz turn from Giggles McGee into a boorish a-hole the minute some caller sneaks through and dares to criticize his Dubs. In short, a pathetic excuse for a sports call-in show. F Damon Bruce (AM 1550): Thank Lee Hammer for finally realizing that some sports fans might actually enjoy hearing the truth about their local franchises instead of the company line that seemingly every other show on 680 kowtows to. Damon's not afraid to tell it like it is, and as such he's the breath of fresh air Bay Area sports fans have been desperately holding out hope for. My sincere wish is that now that he's got the 12-4 slot he will trounce the ratings of those company shills across the dial soundly, thereby establishing a precedent for truth and honesty in our local sports media. A 3-6 The Razor and Mr. T (AM 680 & 1050): Not sure why so many bag on Ralph; surely he's the most experienced and professional host on the station (tied with Gary perhaps). I find him to be pretty even-handed-- or in the case of his friendship with Nelly, he can at least admit that he's not impartial -- as opposed to that boob from the earlier shift that also just happens to call all the Warriors games. In a lot of ways Ralph is the smartest on-air personality on the station and has some of the best takes. And Tom Tolbert is just fun to listen to, period; his honesty and experience make for a good time listening whenever he's on the mic. B Haven't heard F.P.'s evening show yet, so I'll withhold rating him for the time being. One general gripe about both KNBRs is that they seem to run an exorbitant amount of commercial advertisements, even compared to other AM stations. As of today they have just taken to sponsoring their 30-second traffic segments. It's really getting ridiculous. Also, this may be hard for Lee Hammer to believe but some people in the Bay Area really do root for the Raiders and A's. The disparity in the coverage they get compared to their SF counterparts is insulting. read more

These sister stations own a monopoly in the bay area sports talk market, so we're basically stuck with them. I really hope the Oakland A's end up buying KTRB 860 so bay area listeners will have another sports option to turn to. These stations don't even attempt to display any sort of impartiality on their airwaves. If you want to hear anything regarding the A's or Raiders you should look elsewhere because those are dirty words on the KNBR stations. I know KNBR is the flagship station for the 49ers and the Giants (I think they even own part of the Giants), but they would just rather ignore half of the bay area sports market than discuss anything from the East Bay. That being said, the only show I really enjoy listening to on either of these stations is Damon Bruce from Noon-4:00pm. I love his sense of humor and he seems like the only guy who's not afraid to be critical of the 49ers, Giants, or Warriors. I only get to listen to him occasionally because I really only listen to the radio consistently during my morning and afternoon commute. The mornings feature the Murph and Mac show which is TERRIBLE. These clowns spend more time talking about particles and 60's rock than actual sports. I swear these guys get stoned each and every morning before they go on the air. I don't want to hear about pop culture or music when I tune into a sports talk station. I want to hear about sports! The evening drive features the Razor and Mr T. I actually enjoy listening to Tolbert, but Ralph completely ruins the show for me. Ralph's voice is completely annoying and he doesn't bring anything of real value to the show. I wish Tolbert did the show by himself because he actually knows a lot about sports outside of basketball. He's also good at interviews when they have guests on the show. I'm a big fan of the A's and Raiders, so KNBR doesn't really do it for me. I just wish a station that markets itself as bay area sports talk actually covered more than just half of the bay area sports teams. read more

When it comes to sports talk radio in the Bay Area, this is pretty much the only option. I used to listen every once in a while, but since my iPod got stolen, I've kept it dialed in most of the time during the days. Here's my take on the shows: Morning Show: Brian Murphy is a knowledgeable (albeit dull) guy, but Paul McCaffrey just makes the show unlistenable. He's an idiot that makes terrible spoof songs and knows only about 1980's 49ers trivia. I would rather see P-Conn or Dan Dibley co-hosting. Gary Radnich: I went from hating the guy to loving him in the span of a couple years. He's ridiculous and his show isn't the place to talk "hardcore sports," but his lighthearted approach to sports is refreshing. The Tony Bruno segment is great, and the chemistry with Dibley, P-Conn and Hoeller is what make the show worth it. Fitz & Brooks: I like the guys, but they can be a bit of a bore sometimes when they get too far onto tangents about stuff I don't care about: especially college sports or golf. Fitz is definitely a know-it-all and Brooks plays the role of the "cool guy." I really hate when they have on their "professional prognosticator" though. They give this dickhole 20 minutes of airtime to push his gambling business. WTF. Ralph & Tom: Tom is the best. Ralph is absolutely horrendous. I look forward to the days when "Ralph is on vacation." In interviews, Ralph goes into 3 minute diatribes that are somehow supposed to be questions often heard the interviewee say, "so, what was the question?" Tom is hilarious. He knows a ton about sports, and his takes on pop culture and classic wrestling are hilarious. I wish the could pair him up with someone better than the buzzkill that is Ralph and his god-awful radio voice. FP: Well, he's good with Giants stuff, but his knowledge of other sports is pretty minimal. I don't think he'll be very interesting outside of baseball season. He can seem a little snarky towards callers and his ADD thing can get a little annoying. Damon: I like Damon. Kind of bummed he's not in the night spot anymore cause I almost never hear the show during the day. I like the "hardcore sports" angle and his bits are pretty entertaining. Seriously needs to get a few new drops though. All in all, it's an entertaining station to have on whilst driving around the bay. Sometimes I switch to AM 740 for more traffic, but hell, like Gary always says, "I just want to be entertained." read more

My 68th review is dedicated to the ubiquitous KNBR 68 Being a rabid sports fan, I listen to KNBR all day long. I catch segments while getting ready for work, on the way to work, at lunch, on the way home, after the Warriors games etc. 5am-9am Murph and Mac : Brian Murphy is an all-around nice guy and he knows enough about sports to make it interesting. Paulie Mac is another story. Now, if you want to know what the setlist was at the New Years Grateful Dead show at Winterland in 1977, then Paulie is YOUR Man. His song parodies can be equally delightful and sleep inducing. 9am-12pm Gary Radnich - The Tony Bruno segment is the only good part of this show. Gary's"hip old white guy" act is played out and is embarassing now. Gary used to make fun of people who used sound effects on their show . Funny, now Gary drops stupid repetitive soundbites every 45 seconds "You gots to Get Down" . Yeah, Gary...We.Get.It.Already. 12pm-3pm Fitz and Brooks - Bob Fitzgerald talks great NBA hoops and general sports. He's like "Wikipedia" sometimes...but also, he's the arrogant type of guy that will proudly proclaim " I told you so" but when he's wrong, is likely to make some excuses and bring up Notre Dame's graduation rates. Rod Brooks is probably my favorite single KNBR host. He's humble, funny, and can talk all kinds of sports, not just the big three. 3pm-7pm The Razor and Mr. T - Tom Tolbert is an absolute maniac on all College Sports. He has just as good a handle on NCAA hoops and football as anyone out there. Overall, Tom's personality lends itself well to any format, any guest, or any co-host. Truly a special talent. Ralph B. - venerable, has been around and seen it all. He still talks ALOT during interviews, and tends to name-drop when he is in trouble or losing an argument. Thinks he is "cool by association" since Tom is his co-host. Overall, this is my favorite show on KNBR since it combines interviews, great comraderie, and pre-game shows. 7pm-10pm SportsPhone 68 with Damon Bruce - Damon's from the Midwest is just now getting the Bay Area's nuances and fan history. He can be creative, informative, and has alot to say that is not just kiss-ass. But what blew it for me, is when he kept ranting one day about the Warriors free-throw troubles and kept saying " Can't they make a 10 foot shot with no one gaurding them". KNBR has been a seamless stream of incredible radio/entertainment personalities loaded with character, knowledge, humor, and creative schtick!? SO what is the viable purpose of the addition of this.. Kate 'Lame" Scott ? Oh I see....you're fulfilling some combo of demographic are you? Fine....So now It's TIME for an upgrade then.... NO? Can't do it huh? Can't find a female that adds substance and doesn't put the crickets to sleep? Well...OK Lee ... just allow let me do your job here.....!? Dear Kate...This is your termination notice as of today. Below are the reasons we feel it necessary to part ways with you! *Your vocal intonation is annoying and your delivery is lax and falls short of KNBRs' brand of dynamic delivery!? *Your mumbling and disruptive inputs clearly interrupts the hosts on an ongoing basis...adding no real entertaining or informative value...when you choose to speak? *We found your delivery to be exceedingly bland and your comments or criticisms come across too obvious as 'cut and paste' knowledge and frankly you are outright just uninteresting? I love sports and KNBR is an excellent sportstalk station. When I was a kid I used to listen to Pete Franklin, the King of KNBR. He was the best. What I love about KNBR680 is that they produce their own shows (except late night and weekends when they carry ESPN shows). If you are looking for nationally syndicated shows you should check out their sister station KNBR1050 - there you will find among others Tony Bruno, Jim Rome and J.T. the Brick (who used to have a show on KNBR680). All of KNBR680's shows are good, some are excellent. Currently my favorite show is Sportsphone680 with Damon Bruce which runs 7p-10p or directly following a Giants game. The man is pretty damn funny and knows his stuff and it's kind of cool that he was an intern at KNBR several years ago and is now back hosting his own show. I also enjoy Gary Radnich - he never takes himself or the sports world too seriously and his hip-hop knowledge is unexpected and impressive given he has kids who have graduated from college! The Morning Show with Murph and Mac is fun and topical. Mac is quite good at writing parody songs about current sports events. You can catch the Giants games on KNBR and their broadcast team is amazing. I could listen John Miller reminisce about baseball for hours. The rest of team - Mike Krukow, Duane Kuiper, Lon Simmons. Greg Pappa and Dave Fleming - are stellar. In particular Dave Fleming is a fabulous addition to the broadcast team. read more

Give me a break Cumulus! The only thing KNBR is "the leader" in is "Ad play time." I used to be a fan but just turn on FM to The Game! Way too much. The only reason to tune in for is for Giants games (Kruk, Kuip, Miller & Flem). The personalities are getting tired as well... Murph & Mac: Easily the most annoying show on the radio. Murph at least can provide a few good pointers here and there, Paulie has an incredible knowledge of music, sports talk is rough at best. If you have to listen, tune in around 7:43 for Kruk & Kuip! But be careful to not catch any of their show or the 10 minutes of commercials before and after their segment! Not sure why Kate Scott is not involved in the talk anymore, these guys desperately need something else to help. Gary & Larry: Gary is a tired act but is entertaining at least. Honestly, I wish this show was Gary & Kate Scott. Larry is obnoxious and i just straight up do not enjoy listening to him. Fitz & Brooks: I used to hate this segment, but it has flipped on me because of my strong dissatisfaction with Murph and Mac. Typically, I enjoy tuning in to hear these guys talk basketball. Fitz is well connected and resourced and Brooks has some great perspective on the game as well. Mr. T (and Ray Ratto): Holy crap has Cumulus POUNDED on the commercial play here. It's no secret that Tolbert is their top dog, but the insane amount of advertising going on here has ruined that for me. I have to say I can no longer enjoy this segment, tune in to The Game on FM until this gets corrected. Ratto is rough but anything is better than a solo Tolbert. "The business of baseball" segment is pretty good is my only moderately positive note here. KNBR has really taken a dive at the expense of their listeners to increase their advertising revenues (like any company should to a certain extent). I recommend tuning to The Game on FM, The Bleacher Report on XM, or iHeartRadio and find another source. If you get the MLB At Bat app you can just tune into Giants games without risk getting pounded with an absurd number of Ads because the game must continue to the next inning. Give me a break Cumulus! It's all we got, unfortunately, but it ain't great. I have to keep reminding myself there are 2 baseball teams in the city that apparently are attracting more interest (i.e. air time) than the football (Since they're in the toilet) much less the up but mostly down Warriors. The radio guys are largely poor, however...With the exception, IMHO, of the Razor and Mr. T. Rod Brooks...Guy and his overamped 'radio voice' is hard to take...Whether it's his condescending manner or outright homer antics for bay area athletes he seems to know personally, he rarely comes off interesting...Nevermind the hard to accept misogyny...And, yeah, I think it's a bit played to keep reminding everyone about your snowboard antics...No one cares....His partner in crime, Fitz is much easier to take....Shame about Rick Barry despite his overblown ego, he had great insight into the game of basketball. Gary Radnich...Terrible...Just terrible...His tag line of 'Good knowledge' is a tired one and he simply talks over everyone...It's not really talk radio when all you're doing is talking yourself...He comes off as a brood and generally sounds as if he's talking down to the listener...Nevermind his penchant for talking about anything but sports for a great deal of the time...No idea what anyone sees in this guy. Tom Tolbert, aka Mr.T...Who knew an average NBA player could become a pretty good radio host?...He's good and makes a good partnership with Ralph Barbieri, aka Razor....Probably the one guy I enjoy listening to on KNBR...Credit to him for being one of the only KNBR guys who actually comes off open minded Ralph Barbieri...Used to enjoy him more but the guy has more issues than a comic book series when it comes to axes to grind with Bay Area teams and their players/management....We know this, of course, because we're constantly reminded of this...That and his much talked about love affair with the San Jose Sharks...I don't find him very even, tends to not be very open minded, particularly with callers. Sports talk radio is interesting because people get immersed in it, get all worked up about things that don't actually affect them, like who should be the Forty Niner quarterback. Radio is just more intimate than TV and people listen to it while doing other things, often for long periods of time and usually by themselves. Listeners have a relationship with the hosts, positive or not. It is like a partner who is either beloved or simply annoying. My first recollection of listening to KNBR was back in the days of Pete Franklin, an old ex-marine who yelled at stupid callers and reminded people of how he could kill people with his bare hands. There was one named Ferrel (sp) who was edgy and constantly had a beer pouring sound track going on. I certainly remember Ralph Barbieri, a guy who was called The Razor for his somewhat strident arguments, a smart guy and the closest to Howard Cosell in some ways. He was on the air forever and suddenly fired. He had a lot of fans and a lot of detractors. Hosts come and go in this business. Some are missed and you wonder why they were fired, and others were just experiments. You never know who is going to really grab an audience and stay for a long time. Currently, I tend to listen to Gary Radnich, who famously likes to talk about things other than sports. I find him entertaining and smart, but many others want just sports on a sports station. Bob Fitzgerald is a very smart guy who really does know about sports on one hand, but is also supremely annoying because of his unnatural attachment to Notre Dame. I do not like the way he debates with listeners, just being a dick even with those with intelligent ideas. I do not begrudge him being a cheerleader for the Warriors. He is their announcer after all! Rod Brooks, Fitz's partner, has his moments when he hosts the show alone. He tends to repeat and go on and on when with Fitz, who then has to step in and turn him off. He is also smart, funny and knows about sports, but needs to redirect. Tom Tolbert is now into middle age, but still has that rock "n roll mentality, laid back and with that sort of slacker approach. Normally, this would be weird, but he pulls it off and is again, like other hosts, a smart guy with a range of ideas. I really like his current partner Ray Ratto, one of my favorites in the sports media. I normally just listen when I am working in my garage and so I can't comment on the night or morning personalities. You hear over and over that KNBR is simply better than the competition in other cities. Here there is a wider view and more rationality , less of a breathless life or death approach. The hosts aren't yelling and screaming, the callers likewise aren't the classic couch drunks who dominate the airwaves in other areas. Some people like that intense all-sports approach, but here in the Bay Area the market supports a more sophisticated approach and I tend to like that most of the time myself. read more

Put it this way, I love the RAZOR. He is the only great interviewer on the station, the rest are average at best, especially Tommy T. Sorry dude, interviewing isn't your bag. Early Drive Show - Who cares? They change names every year. Gary Radnich - Somewhat interesting but his act has gotten tired and old. The only bigger head in San Francisco is Barry Bonds's. Fitz and Brooks - Are you kidding? Yawn City. Have these guys said one insightful thing in all the time they have been together? Just one. That's all I'm asking. Razor and Mr. T - Great when both are there. But Tommy takes off too much time these days. The Razor alone or with Mr. Ted or the other 1,000 fill-in hosts is great. Love the Razor. Damon Bruce - He is very interesting to listen to when I happen to listen, not much. My advice is to swap Damon Bruce to take over for Fitz and Brooks. People will actually stay awake, it may save lives to as people won't drift off to sleep while driving. I miss Pete Franklin. read more

KNBR 680 and 1050 are great stations to listen to if you follow Bay Area Sports from the NFL to Major League Soccer. They also cover top national sports stories if relevant to Bay Area fans. Music radio stations have often been pretty repetitive with playlists. Sports talk radio formats change with the world of sports. The quality of local hosts varies at this station. I feel that a good talk show radio host must be objective and not favor the teams/fans but certainly not berate the teams/fans. Here is my take on them as well as ranking: 1) Damon Bruce: Damon is a very talented sports talk radio host who deserves his own slot during the afternoon from 12-4pm. What makes him great is that he tells it like it is and doesn't concern himself with what others think of him. If he does have constructive criticism of the Giants, 49ers, etc., he lets people know it and it makes sense. He also has great interviews with sports figures outside the Bay Area. His entire show is available daily for podcasts. 2) Razor and Mr. T: Ralph and Tom are also at the top of my list. I listen to these guys more than others on my way home from work. Tom is very knowledgeable about sports especially outside of basketball. He also does a good job taking phone calls from the fans. Ralph tends to go off on his own but he isn't afraid to ask the tough questions during interviews. That is what is needed especially if a team is not doing well because people want to know why their team is not performing. It is also important to note that they keep fans grounded if a team is on a hot streak. They also have good interviews with local columnists including Ray Ratto, Monte Poole, Lowell Cohn, and Tim Kawakami. 3) Gary Radnich: Gary is a longtime name in Bay Area Sports and is the most charismatic out of all on this list. He is very knowledgeable about Bay Area and national sports news. He has great chemistry with his assistants on the show. His 1/2 hour segment with Tony Bruno is always entertaining and the best in sports talk radio anywhere. His interviews are very informative and fun to listen to. 4) Fitz and Brooks: I would listen to these guys on occasion. It is hard to get a good gauge on them because I am at work and don't listen to them as much. Rod has good charisma and has the best voice on the station. They have good interviews that are informative and don't make a listener judgmental either way. 5) FP Santangelo: FP just started doing Sportsphone 680. I haven't listened to him much to get a very good idea about his work. He has good baseball knowledge but tends to be too biased towards the Bay Area. 6) Murph and Mac: Definitely at the bottom of my list and probably everyone else's list. The problem is they always suck up to the fans, local teams, and their teams' executives. Their presentation is pretty bad as well. They both sound and look like a couple of dumb*****. We all know that Paul MacCaffrey can't miss with rock and roll music and Brian Murphy is dead on when it comes to UCLA. They probably get a lot of interviews because listeners want to hear other people talk besides them. Paul can't spell sports. These two need to be replaced. Enough said! As far as game broadcasts, Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper are the best and should be hosting national broadcasts on Fox or ESPN. They are great at calling a game and have extensive knowledge about baseball from the majors to the minors. Many criticize Mike Krukow for being a homer but he gives great insight to the action and applauds the other team when credit is due. read more
